Making an Abrasive Cat Scratching Post
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I make an abrasive cat scratching post out of corrugated cardboard. It can also be a scratching pad if you only use one section. It is layered with sandpaper to file down a cat's claws. Try making your own.
No cats were harmed in the filming of this video; the noises are sound effects.
Camera work by Ami Urbanske.

That’s incredible!
Its not they are too sharp; I think it is that they are just too LONG, and they keep curving to the point the cat gets them tangled in the Berber carpet! I need something abrasive that will wear down the length of the claws without me having to (literally) put on a face shield and welding gauntlets to trim the claws with nail cutters; maybe this will work.
Great design, I want one !!

Thanks! It works well. One of the cats loves it.
Thanks for the video

You're welcome!
Easy if you have tools.
This is good but I was looking for something that could be "refilled"... the cats will tear down the cardboard pretty quickly so you'll have a frame with a few pieces of cardboard in it... ideally some kind of press mechanism (I'm guessing here) can keep the cardboard in place so the cat scratches but can be released to refill with new pieces of cardboard

This one sounds more like what you are looking for. I saw it a few months ago on Reddit. imgur.com/a/6ZSV1jw

Refill it, it’s just as easy to make a new one.
Like the idea. What gauge sandpaper did you use? Coarse or fine?

I believe I used 120 grit.

ha!
Did this wear the nails down so that they're not sharp anymore?

It helps the cat flake off the outside layers of their nail moreso than it files it down. The other cat, who is the one that scratches furniture, prefers the sisal rope scratching posts.
What grit did you use?

I believe I used 180 for this.
What grit#???

I think I used 180, but 220 would also be good.
My only concern is that after a long enough time, the Cat might wear out its claws to the point of it aching, as they get too close to the paw

The cats know when they need to wear the claws down and when they don't. They grow back pretty fast.

Hammurabi, I wondered the same thing. Think I'll put it up occasionally just in case. Oh, the Infection-factor if they did, indeed wear them away too far down! Cats don't only scratch to file their nails down; it's a stress-reliever as well.
