// description
For the past couple of months I've been getting into game dev, so I thought it would be fun to show you the progress I've made. It's basically an open world game made in 2D.
Although the process hasn't been easy, it was actually really fun and I've learned a lot from it - like how to use Unity, programming, pixel art, animation, and much more. Next I want to work on the enemy AI and implement some basic combat mechanics, although it might be a big jump...
As for the video game itself, I don't exactly know the direction of it, but I've had this idea of making an action adventure or survival game since I've been playing that genre for a long time! Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this video and I'll see you in the next devlog! When I actually upload it... someday...

    Hey! I wanted to give a quick update on the idea I've had for the game. I think it's quite apparent how new I am to game development, and as I've been thinking a lot more about the direction of the game, I realized the open world aspect is too ambitious for a first project. I'll explain a lot better what I'll do with the gameplay in the next devlog so the game has a lot more meaning to it! Also, big thanks for the support and kind messages on the video, I really appreciate the feedback :D

    Probably forever ago, but anywhoo. I think if you split your tree into two sprites, one for the leaves and another for the trunk. When you fade the tree you can get more immersion as no need, reason to fade the trunk. Once you have that seperated you can apply a sprite render order, and am SURE you already figured that out.

    Hello! For the trees, have you considered setting the sprite rendering layer dependent on the Y position of the base of the sprite? If the player is on the same layer as the trees, then it should look good! I've used this method for many games I've made before in Unity. Also if you find IEnumerators tricky, you can have a bool represent whether the player is behind the tree or not and then increase/decrease a timer in FixedUpdate(). FixedUpdate() only runs on Time.Deltatime intervals and is very useful for using timers. It might save you some frustration, but it requires more variables. Also the art of this game looks really stunning and I look forward to see where you're going to take the project :3

    A tip or a small optimization: Try storing the value of the sprite rendered in a class variable to avoid GetComponent() on each Trigger enter/exit. Basically initialize your "sprite" variable in the Start method and use that in the rest of the code.

    The character and animations look pretty great my man, for real, the trees aswell. My only critique would be the floor tiles, which are not as great as the other stuff, but good nonetheless. Have you heard of studio miniboss? They have good tutorials for it. By the way, i'm preparing to start an open world 2d game aswell. Gotta stick around to see your progress. In unity, you can fix the sprite sorting problem in tilemap mode by checking chunk mode to "individual" somewhere in the inspector. Also, using trigger enter for the alpha on trees you'll run into performance problems later on for sure. There will be just too much objects with the "update" function with logic in them... You'll need some sort of Level Streaming(game world is saved into chunks and loaded) aswell as a quadtree for log2 search for player instead of OnTriggerEnter, which will *probably* be more efficient :) (i tought it had good performance but collisions are an expensive operation. A game i made for college with lots of actors got close to 1 fps with about 100 actors in scene, and 2000 fps with about 10...)

UE4 has a built-in system for that and it's the thing i used. I found this article ardenfall.com/blog/world-streaming-in-unity teaching it in Unity, but didn't try it.

    You can optimize the fade in/out code if you create a SpriteRenderer variable, just assign it with the getComponent in the start method, and you will be making just one call to the getComponent method instead I don't think it will be so much cheaper in runtime but just saying :D
