    Technical terms for the parts of a crochet hook: tip, throat, shaft (and this is where the measurement of the hook comes from), grip, and handle.

    I don't have a wood lathe but I have almost completed restoring a small, "consumer-level" Atlas lathe that should suffice for this type of thing like crochet hooks or pens. I'd love to make some crochet hooks. Right now I might try to make one without the lathe, by just using a little leg off of something. It's about the right dimensions, haha. I have some boiled linseed oil and some turpentine. I will put some turps in the BLO. Thanks for posting

    Hello Rick -- what are the dimensions of the billets you cut? Did you mention what type of wood you use? Love the video -- thanks for doing

  • @RickMayotte

    @RickMayotte

    Hi Chris, The dimensions of the billet in the video is around 7/8 by 7/8 by 8 inches. You could probably use something as small as 1/2 X 1/2 inch but 7/8 is the thickness of the board that I'm using and it's easier to just turn it down than to resaw the wood. The wood I usually use is cherry but any hardwood will do.

    Would you consider making a full set of hooks? What might you charge? My wife is always crocheting something to give away or donate. Like beanies for service members in the middle east.

    No, not "pierce" the yarn. That is absolutely undesirable - what is wantec is it slides through the fabric without piercing the yarn.

    +Oncycl - I guess that was a poor choice of words on my part. I have a basic understanding of how it's done but my wife is the person who does most of the crocheting here, I just make the hooks. Not to say I've never tried it. My wife showed me how and I did once make myself a hat - after a fashion.
