The making of a wooden crochet hook. The hook is turned from local cherry. In this video I work through the entire process of how I make a crochet hook from start to finish. Please Subscribe!

Technical terms for the parts of a crochet hook: tip, throat, shaft (and this is where the measurement of the hook comes from), grip, and handle.
I don't have a wood lathe but I have almost completed restoring a small, "consumer-level" Atlas lathe that should suffice for this type of thing like crochet hooks or pens. I'd love to make some crochet hooks. Right now I might try to make one without the lathe, by just using a little leg off of something. It's about the right dimensions, haha. I have some boiled linseed oil and some turpentine. I will put some turps in the BLO. Thanks for posting
Your wife is very lucky. I’d love to have a complete set of carved in-line crochet hooks too. Keep up the beautiful work. 🧶

That is beautiful!! What I wouldn't give for a set of those beauties!! You are very talented. I hope you don't mind, I am going to share this on my business page, which is for a mobile app for handcrafters, their markets/outlets etc called Xplore Handcrafted - thank you!!
Very nice job. Have you designed any with thicker handle? It can make for less hand fatigue

Thanks, this is a harbor freight 10 x 18 mini wood lathe. I have a video where I give a review of this lathe. You can find it here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZyOz7FxZ8vIZ7g.html
You are really fast! ;)
Thank you. Plus what kind of wood did you use?

Oh okay lovely work you do. Thank you so much
Hello Rick -- what are the dimensions of the billets you cut? Did you mention what type of wood you use? Love the video -- thanks for doing

Hi Chris, The dimensions of the billet in the video is around 7/8 by 7/8 by 8 inches. You could probably use something as small as 1/2 X 1/2 inch but 7/8 is the thickness of the board that I'm using and it's easier to just turn it down than to resaw the wood. The wood I usually use is cherry but any hardwood will do.

Thank you Rick, Will definitely give this a try
Would you consider making a full set of hooks? What might you charge? My wife is always crocheting something to give away or donate. Like beanies for service members in the middle east.

Is the hook the same for all of the crochet needles ?
@RickMayotte

Yes, they're all made the same way
👌👌🙏
No, not "pierce" the yarn. That is absolutely undesirable - what is wantec is it slides through the fabric without piercing the yarn.

+Oncycl - I guess that was a poor choice of words on my part. I have a basic understanding of how it's done but my wife is the person who does most of the crocheting here, I just make the hooks. Not to say I've never tried it. My wife showed me how and I did once make myself a hat - after a fashion.
