Making a wildwood broom with hickory bark braid
This video shows the making of a wildwood broom out of broomcorn straw. It is tied in with waxed twine and a decorative weave is added using hickory bark strips.

It's very impressive to see the amount of work required to produce an item we take so much for granted today. I love watching the handicraft you put into these. The only disadvantage to watching the videos this early after they're released is that the really informative captions aren't up yet!
You have the knowledge of a much older person. I'm an old man and I remember watching my grandfather make things like this that we take for granted since we can just pop over to the store and buy them. Thank you!!!!!

Every time I say to myself "how interesting can (making a broom) be" I still manage to become instantly transfixed.

Exactly.
I was not expecting this, I thought it was just going to be a regular broom but that's awesome! I've never seen something like that before. Very cool
Cool! In Laramie, Wyoming, you'll find the well-preserved Wyoming Territorial Prison, which includes a broom factory, where the prisoners were employed making brooms. All the old equipment is still in place, but I never saw a demonstration of how it works. Thanks for a great, informative video, Mr. Chickadee!
That's a broom that stands above other brooms. It shouts it was made with skill and appreciation
He makes a broom into art
Brooms today are made so "cheap" compared to how they used to be made traditionally. Great video as always :)

You can still buy a quality corn broom but most people want the dollar store price so they won’t buy a good broom. My corn broom is over 30 years old and may be a little worn down but still works great.
As a child I was often sick and was sent to my grandparents so they could take care of me. One time I got to follow my grandmother when she and her friends made brooms. I was certain they were all witches and bragged about it to my friends when I got back to the city. I'm still disappointed they were just old ladies.
I'm speechless .. i am without speech
The production value of your videos are getting pretty amazing!! Wonderful content.

Glad you think so!
I sure enjoyed watching this
No power tools, no noise, no dust...
With your cat's approval....😻
Wow...I'll never take a broom for granted again. A beautiful and very useful addition to your workshop!
As for me, I think I would have a lot of kindling for the stove and would give up and sweep the floor with a store bought one so I could at least walk around in the place. Dropping my toast would definitely be a no-no. And even the cats wouldn't come visiting through all the mess. Of course that presumes that I could find out how brooms are actually made these days. I paid a healthy $30 for my large straw broom. Now I know it was a bargain. Your ability to find these old skills and learn how to make the new whatever it is is amazing. You continue to find, revive old skill sets that are usable as well as admirable and master them supremely, and that astounds me. Thank you sir.
...and now I've watched someone make a broom...
I really like watching your videos. Mainly because there isn't a lot of talking. Just informative and detailed action.
Excellent work brother!
now thats what i call broom!
Hey Josh, I made a comment on this earlier and it just flashed back and I was checking out to see the comment and it was gone? What's worse is all the inconsiderate people making remarks with no bearing on your had work. You did a fabulous job creating the broom from scratch. Thanks for your teaching how to videos. Stay safe and keep up the good work. OLD DAWG DREAMING Fred.

Mr. Chickadee, as always, did a great job in producing a useful and decorative item. I don't make brooms, but I do cut thousands, (yes, you read that correctly) of broomsticks on my 80-acre forested property. I bundle them by (at least) a ten-count of 6' hardwood sticks and when I have 200+ bundles, (2000+ sticks) I load them up and deliver them, (usually twice a year, Fall and late Winter) to the "Broom Man" in Eugene, OR. I'm one of two suppliers and he sells/ships completed brooms all over the world; so, if you happen to have a hand-made broom from Broom Magic of Eugene, chances are it's from my property in the Willamette Valley. Cheers.
I wish I were even 1 percent as skilled as you...I think you'd really enjoy Clay Hayes's channel. You two are the most accomplished people I know.
Here I’m sitting in my garden, coffee in hand, watching the calmness and craftsmanship of you making a broom. It’s not the greatest endeavor you made, but still it’s impressive how you accomplish it and the result is, as always, very very good. The quietness of you working on your tasks keep drawing me back. Keep m coming!

Very cool! I've seen parts of the process before, but not all together in a video. I was kinda hoping the cat would try to play with it at the end!
I said to myself( that shouldn’t be to hard) then it got complicated. What craftsmanship 😧
I love watching the crafter create their crafts. I enjoyed this very much and what a beautiful broom. Thanks for sharing!
Those are arms that work every day.
a certain type of sorghum is another traditional plant for the bristles. great videography of a beautiful craft, sir.

was there any specific knot to keep the individual bundles tight? i could imagine making little sliding bowlines with a clove to hold it would be nice to really cinch down. oh the irony of using a loose broom and end up sweeping more fallen bristles than dirt.

Beautiful!
Beautiful and functional. I would not have figured that out on my own. Thanks for the video!
I know a couple historical society's that would loose there minds if you made those and put them up for sale .
A broom even Harry Potter could be proud of. Nice work.
You are a true craftsman of many skills I am always learning so much from your videos that it just holds me and I love that there is no music just you doing the task at hand and showing how it is done thank you
Never knew how much work this would be. Really impressed.
I would love to see you work with horn. Your craftsmanship is absolutely incredible!
I'm always pleased to see one of your videos pop up, great craftsmanship as always, an intriguing and fascinating process, producing a beautiful yet practical item.
Such a beautiful brush, some of the Japanese hairbrushes and paintbrushes people make are stunning as well.
Well done. A work of art and traditional crafts manship. I found another video on making brooms like this but trying to find it again. I do appreciate and enjoy watching your crafts and the hard work put into them.
Gorgeous craftsmanship.
Mr Chichadee is a youtube craftsman deity
Such peaceful yet interesting and informative videos.
Thank you.
What a delight! Excellence of craftsmanship in both the construction of the tool and in the video presentation. Also striking is the contrast. I am referring to the difference between so much of what is commercially available and the workmanship in this humble implement. I am distinctly reminded of XiaoXi Culinary Idyll.
Hello from New Brunswick Canada where the provincial bird is... you guessed it!
That is one metal broom, (music, not ore), right down to the tuning section.
Josh, there are no captions, so I would like to ask clarifying questions (I've been drying my broom material all year). 1) What was the knot you started off called? 2) What was the knot you ended the wrapping with called? 3) Do they ever slip/ need to be retied? 4) Why wrap the broomcorn "upside down" to then fold over and make part of the rest of the normally wrapped grass? 5) What kind of knot did you tie in the end with the loop through, and pulled tight? 6) What resources did you use to learn how to tie the broom? Many thanks. LG

@@MrChickadee thanks Josh. I find my clove hitches slip and loosen as the grass rotates in use. No matter how tightly I wind. How do you deal with that?
that is the most beautiful broom I've seen. I've messed around with making my own brooms from grass, they worked alright until the bristles wore away.
Everything you make has a special design to it. Very nice.

Wow great job! You're always fun to watch!
I should make one of these for my ex so she won’t need to drive anymore.
Muy bien hecho si señor excelente trabajo
Hi, your tools are so sharp. I've seen the video when you sharpened your hand plane. When you give time to make another how to video, would you please consider showing us how you sharpen other tools such as drawknives and axe? And that finish recipe that you put on everything from leather to wood. I would love to experiment and give them a go. Thank you.
I am at a loss for words.
Work of art and functional just like everything you make very nice
Great to see a video from you and nice broom build.

Is there anything you cant make? You're awsome!
elegant
At Dollywood they used a paper cutter, one of those big tables with the real large cutting blade in order to put the straight surface on the bottom.
I'm now going to make a new shop broom.
It was towards the end when you started trimming up where the handle and straw meet that I felt like I could smell fall in the air.
I didnthis with whiskey rye a while back. Worked fine.
Epic
Bravosssssss
Any witch would be overjoyed to fly that broom.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Is there ANYTHING that you DON'T know how to make??? lol :D
What a man will not do to get his mother in law home..... 😊
Tried to grow some broom corn to do this last year, drought saw to it that I only got 3 stalks worth keeping. Made for a small cobweb duster I suppose.
