Making a Wide Band Ring with a Cabochon: A Silversmithing Tutorial

This tutorial shows how to make a simple bold wide band ring with a bezel set cabochon. The stone is a 10x12 mm rectangular black onyx, although this design works well for other shapes too. This is an intermediate level project. For materials, I used 18 (1.02 mm) gauge sterling sheet, and 3/16 inch (4.76 mm) fine silver bezel strip in 26 gauge (.41 mm). As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux.

I like that ring Chad!! And, I see you really like your Pepe Tools rolling mill. Nice pattern on the ring and as said previously the onyx looks really good with the silver. Thanks for another great instructional video.

I may try the Fiskars next, I’ve been using Joyce Chen kitchen scissors but after 10 years they are starting to get dull. I am not the worlds best with my handsaw - probably because I was shown how to use a heavy duty scroll saw that cuts up to 3mm- that however is goal for after December.

Oxo used to make a really great pair of shears (model was called off-ramp) that they sadly discontinued. Those were my all time faves!

Love that! Totally the kind of thing I would wear and I’m a woman. Can I ask how you stop solder joins showing on textured or reticulated rings? I am making a wide reticulated band but the solder join shows. I would melt some silver dust over it but it would probably alter the existing reticulation which I I am happy with so don’t want to ‘profanity intermission’ up. Also if the stone drops down in the corners is it best to reduce the height of the bezel at the corners?

Thanks Just me! That’s challenging. Some people use various things like water based white out or some other substance to stop the solder from flowing to places they don’t want it to go. As far as the corners go what you suggested will work. I had to do that on the sweater bracelet piece I did a while back: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dZxsqamzqr3QpcY.htmlsi=aBVyWFu2t0bPfvRI Thanks for the nice comment:)
