I recently tried this same experiment based on a Instagram video I saw. Same result. As it turns out for the videos where you do see the battery cause a whirlpool, the content creators use a drill to spin the water and then put the battery in the whirlpool; they just play the footage in reverse and it appears to the audience that the battery caused it. I'm fairly certain that the real reaction creates trace amounts of chlorine gas so be careful doing this kind of an experiment on a larger scale.
