    Oh my goodness! Great idea on using some stiff fabric as the base! I was hesitant to make one after watching another video mentioning that they use a rubbery base that you can find like at a hardware store. I can't believe I didn't think of using some sturdier fabric instead 😅 Will definitely give this one a go. I mean, it really is a plus that it's washable

    Hi Sue, I make the holes as small as possible to only just allow the strips through so it hasn't been a problem. I have washed mine many times now and it has only lost one or two strips. I guess you could knot the strips on both sides of the hole but if you do, use longer strips. I wonder if dogs might chew on the knots but I don't know. Good luck!

    Hi Jimi. For some reason I can't find your comment on KZread, only on my laptop. I find 1.5" works well because the fabric folds and rolls and a longer length gives a better snuffling experince and ensures the base is covered up. The choice is yours! I guess you could make them narrower but longer and that might have the same effect. Good luck!

    @@meganyoung5464 Hi. Liver cake is usually really popular with dogs and cats because it's smelly and tasty. Good for them too as long as you don't give them too much! It's very high in Vitamin A and can cause diarrhoea if you feed a lot of it so tiny pieces are best. I make my own. I can't paste my recipe here for some reason. • @helenatton-FIDODogTraining

    @helenatton-FIDODogTraining

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi. If I understand what you mean by furry plush fleece, I suspect you will find that it frays a lot and the pup will tear off mouthfuls of fur. Felt or fleece is often used for the rags because it's thick, soft and needs no hemming. Craft shops often sell bags of felt offcuts that are ideal. Hope you find something suitable and colourful!

    Hi. Any fabric without a weave, like canvas or something with a coating, like the plastic coated cloth you can buy for table covering. Anything that doesn't fray when you cut it really. I made mine from blackout curtain lining, which has a rubber backing.

    Hi Kristin, Canvas would probably work OK, as long as it doesn't fray. I've washed mine many times and the only time I've lost strips is when one of the dogs pulled one out! Make sure the holes are not too big. I used a skewer to push some of the ends through. Someone else suggested knotting the strips on both sides of the holes. It would be a pain but very secure.

    A great idea for entertaining the dog inside, but....why not just feed your dog on the grass under the mat? Nature’s snuffle mat! We always scatter kibble on the lawn when it’s dry to encourage sniffing and to slow eating, but I will make one for when it’s too wet to feed outside, thanks.

    Hi. Thanks for your comment. Grass is great for scattering treats. Even when I do enrichment activities outside I will scatter a few around in the grass as well as offering toys. Some people don't have easy access to a lawn unfortunately and at least their dogs can still enjoy foraging in a similar way. Using a snufffle mat also means they can have the same fun inside when the weather is really bad, as you say, or you can't take them out for some other reason.
