    It was really helpful, as a real witch I want to make my own wand and I was actually wondering how to put "a core" in it. I dont' have any fancy tools, just my knife and sand paper. And I'm still researching magical properties of different types of wood, coz I want to make a real magick wand (the closer one is a wiccan wand). Also, what is that machine/tool you used on the last wand?

  • @TheEveryMaker

    That's great! I tried a few different ways of making wand and using the spokeshave was my favorite. They are pretty inexpensive at around $20. The last to i used was a lathe, used for turning round things (wand, table legs, pens, handles, etc). Though slightly more expensive you can get a small table top one like I have for around $200 on sale. A ton of fun and makes quick work of clean perfectly round wands. Whatever way you choose, I hope you have fun and make the wand that suits your needs!

    You need to get yourself a good whittling knife! I think that would have made the initial chiselling bit easier. Also, with regard to putting your core in, it might have been easy to drill into the wand from the handle (just where the handle curves around the corner. Then plugged the hole. I made my wand on a lathe, as per your last suggestion, I made it some years ago. I need to put a core into it sometime, maybe my black cat will donate some hair! :)

    Thank you! Nox is a great dog! As for the whittling knife, I've been meaning to make one for some time now, it would have made this project a ton easier! I thought about drilling a hole for the core, but decided to try and sneak it in without any visible spot. When it comes to the piece I turned on the lathe, the walnut grain was so curvy, that would have been the only way I could have done it. Thanks for watching!

    Well, it turned out lovely! I admit, I was surprised at just using one hair, but then I remembered that JKR had never given a QUANTITY of how much 'core' there is. For example, with the 'hair' ones, just how much Veela hair is in there? (I *seem* to remember something saying that Fleur's grandmother had given up 'a hair' for her wand, but I'd have to go look it up to make sure). I love HP names for critters, our dog is 'Oliver James Wulfric Remus Black *surname* the Bear'. I bet you can guess where all of those come from. Oh, except 'the bear' that's more a description than a name...

    I would recommend drilling from the bottom of the handle upward. And avoid using glues and unnatural stains. Personally.

  • @TheEveryMaker

    @TheEveryMaker

    Жыл бұрын

    I was trying to avoid plugs and things of that sort, using the natural cracks in the wood. If you were to drill a hole, how would you plug it up without the use of glue? I typically doing use stain, I like the natural color of the wood, but in this case, I liked how the stain gave it a bit of an aged look.

    Did you oven dry the wood to prevent any parasite or mould issues? I'm looking at making one for my wife and I would rather use wood with some natural character than hardware store dowel.

  • @TheEveryMaker

    @TheEveryMaker

    Жыл бұрын

    All of the wood I used was dry, though I have seen a lot of people doing carving with wet wood as it tends to be easier. As long as the tree is healthy and the wood you recovered hasn't been sitting on the forest floor for a while, I don't see any issues as long as there are no signs of being buggy. Though you can always dry it slowly in the oven afterwards, though it can cause warping and cracking.
