Making a Vintage Inspired

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
In an attempt to feel more comfortable in my own clothes, I am trying to find my style in making my own pieces. So far, this seems to be a cross between a vintage and cottagecore aesthetic haha. I don't find I do vintage in the same way I do historical costume, I don't go and look for fashion plates, etc, I just try to capture a vintage-y feeling in my clothes.
This skirt is very simple to make (if you excuse the ramblings and indecisiveness). It consists of a rectangular waistband, and three cut panels, one on the fold, all gathered at the waist, and a button placket front. This is a pretty straightforward project when you've got the steps set out, and hopefully I've been able to explain how you can draft your own skirt too! I had 2 meters of fabric for this, and I used nearly all of it, since I had to recut the waistband. I tried to make it beginner friendly, but I have a tendency to needlessly overcomplicate things. But please ask me any questions and I'll try to help out! This turned out really cute and comfy :)

    AND...apparently Texas has voted against summer, as well. Part of me wants to complain because of the rain: a little over 7" From Wed.-Thurs. I'm pretty sure it's all the rain keeping temps low. I appreciate the lower temps. ...but I feel like I'm about to grow webbed feet!

    I love the new waistband. A much more flattering shape on you. I wanted to share that I cut out and sewed together a six panel gored skirt and it came out lovely until I put it on and realized I used the five gored skirt pattern piece so ... it is waaaay to big. So rather than unpick the seams and resew it I decided I would just put a lot of gathering in, and call it a style choice. Lol!!

    You just reminded me that I have two pieces of greyish green cotton I feel is too dark/sad for a dress, but is perfect for a skirt. I'll figure out what to do with the part that was intended for the top part of the dress, hummm maybe a mini skirt who knows!

    i think the first waistband might be wonky because the front and back are separate pieces???? the way i learned to do them you take the pattern from the front and back and then you join the two in a single pattern piece and straighten up the place where the front and back are joined, that way your final pattern is only one piece.

Haven’t done it yet tho😬 Anyway, if you want my advice about the placket and waistband here ya go. Iron everything first. Never too much ironing!! Lol😅 and there’s some really great videos out there with super clear instructions. I watched videos about it until it made sense. Love it! I too, have heard of issues with fusible interfacing. My solution was to start using scraps of linen and heavy cotton that I have left over from past projects. I baste to the fashion fabric and then sew as usual. Most of the time I can keep my basting within seam allowances and then I don't even have to remove it after.

    I have a question, because I value your opinion. What color would a female Bilbo Baggins walkabout skirt be, in lightweight worsted wool (with the red silk brocade vest & brass buttons (cause there is no way I can afford gold)). 1 Tan "Virginia cloth"(most likely for a gentleman of leisure). 2 Chestnut Brown (my favorite). 3 Chocolate Brown (safe). 4 Dark Olive. 5 Duck Green (green is always nice) . 6 Dark Saxon Dlue(interesting). 7 Or something odd like a Chestnut, Gold & Red "Houndstooth" Check (could be fun). My coloring and body type is almost the same as yours, and we have similar taste in clothing. I just don't have curly hair and wear square rimed glasses. I really wouldn't be surprised if we are related you look an awful lot like my grandmother when she was young. And we are of a heavy Scottish descent.

    I've been avoiding doing a button or zipper skirt because I have no idea how to measure my waist. My "natural" waist (the narrowest part of me) is around my bottom ribs and anything I could make that actually wants to sit there is going to be uncomfortable as heck so I usually do elastic or tied drawstring waistbands so I can get it to stay where I want it, which is about two inches lower in the very small gap between my bottom rib and the top of my hip (about an inch of space etween the bones, so I also dislike wide waistbands). Also I'm clueless about plackets :) Does nobody else have this issue with fitted waistbands? Or am I just more oddly proportioned than I thought? With pants, they generally slide down to just above my hips, which is a difficult measurement to measure because I have a thick short torso and don't have much hip so just 1" bigger in pants size and I can slide them over my hips without undoing the button. My best guess is to measure the waistband of pants that fit without falling off but I'm not sure how to translate that into the curved waistband. I don't see needing to mock up the whole skirt but I probably will have to mock up a waistband. I also feel like the points on the original waistband would be cute in the back and front rather than at the sides, but I have no idea how to make that work with a placket :)

  • @planningtolive_thebestlife453

    @planningtolive_thebestlife453

    The point in the front would be fine with a placket. I would make a normal placket and then place the waistband point in the proper position and hand sew it down. Not sure if it would work by machine but only cuz I don’t use machines😬 Sorry if that doesn’t make sense. It was hard to put into words what I was picturing in my head.

  • @planningtolive_thebestlife453

    @planningtolive_thebestlife453

    Oh and to make the waistband fit you I’d just add a bit of elastic to the back anyway. It would just give it enough grip I think but you could still do buttons or zipper in the front.
