Making A Vacuum Sealing Adapter For 2 Liter Soda Bottles

This is hands down the cheapest way to store dry foods long term! Using a 2 liter soda bottle and your vacuum sealer, you can store a wide range of foods, such as rice, beans, sugar, salt, pastas and small cereals. This video shows how to make the adapter that fits over the 2 liter bottle's neck - very simple to do!

Wow I never though about using 2. 2.5, and 3 litter bottles. This would save me lots. Plus now I see many other things. 1) You can make new caps with valves. 2) You can mark the bottles both ways. A problem I have with rice is measuring it out. I always have too much or not enough. And its not fun getting it back into the bag. This way with a valve you can get just the right amount. And if you do get too much. Just pour it back in. Then you can re vacuum it. Next time I go to the city. Ill be getting the new caps with valves ( pvc pipeing) and a manual break breeder.

Oh I forgot to mention a rubber hose that fits over the valve and has a small hole for vacuum hose to connect to. When you vacuum. You shut the valve before you remove the vacuum. How much vacuum you may ask? Well when the pump reads 15 psi.

I am having trouble finding a bag sealer with a hose attachment that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Can you recommend one that's economical? Thanks! Walmart has the cheapest food savers with the accessory port. Yes on the brake bleeder. I did not know the 3 liter bottle caps were larger, so it's hard to say what to use. You might try a plunger from a kid's dart, drill a small hole in the center and you'd have to stand there with it pressed onto the cap. Good luck!

The hose that comes with the foodsaver has a nipple on it that would normally fit into a vacuum sealing cap or other accessory. When you drill a hole in the turkey baster cap, that's the same size as the nipple, so the nipple slips into the hole you just drilled. Please let me know what other info you might need, and please be specific as to what's in doubt. Thanks!

It sure made an impression on my mind, the instructions are scratched down to act asa reminder to pick up some valves to try it later. I have a vacuum ceiling unit, with all the attachments, but it doesn’t work during a power outage. And sometimes when you’re out hiking or camping, and a person wants to be able to seal something back up again, it’s a great way to be able to do it. Roll up a "hot hands" handwarmer and drop it in the bottle of rice during the fill process.Screw on the cap. You will then have a vacume and no oxygen. No pump no baster no drill no tape no hassle.

  • @jdprepper5463

Oxygen absorbers do not vacuum seal a container. Yes, they remove the oxygen in the air, thus reducing the volume slightly, but not enough to pull a vacuum on the jar / bottle. Also, a "hot hands" warmer is quite big, and would be very difficult to force through a 2 liter bottle neck. I use the 100 CC Oxygen absorbers (find them on ebay) and it's tough to fold them in 1/2 to get into the bottle.

Great idea. Why do you believe this prolongs the shelf life of the rice? Plastic contamination?

  • @jdprepper5463

    @jdprepper5463

    7 ай бұрын

Rice, pasta and other dry foods will oxidize over time, which means they go stale. Removing the oxygen by vacuum sealing them in a container lessens that effect greatly. The plastic would only contaminate the food if there were moisture in the bottle which causes the plastic to leach chemicals over a long period of time. The enemy here is oxygen, so removing the air removes the oxygen.

My father just vacuum-seals plastic bottles by squeezing the bottle as he what’s the cover back on. No special equipment. Sir, the way you have that tape put on there, you could retain the strength of the original vacuum on that bottle by pushing on the side of the turkey baster bulb before you disconnect the vacuum sealer from the bottle, to push the tape over the hole while the full strength of The vacuum still is in place. That way, you can seal the hole without compromising any of the vacuum. Then When you remove the apparatus, you would lose nothing. Super nice idea. Sort of wish I thought of it. Lol

Diane Vitale: i’m hearing a lot of that from some people, but you have to understand that since our governments are telling us to expect a food shortage and even famine that’s going to last for multiple years, it’s a good idea to actually check before making assumptions. I understand that’s what you’re doing right now. That’s a smart thing you’re doing. The way you normally go about checking such things is to go to websites of manufacturers and even governments that talk about the limitations of different plastics, and how they break down, what the risk factors are. Some plastics do leach out into liquids. It’s really important to know about that. But we’re not talking about liquids now. And the little lightweight, minimalist water bottles that are meant to break down rapidly in landfills may not be a good choice for food or water storage either. If you think you want to use a bottle, and it smells or looks less than optimal, then you have a very good reason not to use that bottle. Very good indeed. Some people don’t have much money, and they are still gonna need food. This is a smart way to make sure there is food available in your storage, even in winter. The way you store the bottles will have a big impact on how the bottles hold up. They should be at a cool and stable temperature, in a dry location, and away from light. Responsible preppers are supposed to check their food storage regularly, rotating it. This is to make sure that the containers are in good shape, that nothing is trying to break into the food supply, like a rodent, and that they are undamaged. If there’s signs of compromise, then that food should be checked and re-packaged. This is true of even glass containers. At the first sign of moisture damage on a can, it needs to be addressed. Optimally, we would all have 7ml Mylar and freeze-dried foods in #10 cans; but if it comes down to the choice between having food stored in plastic versus no food, from my perspective there’s a clear and easy choice here.

Just wondering if that would hold the seal very well. Once a soda is opened, no matter how tight the lid is the soda will go flat due to air seeping in.

Just a thought, put a 50 cc oxygen absorber in and just put the cap on.

That does not vacuum seal the bottle. It will remove oxygen and slightly remove some volume to the air, but not as much as vacuum sealing, which maintains freshness much longer.

You don't need to do that with your race all you do. Is you fill it rake to the top and it seals itself? So yeah you don't need to vacuum seal or anything. Make sure it's rated as far as you can go up and give it a date and it's all you'll see do it. That way that's how I do my rice

Oxygen in the air causes food to spoil. Some foods go rancid, others stale, and still others will discolor and wilt. When you use a vacuum sealer, it removes the air, and the oxygen in the air, from contacting the food and causing spoilage. A vacuum does not naturally occur just by closing up a container, the air has to be removed. If your goal is short term storage of say 6 months, your way will work OK. But if you want truly long term storage, doing it this way will guarantee your food will last and not become nasty over time.
