Turns out that old Samsung Q1 Ultra tablet is capable of running Mac OS X. So today we're going to go through the most convoluted way to play the OS X version of Halo on this thing. Oh... and probably mess around with the touchscreen a bit :P

The resolution can be fixed easily; it's a common issue when Hackintoshing these machines with weird displays that OS X doesn't properly read the display's EDID. You can fix this by dumping the EDID in Windows, then manually injecting it in OS X. This is what I had to do to get the display to work properly under OS X on my Sony Vaio UX UMPCs.

good to know I'll keep this in mind whenever I rebuild the UX180P EFI to where it's based on OpenCore instead of Chameleon I already got the EFI built currently working on the config plist in theory I should have a post updated in the hackintosh fb page soon about the project only road block I've came across so far is USB mapping due to USB Tool Box not being supported in windows 7 pro X86 luckily the hackintosh discord has guided me into a alternative solution that might work

9:56 it is so bizarre that it says Copyright 1999 yet just below are older logos of Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter and KZread. Surely some graphic designers updated the label and they must have noticed the year there and asked their managers, which makes me wonder if the copyright protection really ran out and they hoped nobody would notice it.
MJD is the mad scientist of retro computing and I'm here for it.

i love these videos. Watching you use forgotten tech and play around wit it is so cool
I didn't imagine you were going to do this, but it was something we all needed lmao. I can't even hackintosh my 2021 lenovo laptop because of hardware and seeing you do it on the samsung thingy is insane (and also disappointing for my laptop. literally disproves "newer is better"). I think you should try doing videos on Microsoft/Nokia Lumia and Windows Phone (and maybe a video on LumiaWOA? That's Windows on Arm). Plus, you could show off WUT which is a third party app store for Windows Phone devices (basically theres actually apps now - not as many as iOS or Android but still very usable). Thanks for the content! I hope you see this comment :) Have an awesome day Michael!

Just as a side note: you can run macOS on just about anything - in a virtual machine. You need a hacked version of VMware or mess with advanced settings of either VirtualBox or QEMU, there is no video acceleration and in some cases no sound either - but there's no messing with custom bootloaders, kexts or DSDTs, either. It mostly just works.
This would have scratched every itch I had for a super portable touchscreen Hackintosh back in the day. Unfortunately I was stuck on my old Compaq laptop and Dell desktop. Super cool!
Thank you for these absolutely FANTASTIC videos! I can't wait to dive into this one! ❤
It wouldn't be an mjd video without the "but everything goes wrong," that's the trademark/tradition
Rather than checking the printed copyright year, the best way to identify a disc at glance is looking at the matrix text on the center rings of the inner side. There's a database called redump showing info of different video game disc pressings, including version numbers and any other particular content they may have (as long as submitters take the time to check)
the tony chacheres with the 1999 colyright is crazy
6:17 That jingle when there are jump cuts with title cards in these videos always cracks me up like nothing else!
I was expecting a video title saying "Making a Touchscreen Hackintosh... But Everything Goes Wrong"
I've always been holding out for Apple to actually introduce some sort of native touchscreen support for their desktop OS, I got pretty hyped when they announced their own silicon that would be used between their Mac and iPad lineup. Hoped it would be the starting point for a merge between macOS and iOS, like full desktop OS running on the iPad because same architect but nah. Still separated and still no quality desktop touchscreen support. It's pretty dumb because a ton of folks use Macs for photo editing with external drawing pads, hell they even use iPads with the Apple Pen lmao.
Good work getting OS X installed. I'd love to see you keep trying to get that screen res working and find a way to calibrate the touch screen. I bet that for basic tasks it could still be a usable and useful little pocket Mac.
I am a simple man: I see a MJD Video and know, it will be full of errors, entertainment, and most obscure tec, I could imagine. And this is why I love Michael MJD. This is content, that you can watch on today’s KZread, that is actually high quality. Keep it going!
Crazy how you managed to play Halo CE on this thing! Cool stuff, as always
Most of the reason that I watch your channel is due to the fact that for many years I spent a considerable amount of time installing OS/2 just because it had the only good version of mahjong to be found for any operating system.
Have you tried Android-x86 on it yet? Would be cool to see an operating system that was designed for old touchscreen devices like this

Glad I could help!
I have 2 different q1's... thanks for finally giving me an idea of what to do with one of em in 2024
Michael Your videos are inspiring and entertaining
The screen resolution is an easy fix with Hackintoshes - there's a boot flag that forces a resolution (that can be added to the com.apple.boot.plist file to make it apply on every boot). Let's assume that you want to force 1080p at 32 bit colour, the boot flag would be: "Graphics Mode"="1920x1080x32" I used to have to do this all the time on almost every Hackintosh install, regardless of having correct graphics drivers and/or distribution used.
Friend:Wanna play? Me: nah. Friend: why not? Me: mjd just posted so l have to watch him because hes awesome!
technically this is the second touchscreen Mac on this channel?

Just bought one on eBay a few days ago on a whim. I have to try this too.
we really like it
Whoa, I think I had iDeneb on my old Dell laptop. Neat.
Exactly what I needed! A video on a Windows UMPC from 2006! 😅
Finally we got Halo running on a weird hackintosh!
Compooter only using 85% of the screen real estate to save power 😂😂😂 Energy Star
That's not a stupid idea xD
This man's dedication to wanting to play Halo CE is impressive! I mean, it is a great game!
Have you tried connecting a keyboard and pressing alt while you are on the display settings? It should show more resolutions
I have a Touchscreen HP Elite X2 G1 as my Hackintosh running Monterrey, I also have a Dell Mini 9 with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (32-bit) running on Atom
Most people would ask why you'd turn an underpowered janky tablet from 2009 into a hackintosh. Micheal is one of the people who asks "why not?" instead.
Remembering when my athlon 64 4800+ / nVidia 84xxgt ran the Windows Portal port @
The touch screen calibration issue feels like it was made for a different screen aspect ratio. There is only error in the X axis and it's almost perfect near the center of the screen while skews to the left near the left edge and to the right near the right edge.
Cool!
is there a file or something on macos that allows you to force it into a resolution? 🤔
Seeing "Microsoft Game Studios" made my realise I need to play Freelancer again
From all of the old Mac videos and the one where most goes well, is not even about an actual Apple product, lmao!
How did you make bootable ideneb? I tried Rufus to make bootable usb drive but it doesn't allow.
Try XRANDR to set a custom resolution. There might be a terminal command to add your own and activate it. You can make an SH script to have it auto set on each boot. I have done this on Linux, and it seems to be the same in MacOS.
@yjk_ch

Xrandr is for X windowing system, and Macs use Apple’s custom windowing system instead of X.
The portable pcs are coming back like Lenovo legion go, Rog ally and steam deck
finally a way to play halo!!!
Just so you know, you should always turn VSync off! VSync forces your framerate to be a multiple of your screen refresh rate. So if your screen is 60Hz, but you're only getting 59FPS, VSync will drop you to 30FPS as that's the next multiple of 60. That 30 FPS setting in halo just emulates having a 30Hz screen. It has a huge impact on input delay as well. Never leave VSync on when doing any performance testing, all it does is eliminate screen tearing. I'll bet the game is much more playable with it off, even if it's still not good.
@Mas0nAnimations

For some reason my pc used to play a game at 50 fps unless i turned off vsync and then sometimes it just works again on 60 fps on vsync
Reminds me i should get a new LCD for my Samsung Q1
You can also eject the optical disk by holding the F12 key... At least, that's how I did back in the day on my Pentium 4 Hackintosh...
you know it's bad when mjd swears (censored)
I was wondering what I could install on my HP Pavillion circa 2008 touch laptop, subject for my first video ever maybe? 🤭
Nice
You should have a BD-R-Drive!
snow leopard has rosetta. you have to manually install it
You have to test resolutions in SwitchRes no? Authorize them is that works
I like this video
1:27 thats my tablet when i play the strongest battlegrounds
the funny thing is that install works on amd cpus aka the phenom 2s which are code named deneb
Why is FAT an option for the file system of this drive in Disk Utility?
Hi Michael can you make a demo on how to use Cortana after 2023?
With how much technology has advanced since 20 years ago, you’d think that whole windows 8 ecosystem Microsoft tried in 2012 would work. I’d love a windows version of what apple and android is doing personally, since the ui and fast metro stuff is pretty useful for big screens and those with disabilities. Mobile devices have really gotten stale lately and I think Microsoft was on to something with their phones, but the technology and business models got in the way. It was been years since I have seen phones with contrast that good, I swear. Metro UI used to be awesome and felt alive, just look at the Xbox 360 dashboard and old windows phones. The problem now is that these companies need to have some restraint and understand that once people buy their products, then it doesn’t belong to them anymore. So they don’t have to control what you already own like an angry kid who doesn’t want to share his Oreos. You got my money, Apple or whoever else. If you don’t like me using your devices, and in ways you don’t intend, don’t sell them. Simple as that. I don’t care about what a company wants me to do, I’ll never know these people and I don’t care about their opinions. I don’t buy opinions, I buy technology I find useful. Crappy opinions come free whether you like it or not here in the comments section all the time. So I don’t need to buy those. I wouldn’t put that past KZread though. Seems like they’ll sell any part of their website like a cheap escort these days. Anyways, cool hackintosh. I like seeing little pieces of old tech like this. Everything used to be so shiny. I miss it.
Michael, the reason you have that illegal instruction error is all Intel Macs supported SSE3 while the Intel A110 in your Samsung Q1 does not support SSE3 and only supports SSE2
You can make a video on Windows Vista Origami on the Samsung Q1 Ultra! Because Windows Vista Origami was meant for such UMPCs😅
We need a modern version of this. Any ideas.
I had 2 of these in 2013
I have one of these collecting dust for over a decade (bought used in 2011, not even taken out of its box since a few months later), and I wonder how could you use this underpowered thing for anything more useful than as an overengineered digital photo frame. Suggestions welcome.
Cool
