Making a Swimbait Part 2, making the lure mold

I designed and made this swimbait in part 1 now its time to make a lure mold. But not just any lure mold, this one will have slots and pins to hold the hinges and to form the hinge pin holes. It's a bit more work upfront but it will save tons of time when I start producing these swimbaits.

    Yes...the puppy and I survived the gag, the wife thought I spilled a cup of yogurt! That's only the second time I have forgotten to put the Vaseline on the mold before pouring the second half. The last time it was a simple lip-less crank so I was able to treat it as a one part mold and just cut it partially in half. This mold had too many critical parts so it was a fire drill to scoop out all the half-set silicon and hustling to wipe it all out and cleaning off all the parts and details. There was no guaranty that it was going to work...so I was nervous opening it. Any one out there have a different system to avoid the issue?

    My method is to always put the jar of Vaseline on top of my mold until I pour the silicon that way I don’t miss it.

    Awesome! Here in Brazil the popular nickname for Francisco (which is a saint's name, but you should already aware of it since the pope chose it too) is Chico, if you never knew about it Thanks for sharing this, I'm really impressed on how you can calculate the volume so perfectly!

    Can you discuss any the basic differences in design from making a three part lure as to a two part lure?

  • @EngineeredAngler

    @EngineeredAngler

    2 жыл бұрын

    The design only changes in weight and balance. You have a bit more options on how you balance the lure.

    Great video once again! Definitely the best on you tube. I wonder if the hinge is as strong as the screw eye method? I built a lure like this with 5 joints out of a plastic material from hardware store. I forget the name but is white 3/4" thick with a wood grain on one side used for finishing around doors and windows. Takes a lot of weight to sink it. I caught a small pike on my 3rd cast then accidentally engaged the reel mid flight of the 4th cast and it sunk to the bottom after snapping the line. It felt worse than loosing a big fish! Lol. Would like to get into the hole molding process and love all the hard work and detail you put into each video. Thank you from Ontario Canada.

    Thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience. I did the exact same thing with a swimbait that just the day before I had caught my PB bass on. I put a giant magnet in a landing net and dragged it on the bottom for a long while...I got my lure back!

    It's my go to for the molds because I can put it on the silicon only and not get it on the lure body. The mold release spray can create a texture.

    Good 2 part video. How do you secure the pins, did I miss that. Why make them so long?

  • @EngineeredAngler

    @EngineeredAngler

    4 жыл бұрын

    The long pins you seen in the mold don't become part of the final lure. They're just there to hold the hinge plates in place so I can cast the lure around the hinge plates. The hinge pins are only about 3/4 inch long and are installed after the paint and first clear coat goes on and before the final clear coat. Thank you for watching.

  • @EngineeredAngler

    Could you 3D print the mold out of sla??

  • @EngineeredAngler

    @EngineeredAngler

    4 жыл бұрын

    You can 3d print molds but, the huge benefit to using a flexible material is that you can deform the mold to allow parts to be de-molded. Otherwise only the simplest of shapes could be molded, if you use a rigid material for the mold that is. The other benefit to silicon is that nearly nothing will stick to it so your parts come out easily.
