It wouldn't have been at boiling point that quickly, but if you throw something of either extreme heat into cold or vise versa, it's gonna react and expel. It's like when you add frozen fries into the oil too fast. the cold water causes the hot oil to pop and expel

So to answer common questions that I'm getting: I went home and filmed getting the spike out then I showed how the spike fared. Once the weather cleared up I drove back out (to some random field in town not to promontory) and pounded it in. Then I chopped it out once again and filmed how the spike fared the second time. Apologies for making it unnecessarily confusing. The weight of the spike after driving twice was 588 grams. Given the uncertainty in the scale it could be and probably is much less than a gram. Also most of the loss was from the 2nd time in the random field so please dont go trying to pan out the dirt at promontory.

You could conceal it even better by lowering the purity to 14k or 10k, but you would need more spikes. You could also make an alloy with copper, giving it a rose color. I feel like the best way to conceal gold is to make wire with it. Not only will it be hidden, but it makes a great conductor, so you can use it around the house for things like you’re speakers.

Gold is an amazing metal, it's so workable. I've seen gold and silver scepters jewlry and other ceremonial artifacts over 6000 years old being displayed in the IMJ. The detailed workmanship made me emotional, thinking some person worked on it so long ago.

Damn, that POV hammer-shot around 13:30, with the ting-ting-ting of the strikes, was extremely satisfying. Kudos on the successful spiking!

I liked how at 15:30 the audio compression made a kind of side chain effect where the banging of the hammer made the atmospheric sound dip in and out of the mix. Makes me think of applications of that technique in music.

I agree he needed a block of wood under that pry bar as a better fulcrum and he might have a chance at pulling it out.

@@Sk8rdad420 Wonder bars/flat bars are too flexible. You lose most of your prying force in flexing the bar itself. A genuine purpose built crowbar would've done much better.

I think Cody’s Lab is one of the most genuine channels on KZread. You can really tell how much he appreciates science and chemistry.

@@ffnovice7 I used to work catering weddings that would cost $20,000 for the venue rent alone, but the normal people don't have _near_, that much money on hand. Just because some people can drop that much money doesn't mean it isn't a lot for normal folks.

Love the stuff Cody, really really do. Always enjoy them! I've been here for years and you've always been well-entertaining and informative.

I seem to recall you trying to cast a gold railroad spike a long time ago. As i remember it you were trying a plaster mould which collapsed under the weight of the gold. So now we see the finale :) yaayyy :) i love how you show the trial and error as well as the success. Keep up the good work Cody. :)

How many times have I done that with a prybar.... Too many. I doubt I will ever learn though. Thank you for the laugh, I saw the setup and thought "here we go". Glad I'm not the only one :)
