On the exhaust, use a 4x10 metal floor vent, the rectangle shape will fit like a glove over the exhaust port. And a flexible metal pipe is good. Add a trickle charger to keep the battery up. On the NG or propane add a quick disconnect and one more hole for the flex line.

this looks like a great alternative to the $12K + options for a whole home generator. I picked up that same generator earlier this years from Costco on sale , I will look into doing that mod soon.

I did mine without the exhaust pipe, the fan pulls all the exhaust out with no issues, no need for the exhaust pipe. I ran mine for 8 days after IDA, with no issues, only stopped to change oil. Used a downward facing input vent so no water could get in. the fan is louvered too. Ran my whole house except central AC, Oven, Hot Tub. Used 240 RV plug tapped into my inside box 30 amp breaker. Shut inside box off outside. Kept cool with window units.

In addition to many of the other useful comments here consider adding 2 exhaust tubes one inside the other to be used as a heat shield diffuser , the outside tube to be much cooler to keep you, kids and pets from getting burned. There are a few types of fire and heat resistant insulation materials out there to use on the inside of the cabinet for more sound control. Building a second or add on box made out of fire resistant plywood, connected to the plastic enclosure via the exhaust tubes, used only for exhaust gas baffle chamber, lined with fire resistant insulation. A couple of baffles in this chamber will greatly reduce exhaust noise. If built correctly, the engine exhaust back pressure will not be affected. Painting the inside of the entire generator enclosure with EMF resistant paint, and copper tape for all gaps for EMF protection will only work if one hundred percent of the Gen. enclosure is covered. There are companies making copper thread impregnated sheet materials for this in addition to the paint. Only practical when the Gen. is not in use, but better than nothing. One last thing, if you also baffle the cooling intake/fan, and the sound level will go down even further. Great video and comments, thanks for sharing 👍👍

Perfect enhancement on what I plan to do. My generator will live in a shed about 250 ft back that has no power. Most of the time it'll run my power tools. That'll also keep it running enough that I can spot problems. When it gets too cold I'll drag it back to the shed which I'll pretty much copy from you. Thanks for saving me a lot of time!

On my Firman triple fuel generator, I run on NG. I retrofitted my old Generac box to add the ability to lock it up plus the box already has the vents for air. I ordered an exhaust adapter with flex tubing off Ebay to remove the heat and flumes ($35 off Ebay). Every two weeks I run it for twenty minutes when finished, I disconnect the black battery cable (no need to trinkle change). I check the battery ($15 off Temu combo charger/trinkle charger) before starting up and it's always fully charged. I might add, I refit the NG line to plug gas line from generator to NG line) (Home Depot $35) and add a 50 Amp connection box to my breaker panel installing an interlock. (Interlock was $15- and 50-Amp box and 50 Amp 15-foot cord $85 both items off eBay). I use You Tube to find out how to do things. Hope this may help someone.

A few constructive comments: 1. use a flex for the exhaust pipe. That solid pipe will continue to rattle around and even wear against the grating on the engine. 2. If you want to make it a little quieter, you can buy foam mats that stick onto the entire inside of the enclosure. 3. If running in the rain, you will pull rainwater into the intake with all that air flow. If you added a downward scoop on the intake and discharge, that would keep the rain out, and also help reduce some of the sound. 4. You installed a 50A 120V (3 wire) inlet, but you are showing a 200A 120/240V panel. How did you wire a 50A 120V 3 wire (hot, neutral, ground) into your 4 wire ( 2 hots, neutral ground) 200A panel? 5. Cut you exhaust pipe on a 45 degree angle facing down, to keep water out.

Instead of 45 down from the exhaust, I’d suggest an upward angle and then use either a vent cover or a hood like on a smoker to keep rain water out. A downward angle I don’t think would encourage the proper airflow

I liked your project; you are thinking through all the steps. I have the same generator. It is a noisy beast so I built a "Quiet Box" with rockwool insulation plus an automotive galv. flex exhaust pipe to take the exhaust 20' outside. You are correct that the generator will over heat in an enclosure; especially here on the Gulf coast. I added a 550 CFM 8" axial blower (already owned or >$200) routed to optimumally cool the engine/generator area and then ducted to the outside. It is barely enough volume because the outlet air was 130-140'F (depending on generator load) with 86'F inlet air. Add another 10-15'F for summer. The enclosure dropped the noise in the garage from 89 dB to 76dB; which is OK since the blower alone is 74dB.

It is a neat looking job. If this were me I would be very concerned about fire. It is sitting next to a wood fence and vinyl siding both of which are flammable. Since you are not concerned about noise focus on heat. I would monitor inside temperatures both for generator life and secondly for fire risk. Consider purchasing a remote thermometer. There are many options but in my case I chose a sensor push thermometer. It has a high temp alarm setting. In addition I installed a bi-metallic temperature shutoff switch normally open into the low oil shutdown circuit. In my case I bought one rated at 55C. There are two excellent videos on KZread to set this up. That way if you are in your house and the cooling fan stops you are protected. Secondly I am not sure if your insurance company would be happy with this installation. It is better to find out if you are protected before rather than after a fire. They might suggest lining the compartment with a non flammable mineral fiber or some other material, or who knows they might be fine with the way it is now Better safe than sorry, and if they are unhappy consider relocating it further away from the house.

But the air in grill poor @13:31 . Put bug screen over air inside to keep out bugs. The air in need to be 2 vertical 4" pipes up with caps to kill more sound. As the big grill is where most sound is going out.

If you want to keep it quiet, in addition to adding internal dampening, place any holes to the outside, down lower, then add an external box, with dampening pads, that makes the sound turn 90 degrees and then another 90 degrees so that it exits the same direction as it started, just lower...like the light in a periscope. Sound does not like to turn corners, particularly with dampening.

Some things to consider. The exhaust fan would be absolutely necessary for closed operation. I would put a sail switch to prove it was running and connect an audible alarm in case it failed. If the motor on the fan stopped from mechanical failure or debris such as tree leaves or a plastic bag were to block the fresh air inlet the temperature rise inside would be fast and dramatic. The fuel in the onboard tank would reach its boiling point and now you have a bomb next to your house. If its like my Champion dual fuel the power switch does not remove the ignition, the engine is stopped me removing the fuel source. So an over temperature switch would be ineffective in shutting the engine off.

I would suggest thin pavers to line the inside floor. Since this will knock your exhaust way out of alignment you might look for some type of heat insulated sheathing instead. I suspect your floor will melt (and maybe catch fire) because of the heat coming from the bottom. If you run a generator on grass you will notice how the heat turns the grass brown.

I’m hooking it to the natural gas line with a flexible hose. This thing burns 16 gallons a day and in case of a hurricane, there’s no way to store and have in hand so much fuel. Plus everyone is going to run to fill their car tank so fuel will be hard to find in an emergency.

I will have to figure that out. Since I live in a residential area wish I had a large lot I will have to get a cover like yours. I don't think people will mine when the power goes off lol... but they might ask for power hahaha. Did you install the interlock on your power panel or did you have someone install It for you? Keep up the great work plan on getting mine hopefully this week.

@@froger3582 these generator engines don't have oil filters. They just recirculate oil from the sump that collects at the bottom. As the engine wears it leaves metal shavings from piston rings and cylinder walls to fall into the sump with no way to prevent them from getting recirculated. This is the biggest factor in engine life for these small engines. Would would be surprised how big the metal shavings are especially during break-in.

The separate exhaust port is unnecessary with such a high-volume fan. I built a similar box out of ply and my fan isn't nearly as efficient but as yours but it's still enough for an 8K generator. I lined mine with insulation to knock some of the noise down and it works really well

If you haven't run a full load test yet, you should just to see if heat radiation will affect the back wall and floor. When idle, it can run all day with little heat, but under a full load, the muffler turns into a cherry bomb, plus the heat from the coils triples. The fan will help a lot, but may not be able to keep the heat radiating off the muffler from melting the back wall. I have a similar setup, but no shed mods, my genny is a tight fit in the shed and have to remove a wheel for it to fit and sits against walls, and the exhaust comes out the side with the outlets on the back. I have to swing the unit out 90* to plug in and pull it out to clear the doors. Had to use it for 2 days last week after storms, and the heat blasting out the back through the coils was 110*+ so raised the lid to vent it. As others mentioned, a lot of heat comes out the bottom and dried the ground under it in just a couple hours. Two things to note, your solar panel, make sure it has overcharge protection, I destroyed a Deep Cycle using one that didn't, second, make a sign and stick it where you will see it near the start switch, Connect power before starting. Don't start it and then plug in, especially if everything is wet outside, you could become part of the circuit. I do have plans to insulate the shed so I could run it inside, just have to figure out how to route the exhaust if I flip the unit around to reach the power panel and controls. The one you have makes it very easy.

@@memejmoon9716 secure it with a lock and chain to one of the corners of the shed if they are embedded in cement or look for a place to chain it to near your home. If the she isn’t near your home dig a 2x2 foot hole nest to the generator and pour in cement with a Gromit embedded in the cement before it dries. Once the cement is dry you can use a lock and chain to secure it. If you have a garage however a 1500 is small enough to move pretty easily and you can store it in the garage until you need it and not worry about securing it until you use it and then just chain it to the shed.

Great video. learned something each time I watch similar videos on same subject. I just bought the same generator at Costco. Your hook up from the generator to the outlet on the house is nice and clean. Is there any chance you can share the hook up on the circuit panel and did you use an intetlock devise and if so, what brand? If not, did you use manual transfer switch. Sorry for all the questions, but all aspects of the alternative power replacement is important. I appreciate your method of video with the speed up part of the video so we don't have to watch in real life time the mundane cut of the hole or drilling. No offense to you or others. Your method allows watchers to get to the point quicker. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for taking the time to share your project and listing the items used and where to buy them. Also, comments from others, such as the remote temp devise is unique and possible. A portable fire extinguisher would be handy and a smoke/fire alert with carbon monoxide might be helpful, especially for the house insurance policy. I installed a fire hydrant outside and fire hoses inside my house when I built it 10 years ago out in the country. It lowered my insurance rates, especially since we have a volunteer fire dept. I will be glad to share with others. THANK YOU AGAIN.
