Making a Shake Pen from Stainless Steel - Handmade Ballpoint Pen With Shake Mechanism
Ғылым және технология
Last year I stumbled across a so called shake mechanism for ballpoint pens. I found that little thing rather interesting and by the end of last year I started to built my own version of a „Shake Pen“.
I really didn‘t expected this project to be so challenging and take me a few months and so many tries. A lot of trial and error and dozens of testpieces were made to find the right dimensions, materials, techniques and order of operations to finally get both a working Shake Pen and a product with pleasantly finish.
Despite it‘s simple appearance, a lot of different techniques were used to built the pen including basic turning and milling, deep-hole-drilling, sheet metal bending, electro etching. Especially etching the little symbol to the pens clip was a long journey to get to a satisfying result in the end as it was the first time I experimented with this really cool technique. It's definitely not the last time I used it.
I really hope you enjoy this built even if it is a little bit different as the usual content here on the channel.
If you have questions or suggestions, write in the comments. I will read them all and try to reply.

Very nice project! I MUST make one for my wife to take to work on those rare occasions when she has to actually go to the office. Everyone will be jealous! I am retired but she is still working for now. I was going to make a bolt action type or screw cap type pen or MAYBE a push button type, but now I have ordered a couple of shake mechanisms and I am waiting on them to ship here from Germany. So I am committed. If you ever do a followup video it would be nice to have more dimensions, drill depths, etc and the length of your ball point cartridge. You did a lot of work developing your design and some of your viewers would probably like to skip all of the trial and error parts, and start with actual dimensions that you have proven will work. Thanks for making this video. I enjoyed watching it and I will enjoy trying to duplicate your design and match your excellent build quality. Thumb up from me!

Very nice! I who write practically nothing in manuscript anymore, it would almost make me want to have one, for the beauty of the object.
Very nice. I have never seen anyone make a clip like this. I have never thought of making a pen because I did not see how I could make a good clip. Can you provide a bit morning formation on the steel you used? I see you annealed it before bending, have you considered hardening it after you were finished forming it? Thank you for a great video. Informative, well edited, a joy to watch.
@WeCanDoThatBetter

Thanks for your comment and feedback! I really do appreciate that. The steel I used for the clip was from a roll of 0,5mm feeler gage. Unfortunately there is no indication which sort of steel this is exactly. It only says "springsteel". The roll is 5m 0,5m thick 12,xxmm wide feeler gage springsteel. I thought about hardening the clip after bending but as the clip felt springy enough and I was lazy, I didn't harden it again. But I will try with an other clip to harden it again after bending. I assume that would be better.
Wiedereinmal ein kleines Meisterwerk mit sehr guter Dokumentation!

Thanks for your kind feedback!
My shake mechanisms just arrived today from Germany. For the benefit of us Americans who do not use metric, what size drill and tap for the threads to install the shake mechanism? I don't want to have to re-thread the mechanism to fit what I have in the shop and I don't want to have to buy a whole set of metric taps and dies and stuff. Thanks! Also what type of ballpoint refill are you using? I have tried a lot of different ones and none go into the mechanism the way yours does in the video. I really want to make this but I don't have a lot of information to work with. Thanks again for posting this excellent video.
@WeCanDoThatBetter

Hi, the thread on the shake mechanism is a weird M7,5x0,5mm one. Meaning 7,5mm outer diameter and 0,5mm pitch. It is hard to find taps with this specs. The guy where you baught the shake mechanism also sells taps that size. The refill this thing uses are called D1. This should be a standard and refills from different companies should fit when they are called D1. Good luck for your project!
@growleym504

@@WeCanDoThatBetter Thanks for the reply. I did manage to figure it out, and found a tap on Amazon and it is inbound, arriving tomorrow I think, along with a 7mm 8" long drill. I have other long drills for the main hole and the hole through the tip for the ball point. I just ordered the D1 refills and should have them by Sunday. I should be able to get this done without too much trouble now. Oh I almost forgot, I don't have suitable stock for the clip. I could use a 0.02" feeler gauge I guess. have some 304 Stainless, .022" thick or about 0.55mm thick coming any day now, and maybe I will try that for a clip. Think that will work? I would rather not use "spring steel", which is usually 1095, a carbon steel that could rust. If I blue it then the etching won't show very well. It is a good thing I was able to figure out the tap size, and that also you have told me. No set of metric taps will have that one. It seems to be used a lot in making pens for some reason. My lathe feed screw is in inches and pitched 16 tpi so the .5mm metric thread pitch I can only approximate closely by changing the gears, not match precisely. Probably good enough but I don't like trying to make taps that fine, anyway. Again, thanks for the reply. Hopefully the info you have shared will help others to do this project without a lot of trial and error, too.

Very impressive ! One question, did you re heat treat the spring on the double bend so to make it 'spring' again? Or it could just bend again when being put into a thick material jacket pocket. I hate it when a pen clip bends out and won't spring back again lol
@WeCanDoThatBetter
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I didn't heat treat the clip after bending. But the more people ask, the more I think I should have heat treated it again :) I will definitely try this on another clip to make it really springy again.
