I am Scottish and have a real skean dhu from my grandfather that passed away a few years ago. The coolest part about it is the gem on the end. The issue with this one is that it's not bent to allow the fit in a boot. I wish I was able to show you mine and see if you could make a demascus copy. I also see you build alot of hammers and wish you could build me a mosaic demascus sheet metal hammer with the leather disk handles. Love your videos and if I'm ever in Montana I want to visit your shop!

I am really enjoying your work with Mike Boyd, but I have one suggestion if possible. Can you do an extended version of these? The reason being is that all of the parts that you have fast forwarded are the parts where you are tutoring Mike and/or giving tips. I think these parts would be most advantageous to a lot of people who are not only beginners but veterans as well. I like watching your vids for the obvious entertainment value but also for the tips and tricks that I can pick up as a newb in the blacksmithing world. I think if the KZread thing ever fizzles out you have a promising career as an instructor as well as a blacksmith of course. Keep up the great work!

I too am starting to miss when it had more of an instructional feel. I understand adjustment, but I'm here to see smithing more so than flashy videography. The 30 seconds spent in the kitchen could have showed the steps in between laddered billet to almost completely forged knife. I can't understand why your viewers would disagree, but many very well may. I have the same problem with forged in fire. They skip so much of the actual process in order to make room for content aimed at people that aren't actually interested in the black smithing. In short, less yack yack, more whack whack! 🙂

Potential project idea: Similar to making a leaf, you could make some Broad-head archery tips. The challenge would be to either make them threaded for use on modern arrows with screw in inserts or to make them for more traditional archery shafts with either a tapered tang or a socket to fit to wooden arrows.

Nice video, Mike and Alec. You talked about "DIRK" what about the SGIAN ACHLAIS (also known as "the sicklecholch"), which the Scots have worn under the armpit until the 17th century, as a tool and eating utensil, but also as a secret weapon, which has been carried quickly and quickly little longer than the Sgian dubh. The Skean achlais is a further variant of this body worn small daggers. I hope you make the handle of the dagger black, because that is tradition. Because 'Sgian Dugh' The name is Gaelic and means "black dagger", which is not sure what black is referring to. It is true that most handles of the Sgian dubhs were indeed black, but it could have come from the wider meaning of black, namely hidden or hidden.

Hi, which steels exactly are you using and which would you recommend for a kitchen knives? Is this combination in the video any rust free? It doesn't have to be a stainless, with little care and protection it should work, but I don't want the knife to be rusted just when I put it in the watter. btw nice knife :-)

What I've learned from watching Alec and Mike work together: If you asked Alec to speak Scots and give a high five at the same time, he'd likely have an aneurysm.

I find myself wondering how long each piece is kept in the forge or set out to normalize. Is there any way you could start putting times for these things? I know that's just more work but I've been curious about it.

Just wondering what kind of pattern you would get if you reforged you milling shavings. Most likely (I'm thinking) a kinda junk bar. But still think it would be interesting if it is even possible that is.

You should look at making a Dirk as well as a Sgian-Dubh both would be worn with traditional Scottish dress, although the Dirk was more used more for less formal occasions.
