Making a Ring Box Out of Cocobolo
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This little box is made from a very nice piece of cocobolo I've had for a few years. The dimensions are roughly 4" x 1.8" x .875". The hinge is a 10mm barrel hinge that can open a full 180 degrees. I used a simple paste wax for the finish and buffed it out to a satin sheen. This is a great project if you want to work on drilling precise holes; I probably could've done the hole thing on the CNC router, but where's the fun in that?
Feel free to refer to the CAD layout in the video if you want to recreate a similar box! Thanks for watching!

By far the coolest build I've seen for one these boxes. Simple but elegant, with alot of cool touches . Saved the video....maybe one day
A crayon is definitely my go to precision woodworking marking tool.

That trick for eliminating snipe is so obvious but so genius! I've never thought of it and I haven't seen it anywhere else Great project, amazing work !

I seriously never considered that to eliminate snipe in a planer! I can't wait to try it.

Thanks Collin! I usually don't use that trick because I can afford to have a few extra inches of material to cut off. But with this wood was to expensive for that. Thanks for your comment!
HHAHA this guy's commantary is on point! "Here is me pretending to hold a peice of lumber", "you could use paint or a crayon" and the entire time he sounds high af. VERY entertaining.
Hope she loves the box!!
Amazing work man!! Never thought a simple ring holder could look so good.

Cool video, thanks for sharing! Any pointers on where to get tiny little latch magnets like that?
@parillaworks
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Grant. I think I got them on amazon a while back. They're 1/8" x 1/8" neodymium magnets. Came in a 100 pack.
Very nice ring box. When I first saw the pic, I thought it was a case for a Zippo lighter. Damn! did I just give you an idea? lol
@parillaworks
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Cliff! The zippo was one of the inspirations for the design.
Great little box! Not sure if you've tried this before but with the fostner bit and your drill press you can do many overlapping holes and get rid of a lot of those little triangles as you call them. They make some very small barrel hinges that you might try on the next one. It might allow you to mount two hinges to stop it from racking. Try searching pen box hinges. I enjoy the pace of your videos and the great stills at the end.
@parillaworks

Thanks for the great comment Tom. Pretty helpful tip with the forester bit. You know, I've tried those tiny barrel hinges and had such a hard time installing them let alone finding a drill bit that actually matched the diameter. I think I tried every increment of 64th of an inch as well as millimeters and still couldn't get a nice snug fit. Anyway, maybe I'll give them another shot one day. Thanks again for the comment.
@AaronReynolds89
6 жыл бұрын
Just found this, have you looked at "letter gauge drill bit sizes"? A lot of kits will require a letter sized bit which actually exist between the metric and 1/64 increments. Gauge:A Inches:0.234 Metric (mm):5.944
This is a great job man. I have one question. Is there a reason why you didnt use the cnc for the holes as well?!
oooo me likely likely Coco Bolo!
Looks a lot like a wooden Zippo lighter. Like a really expensive wooden Zippo lighter. Nice wood

Thank you! Maybe there was an error in translation but I think you might be asking about the hinges. They're 10mm barrel hinges.
@Carlson_without_motor

parillaworks, thank you!
What size bit did you use for the barrel hinges?
@parillaworks
4 жыл бұрын
I believe they were 10mm barrel hinges so I used a 10mm drill bit. The hinges can be expanded to fill the hole for a firm fit.
I need some help, I can get the hinge to open the lid right. How much space are you leaving at the end of the box for the hinge to actually work?
@parillaworks
5 жыл бұрын
I haven't made any of these boxes in a while but I from my drawing it says the center of the hinge is 0.27" from the end of the box.
Great job, looks like a zippo

I got them on amazon some time ago. I think it was a 100 pack of 1/8" x 1/8" magnets. I use a 7/64" bit and press fit them.

parillaworks thanks for the quick reply. Can't seem to find them on the Canadian version of Amazon. I'll keep trying.
Lol the statement about pretending to choose a piece of wood was epic
Hello! Write me please, from where did you buy this hinge? Thank you!!
@parillaworks
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bubu. I bought it locally but you can search for "boss barrel hinge" to find something of similar or better quality. I used the 10mm version but there are other sizes.
What size magnets did you use? Neodymium? Magnets can be tricky if they are to powerful or not powerful enough
@parillaworks
5 жыл бұрын
1/8” x 1/8” neodymium. They don’t have a ton of strength but the hinge is fairly tight anyway.

do you have the infeed and outfeed tables for the 735 planer they would not have helped with the small pieces but normally when people complain about snipe on that planer they we doing longer pieces and not using infeed of outfeed tables
@parillaworks
6 жыл бұрын
Good call. Ya I've been meaning to buy those attachments but haven't gotten around to it. In the back of my head I'm hoping a big floor standing planer pops up on craigslist for me to snag.
@doublebulbing
6 жыл бұрын
well the 735 is a great machine if you are stuck on 120 volts like I am but if you have 240 then yea watching the used market and buying something bigger is probally the smart thing to do You could always make wood one for the dewalt but why when the DW7351's are 43.64 shipped ply wood would cost about that to build something The good thing is they pop on and off easy so if you need the space savings they are great not being fixed like my drum sander extensions that bug the hell out of me my 16/32 sander that thing takes up way too much room
how did you get the hinges??
@parillaworks
6 жыл бұрын
I think you can get them on Amazon. Look for Soss Barrel Hinges, 10mm.
you should make some zippo lighter cases , walnut that would sell good . i mean make the actual sleeve they insert the lighter portion . not a box to protect it , cool build

What CNC do you use?
@parillaworks

It's the Shapeoko XXL with the Dewalt router. I've realized the XXL is overkill and takes up too much space in my shop. Would probably get the XL if I did it over again.
I misread the title. I thought it said Chocobo XD
His idea for mitigating the wandering of the band saw blade was genius! Btw, what is the technical term for this? I can't seem to remember...

What were final dimensions for the box?
@parillaworks

It was in the neighborhood of 2" x 4" x 0.875". I think it was a little under 2" x 4" or so.
What song are you keeping on repeat in the background? Lol.
@parillaworks
6 жыл бұрын
Well the sped up audio all sounds like chipmunks. But I do usually keep one song on repeat each day I work but I'm not sure which I listened to during this build.

Just discover your Vids, Great work Man. But it seems to be difficult to get the ring out of the Box. Holding between two layers of Felt . You have always to "shoot" him out, or shake the Ring out of the Box
@benmcgreevy5950
6 жыл бұрын
ComicClub01 what are you talking about? Why would you shoot the ring? Haha
@ComicClub01
6 жыл бұрын
The Box is way deeper than a ring. The groove is so smal that the Ring will not fall around and is hold between the layers of Felt. But when you push the Ring totally into the Box, you cant touch him, nomore ? so you have to shake the Box, or tap it (Like Cigarette Boxes) to make "shoot" the Ring out of the Box. Maybe I m in Error, but that was what I was thinking about first.
@MarkHanford
6 жыл бұрын
The solution is simply to not push the ring totally into the box.
@parillaworks
6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn't answer your question earlier. The holes are only an inch or so deep, maybe less. The ring would bottom out before the stone is fully "submerged."
