Making a Revolving Stage

We wanted to build a revolving stage,
But it had to be lightweight and easy to operate using DMX-Control
We used 21 casterwheels Rubber (with bearings, non swiveling)
800 Watt DC-motor (Alpatec) with reductor and controller
DMX-relais/analog converter (The Willows)
Meanwell 1000Watt DC-powersupply
about 12 meters of Velcro (for the stageskirt)
And loads of manhours...
p.s. This Revolving stage is for rent...
(alles zit eronder)
De Draaischijf is te huur...

⚠️ God has said in the Quran: 🔵 { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 ) 🔴 [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 ) 🔵 And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 ) 🔴 But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 ) 🔵 And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 ) ⚠️ Quran

I did not see this bearing, because someone made it for me, but the principle is simple: if you insert a conical shaft for either bottom or deck and place the bearing in a conical-bed for the other side, you're ready, but you could also use smaller bearings and put them in a circle. if you can get one, there are also special bearings for this type of application

The motor is a 900Watt DC Motor. RPM 1000, but this is brought down by a gearbox. This drives a 8cm frictionwheel on the bottom of the disk. How much you need depends on the weight of your revolving stage plus the load you like it to bear. Then you need to decide how fast it should accelerate or decellerate. I called a couple of manufacturers and asked them for their advise. most people were happy to help me with some good advice. Also some manufacturers have no stock, so it woult take up half a year for the motor to arive. keep that in mind and always call them up. Good luck and please let me know how your project is progressing!

Hi E Q, Because the turntable was made from 1 layer of plywood, reinforced with wooden beams it is quite lightweight. It is easy to build with two persons. if you add all components together it will be about 300kg (esimation) the cost for all the materials will be around € 2600,- but I was lucky to have some used plywood wich I got for free. It is the man-hours that would make it really expensive if you couldn't build it yourself. To place or remove it from the stage will take about 20 minutes.

I've had no issues of the platform spinning on its own. The weight of the platform plays a big role in it. you might get it to move by hand, but if that is really a big issue you can always try to add a break or a motion feedback system where you let the motor break the disk. as the frictionwheel is strong enough to spin it up it is also strong enough to break it.

This is absolutely fantastic! I am in the process of building something similar for my son's production of The Music Man at his senior year in high school. I have a few questions, I hope you can help. I see it is a 800 w motor, and I see the power supply is 24 V DC. What may I ask is the RPM of the motor? Can you provide the dimensions of the Draw Bolt Catches? The shop plans provided in comments below show a layer of plywood decking (top layer, layer 1), 2 layers of wood for the 'tongue and grove' interlocking underneath (layers 2 and 3, from the top), and another layer of plywood (layer 4). The images of the deck turned upside down at minute 1:00 appear to only have 3 layers. What layer number rides on the casters? I know it has been years since you built this, but thank you for your response :D

thank you for your reply, our revolving stage in fact does not have that many layers to it. We only use 1 layer of multiplex, but we reinforced it with wooden beams. the wooden beams are used to make tongue and grooves. it is this layer also that ride on the caster-wheels. it took some woodshaving to get it strait though. So I'm not sure that is the easiest aproach. it does make our stage very lightweight. the drawbolt catches are about 75 mm, but if I had to do it again, i would use bigger ones, because that would make them sturdier.

If you have a local manufacturer in you neighbourhood I advise you to call them up. Usually they have such great knoledge that you will be glad you did. I would like to replicate your idea for the dismantling as I would like to reuse it , but can’t quite understand the wood works …have you got any drawings.. ? if you look closely you can see the boards laying out on the floor. It is only one layer of multiplex. (plywood) and two layers of wooden frame. we used two layers of wood so the bends on the wood could be the oposite of each other to avoid bending in the structure if that makes sense... the tonge and groove are in the middle layer of wood (so the first of the extra layers under the plywood.

O now I see what you mean, 245,45 is simply the distance between the two crosspoints of the bottom half or the disk. it is the length that the quarter-ring with casterwheels has. This is important if you like to move the stage.
