Hi, forgive me for asking this if it is a dumb question, but you are the first trainers I've seen ride double bridle like that and I am curious as to why you do it that way rather than just choosing the bit or the bosal. Just would like a little more knowledge on your style. Thank you

Hey Roxanne, That's a great question. The setup Sid is riding in is called the Two Rein. The bosal is a smaller diamater than a standard bosal and is called a bosalita. The set is designed to be a transitional tool in the training of a bridle horse. Eventually this horse will be in the bridle only, but we love the reassurance and confidence this setup gives our horses while moving from the snaffle or bosal, into the bridle alone. It's not as commonly seen because it's more of a vaquero style piece of gear. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing this and nice job! What a sweet horse! Is that a typical warm-up for a quiet horse like this? Did you already have him out of his stall and ride earlier in the day or is that all he needed what you showed us here? Just wondering how you might adjust your strategy for a horse that is not as laid-back as this one appears to be, to get them warmed up but not over-tired on show day. Any tips or advice to finding that balance? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

Hey Emily, great question. On a greener horse like this one we like to take them on short, quiet rides around the place without schooling them too hard leading up to the day they show. This one, as you observed, doesn't have a lot of excess energy, so it's important to get in and get out and not pick on too many things. You just have to trust your horse and your program to work for you. On hotter horses, we might do 2 or even 3 short but strong rides on the day of the show to get them mentally settled, instead of riding them into the ground right before the class. What we really focus on is getting each horse mentally relaxed, instead of worn out. Gassed horses don't show their best. Thanks for watching! Hope this helps!

Here we are 6 months later, and I must say, this one small gem of insight you shared in your reply to my comment - to concentrate on the mental state of each horse leading up to show day, not so much on just getting them physically tired out, helped me to win 3 Ranch Riding buckles on 3 different horses this season! So THANK YOU!! Your advice proved to be very helpful and I appreciate it so much! I shifted my whole focus this season to the horse's mental state and, wow, what a difference! The horses and I all are happier.

How can you show in a basal and a full bridle together?????

It’s a two-rein setup. The setup is a combination of a spade bridle and a bosalita (literally “little bosal,” I believe they’re usually 1/4” or thinner. It’s used as an “in between” step when transferring from bosal to bridle. The rider will vary which rein they use more depending on the training level of the horse.
