Great project and video editing. Congrats Casey. The pine cones are not as hard as wood so, do you recomend to stabilize pine cones to make hybrids in order to avoid that issues with? Thank you.

  • @CaseyMartin707

Salvi Mithrin Thanks Salvi. I would recommend stabilizing them, although I had no issues with them not being hard. The issue I had was with hot glue, not the pinecone.

The blank that you could not use, together with any other off cuts, can be put in a bag, hammer them into bits. when you have a colourful mixture cast in more Alumilite in different shape & make bottle stopper, or a gear stick handle, a bottle opener or key chain or??????

great looking pen Casey and well done with the video. Just one small thing but it makes a difference to the finish. You need to cross polish the pen before you put it together... if you watch Zac Higgins he buffs the barrels length ways to get rid of the 'very' fine polishing lines that go around the barrels.... I'm a jeweller and that's one of the first things we learn about finishing and polishing... just food for thought but great work though :)

Peter Gordon Hey peter I agree and I actually usually do buff my pens length wise, I’ve done so in a few of my videos. I actually did after the pen was put together after editing the video and seeing the micro lines on there. Of course I should’ve done so before but it served the same purpose and I got rid of almost all of them.

exactly .. when I do these things (mostly with metal) on a lathe, I sand it down to 2000 grid and then the buffing. also, i buff against wheel so I can get rid of that directional reflections.

Really nice blank and pen, Casey. One word of caution. You need to put the tool rest very near the blank and hold the handle of the tool better. A catch would have your tool flipping up and out of your hands. They call this mechanical advantage - like a teeter-totter. The closer the rest, the more leverage is in your favor. Cheers.

  • @CaseyMartin707

Hey Steve, I usually have my tool rest really close. I’m not sure if it looked far away in this video or not but it’s close. I’ve also had plenty of catches and never had something like you’re describing happen. A lathe is turning the material downward, so a catch would only push the tool down onto the tool rest harder. I’m not sure how it would ever be possible for it to flip the tool upwards towards me.

  • @CaseyMartin707

I see how you could be saying that after it pushes it down the tool then comes back up like you described a teeter totter. However I’ve never had this happened and I think my tool rest is always close enough. It might look farther away in the video than it really is

Hey Casey, nice vid. I just did a block of pen blanks from pine cones from my yard. I used the blue and white like I've seen before here and they are gorgeous. It's a great color combo. Mine were stabilized and I still had issues with bubbles in the blank. I'm wondering if it was more a matter of the resin just not getting everywhere. I plan to try others. Wish I could post a pic here as this is such a gorgeous color combo. Could you talk about how you filled the hole a little more? It would help me in the future. I was one of your pen blank winners earlier this year. I still haven't turned it as I want to improve my skills for that beautiful blank. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Howard Camardelle Hey Howard! What PSI are you putting yours too? Make sure you’re going as high as possible, as I didn’t have problems with my resin making air pockets with the pine cones, but maybe I got lucky. All I did was put some CA glue on it and put it shavings and dust from the turning. Once the glue had been fully hardened with accelerator I just turned it off. I actually kind of wish I only used CA glue so that it was clear, but oh well.

Casey Martin went to 50. I’ll admit I’m leery of going higher even though the pot says 90. I’m not done trying for sure. Thanks for the tip.
