Making a Yakut knife from an old metal file and a piece of branch stabilized with a polymer. The knife is made in accordance with northern Yakut knife-making design: a simple handle and asymmetrical blade.

    beautifully crafted knife I've seen a documentary about the tribes that live with reindeers and their explanation for the shape of the blade was simply that metal is a scarce resource and this indentation allows for a knife of adequate size with less raw materials

    I politely make this suggestion: DO NOT STAND ON YOUR BLADE...if it failed, you could very easily have received a crippling injury. There are other ways to perform the same test, safer ways. I laud your knife making and your skills. You do excellent work and provide interesting content. There is no need for you to get hurt doing it.

    Normally, a file is too high in carbon for this to work out well, but this is how tempering keeps the hardness of the file on the edge - yet imparts flexibility into the spine... Perfection. This is what you want. This is high carbon brittle steel being worked at it's finest. A pleasure to watch a master blade smith at work.

    The traditional handle method of fitting the tang helps me out a lot and gives me a great way to try it I just got a Yakut knife blank as a gift and I want to make a really nice handle for it

    This is a very beautiful piece, love the craftsmanship and simplicity of the blade. I won't be able to copy that any time soon, i'm in no position to set up even a little forge now. But i'm always to more of this quality content

    I've made a Yakut knife. It was very enjoyable and can be done with even lump charcoal, a hair dryer a hammer and a sledge hammer head as an anvil.
