Making a new table for the radial arm saw

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I construct a new and improved cutting table for the radial arm saw that my grandfather gave me.

Very good effort on your new table build for your radial arm saw. It’s definitely better and more functional than what was on there before. However, here’s a few tips to help you build a better table… The purpose of the “Mr. Sawdust” build is to create a perfectly flat table. To do that, the lamination/glue up must be performed on a perfectly flat surface under heavy weight. You can’t laminate it vertically with just a few clamps (you need to press and hold it flat until the glue dries). Secondly, the steel bars must be set in the grooves with epoxy. Otherwise they move/float in the grooves and can’t perform their function to retain the overall flatness. I strongly suggest buying the book “How to Master the Radial Arm Saw” by Wally Kunkel-it’s an invaluable resource! Keep rocking and stay safe!

Thanks for the info, yeah if I were to do it again I probably would have prepared a bunch of concrete blocks to set on top of it so it would have ended up flatter.

Great that you have the initiative to make a new top for yourself, a good top with a sacrificial top will last a lift time. Having owned and used a number of RAS for over 40 years May I suggest that you use a push stick or board when you rip and always push. You have more control of the material at the fence. That way you don’t get “blow outs” at the end of the cut and should something go wrong the wood will not br thrown into you but away from you!

For your sacrificial top I’ve used tempered hardboard (aka Masonite) as it has no grain. You’ll find a property setup RAS is extremely versatile

I know this video is 2 years old, but I feel like I have to comment about something you did in this video. One of the most dangerous ways to use a radial arm saw, or even a table saw for that matter, is to pull the wood out of the saw after it has been cut. Please don't do that again, none of us want to see a fellow woodworker get injured, especially because of a careless mistake. The safest way to use these types of saws is to use a push stick, or push block between the blade and the fence. Use the push stick close to the blade, as opposed to the fence. Simple laws of physics go in place here, if you use the push stick closer to the fence, as you push the wood through the rip cut, the opposing end of the plywood can start to drift towards the blade, resulting in kickback. If you use the push stick closer to the blade, the opposing end of the wood is going to be pushed towards the fence, keeping your cut straight, and greatly reducing the chance of kickback. KZreadr "Stumpy Nubs" did a great video on this subject.

Nice work. I recently got one of those saws and I’m discovering things about it.

Just don’t do what he did and go to the other side. If that would’ve grabbed and pulled that, he’d be missing some digits or half his face

Beautiful work! I've been trying to revitalize my table, but I'm stuck at connecting the front part to the saw body. I can't tell how you've got yours connected. I saw your old one has screw holes, what I'm trying to make. wanting to have slots for pulling it back and forth for alignment to square using bolts with washers running over the holes. My bolts are wanting to tear down into the wood channels I've dremeled out. How are yours connected?

There are holes, they are just under the sacrificial quarter inch piece of plywood. I got the alignment as close as possible by measuring from the sides to where I drilled the holes, but there was a bit of wiggle room on the body. Then any other front to back alignment was really just adjusting the built in measuring tape on top of the saw.

Are you aware that there is a safety kit for free for this saw. A class action suit forced the manufacturer to issue one, you get a saw guard and a new table for free,

I have never seen that kit for free. It always cost money every where I looked. On top of that the kits I’ve seen don’t come with a new table. If you wanna link it in a comment I’ll take a look at it however, I probably won’t get it because the new guards are made out of plastic instead of metal. I believe there is a way to add side guards to the metal blade guard. That is probably what I would go with if I ever took that route.

Great work, But please do not pull the material on a rip. The RAS is a great saw. But like every tool it must br used properly. L
