Making a new PID controller for sterilizing mushroom substrate
I have used my old PID controller for sterilizing mushroom substrate for a long time. It was connected to a 2.5kw element. This element had to heat up upwards of 500kg of substrate, which took over 100megajoules, so it took too long to get it to temperature. I ended up re-building the PID controller so it was fit to use a 4.5kw element.

Can't wait to see more updates and videos on your website. I'm taking notes and can't wait for more
Love that you managed to get blowing the breaker on film
In my understanding PID it's not made for our purpose because we don't want the temperature to drop below boiling point anyway. Correct me if I am wrong I would much rather use timer it's much easier Thanks mate appreciate your hard work and keep it up
PLEASE PLEASE Make a video on setting up a PID controllers settings for a atmospheric steam sterilizer
Hey mate. How much did it cost you for your PID controller set up? And what did it cost you to have your steamer built. So I can get a relatively close comparison for my build. Thanks I love your set up. Cheers. 👍👍🎯
Have you started using a thermocouple probe for your substrate? I am trying to figure out how long the blocks need to reach 95c to be effective. I have heard various times... Wondering if you have any incite.
So funny! I am building 3 new PID controllers right now... I have a Bubba's Barrels PID that keeps failing on me.. the relays are shit.. So I have to replace them regularly. The PID for our steamers really needs to be quite simple.. Just 110v controlling 30 amp service to the element...

I can build them for $70 US
Hi Thomas! Are you planning to be on AMGA in October in Australia?
What size bag do you typically use and what is the weight of the substrate in the bag?
Hey mate, love the content you’ve been sharing and wanted to thank you but can I ask, does it need to be a Ramp Soak PID or is the one in the video good enough? I notice a vast difference in price and was wondering if it’s necessary to have that function in order to hold temperature for a set time. Cheers

cheap pids work fine. It's not really even using the pid function, it's just using a n on/off function.
Hey . Have you used your Chinese autoclave ? And do u like it ?
Where can I find plans and parts for this?
Can you grow mushrooms without all the equipment or is that fruitless?

maybe, "all the equipment" is a very loose term.

Depends if you want mushrooms just for yourself and family, or to grow for market.

There are infinite teks (techniques) for mushroom growing. Long as you understand pasteurization, sterilization and you have good sterile techniques. It can be done in an instant pot or $6000 machine.

Uncle Ben's Tek is where you should start and then grow from there. 90 second mycology has a great easy tek which uses UB 90 second rice which is already sterile usually. I did my first grow with 6 bags. I didn't use a still air box, I cleaned my room well, sprayed with vinegar, wiped my table with alcohol and wore rubber gloves. I just flame sterilized the needle on my Golden Teachers spore syringe and injected it into the top of bag then covered the hole with breathable tape, (i can't recall the name). Once they were mostly colonized i broke and shook the rice cake then another couple of weeks they were ready to spawn to bulk. I used shoebox containers, coco, verm and gypsum and got amazing results for my first grow and breaking every rule. One shroom weighed 28 grams wet. Watch 90 second mycology then when your ready for more go to Philly Golden Teacher. Most simple, basic approach with great yields. Don't worry about it to much starting then increase your quality/quality with products and better techniques. A still air box is a very good idea but pressure cookers, flow hoods, etc aren't necessary until they are and you will know when you need such equipment. Also I didn't have a humidifier or anything but a room, shelf, fan and a fine mist sprayer for water. Bout to get some agar next week boi!
Hey mate, sorry if you've been asked this before - what temp are you getting your substrate up to with steam? Everywhere I read, the consensus seems to be that Masters Mix needs to be sterilized under pressure and reach 110c+ for 90min. I've used steam for a small batch (5 bags), held at around 98c for 4 hours, it was fine with no contamination. Very small sample size though.

I do 95c, cook for around 24 hours. I do believe you can cook for a much much shorter period though.
What is the thermocouple doing? it's in the water right? i know they are used in gas heating devices and i get how they work but is it measuring a certain temp accurately? in gas it's simply to know if the flame when out to cut the flow of gas, i didn't know they could (or where used for) measuring temperature with precision.

Its in the sterilizing tank, not the water. The water always boils at 100c, you need the sterilizing tank to hit 95c.
Is there a reason your not using 2 x 4500w elements? I'm assuming it would cut down on heat up time? Cheers

It would, but running two would require a much larger draw on power, and it might start overloading my circuits.

Or you could just buy an inkbird

An inkbird pid? Sure. Any pid will work
