Making a Modern Mailbox
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I made a modern mailbox out of wood and steel that does NOT require welding. I used Quikrete Fast-Setting concrete mix set into a 8” Quiktube to make the foundation. I cast a 10” piece of galvanized 3/4” steel pipe into the concrete. The Mailbox is made out of 3/16” plate steel that I bent using an angle grinder and MakerBrand T-Bar Clamps. The oak doors have a magnet that sticks to a piece of 1” angle steel inside the mailbox. This piece of angle steel is attached with Krazy Glue Gel. I learned how strong Krazy Glue is at a recent event that pitted the worlds strongest man against Krazy Glue in an epic battle of Man Vs. Glue. Not only an awesome build and mailbox, but there were SO many great tips and tricks included throughout...simple blue tape FTW!
From experience, The pipe in the cement will not last. It will soon loosen. The solution would be to put a few 90's and some tee's so the pipe will not wiggle loose. Also a fence post would be better. Nice project though. Looks good.
The combination of wood and steel is great!
I was just looking all over youtube for a "modern mailbox" build last week. There weren't any! Well done filling yet another gap in my world, HomeMadeModern.
Waiting for the tiny house tour, great video as always
*My Mailman is gonna love this*

_Bob McCoy or really hate it... it really depends on how sturdy it is and if it opens well.... plus u also have to consider weather proofing it to make sure it doesn’t rust.....

The bigger the mail box, the more we love it. Makes our routes so much easier
I'm glad to see the clamps in use... those things look hefty!!! Now I get what you all were saying on the pod cast about how tough they were.
That’s a great looking mailbox. I have one on my to do list for next year. I might do something similar.
That builds a great test for the Maker Brand clamps. Not like doing a pull up on one, but more practical

This turned out looking awesome!
Nice build, Ben! It’s always enjoyable watching your videos 👍🏻
How about using magnets for the flag positions?

I love this project!
This is everything a video should be. Good job
Your mailbox looks awesome! Great job!
Sweet gloves @ 3:19 I think they make a nice statement Ben!
Really cool Ben! 👍🏻👊🏻
Little bit wobbly there at the end Ben! ;) Cool project and interesting mix of materials for this!
You are such a good channel!! I really want it get into wood working!
I like your creativity...taking a boring object and making it your own. It's been pointed out that you need your postmaster's approval, which I'm sure you will. I would have drilled a hole at the end of the pipe, inserted a key of sorts, so as to prevent the pipe and mailbox from spinning. Nice tip on how to make the bends.
Love checking out the things you make, and have recently started listening to the podcast! In the video I noticed you using the Roybi sliding mitre saw. I have the same one, and it cuts perfectly square when the saw is pushed all the way back, but when pulled forward it goes from about 1/16"-1/8" off. Any thoughts on how I might square that up??
Cute mailbox, but those desert winds are definitely going to knock it over

If its because of the shape they won’t I live in Palm Springs and people build them in that shape all the time I don’t know about the post though
Very impressive!
nice build. maybe for a next video you do a tool tour, talk about what your everyday tools
awesome Ben! and congrats on 1mil subs, ive just noticed :)

OSO DIY maker brand is cheaply made
3:15 Nice leopard gloves 👍😊 You should make a project with only flex tape!
You should weld scrap pieces of steel to the galv tube you set in the concrete, you’ll find it holds in the concrete a lot stronger.
Just needs a lock !!! Looks nice different base maybe
Nice mailbox
Shakes like crazy though
Cool. Now I just need to built a house, to go along with my new mailbox 😉 (*dreams*)
love the podcast
I’m sad I just now found this - but LOVE it!!!!
Pretty cool. As a mail carrier, I like the big mailboxes a lot. I do prefer a red flag though. Easier to see from a distance as there is more contrast.
Amazing :)
Crazy glue, eh? :D Maybe I should check that out! Can in an instant think of the first 5 crazy things where I could use a glue like that! :D Thank you Sir for yet another great video..
Awesome gloves !! 👐
bravo!
It looks great although the pole looks a little wiggly. Maybe go up to a 2" pipe would be more stable and be more proportional too.
Oak is a perfectly suitable timber for outdoor purposes
Wow
How is white oak not good for outdoor use? It's extremely resistant to moisture
thats some thick metal just to hold bills
What a fun project! 3/16" steel is da bomb. Bullets won't penetrate! I would have been the lazy guy and bent the steel away from the cuts, duct taped the outside seam & painted right over it. :)
Nothin with one piece of conduit holding it up is classified as heavy duty my guy
You should go down to your local Post Office to see if everything is up to code. The space inside the mailbox is technically considered as federal so there are many laws surrounding it.

Nice jod keep going like this!!!! And the glue is strong enough to keep the iron from going outside together with the magnet , when you pull the door. So you havenot to tell about the strongman, yo have the real example in this video ;)
Nice gloves!

Anything specific that you want to point out?
A modern mailbox is called an email. Ok sorry couldn't resist, pretty cool!
# C00L Mailbox ⚪👍👍
You made it more complicated then you had to and all the screws showing and the flag in something that takes away from the look. I made one with no screws showing and a flag that pulls out and is hidden on the inside. I would put picture if I could at the end of this statement.
Why wouldn't the red oak be very suitable for an outside project.? Here in the UK the problem with using wood outside is the wood rotting due to the high moisture level because of the wet weather.. You look like you live in a desert 🐫🤪

Lostboy. Oak will turn black if it gets wet. Not a great outdoor wood for that reason.

Nick Toga if it’s correctly treated and maintained it should be perfectly fine outdoors, it’s used especially in the UK for outdoor purposes all the time
Nice gloves
Why steel? Wouldn’t aluminum be easier and more cost effective? I mean, it’s just holding paper products? And not even that, it’s a wood base, the “roof” of the box just protects from rain.
Where’s Gary?
Flimsy
Dont be surprised if your mailbox is gone oneday if you didnt get it approved by the postmaster general
keep your day job...
overbuilt
the winds gonna blow that thing down. not sturdy enuff.
I'm sorry, but you can tell that dude ain't even trying to break that!!! I do the exact same thing, with that exact same face, when my kids ask me to open a water bottle....good actor though lol
Great job, but where is your name on the mailbox, Jimmy D would tagged it long ago. Very nice looking.
...
You should have used other magnets to lock the flag in positions. Your stop system looks flimsy.
Can I use this on my Gmailbox?

No Rebar in the concrete??????
@kent3592

No need for this type of fundation where the concrete only works in compression ;)
that flag is gonna hurt someone XD
This may sound dumb to Americans. But why have you put a flag on a mail box..? I genuinely don’t know, mail (we just say letters) boxes aren’t used as often as they used to be here in England (or at least where I live) as most people just have a letter box on our doors. A letter box is the slot in the door where you post the letters. So does the flag have a purpose or just decorative? Ignore my bad grammar, unable to sleep and it’s 5.30am lol.

We don't get mail every day. The flag is put in the up position to alert the mailman there is outgoing mail. When he picks it up, he puts it down.
what does flag on mailbox mean in usa?
@alexreith4877

Giman Lim you put the flag up when you have outgoing mail for the postal carrier to pick up, and they put it back down when they've picked up the mail you put there.

Just another piece of junk so they can please their sponsors! Anybody that knows anything about metal fabrication would cringe at his so called way of bending metal!
Looks really ugly, like an old drawer! You could have made a much prettier one but you didn't
