Peachy! Big love my man, so humbled and stoked to have your eyes and words on my video! Yo for real though, this same game concept and idea, BUT - instead of 5 convicts, you have 1 Bames Jond figure you place in the center, and in each corner you place a bad guy goon! Instead of gritty prison battles it can turn into that James Bond Spy fi game you mentioned sometime ago! Man I wanna try that now. Lets make a game man.

It kind of goes against the one box theme, but you can expand the weapon/equipment options with the other Cannon Fodder box, which has a different special weapon, and the the Wargames Atlantic Accessory Sprue which has shotguns and laser guns on it that all go well with the Fodder.

Game design is not an arcane art, anyone can do it. This is what gaming should be. The indies and the DIYers are really the true spirit of gaming. Look up old names like Featherstone, Bath, Hyde, Conliff, Morschauser, not only did they write rules, they wrote about how to make your own rules. Here on YT the British Pathe' series has several old newsreels on people doing exactly what is being done in this video. This stuff needs to be where people go, 40k is not accessible, one box and a few quickly jotted notes to agreed upon parameters and you have a game. #accessingaming

Hear hear! This was my early gamer life, English magazines with one-shot/scenario rules in each issue that my mates and I would hack to let us play a different way. Cardboard counters and hand-written rules of our own devising - gamers free and in control of our own experience. I slipped out of that life for a couple of decades, lured by the pretty models and glossy propaganda and product catalogue James Workshop dangled before me - but I'm returning to my game-punk roots now, rediscovering the joys of making stuff with my hands and what passes for my brain. Long live open-source, support the indies, and just make your own stuff!

@@malevminipainting4453 I'm thinking of making a game like this. I think commercial Wargames are escalating when it comes to cost, amount of work, units and terrain etc. Not every one has the amount of disposable income + free time to paint 90 minis, build a 4x4 foot terrain set and has a friend circle of 6 people for each faction.

I the concept is solid. You have to use the terrain and perks strategically to defeat the opponent. Trying to avoid a fair playing ground. But you also have to balance out for the opponent once you get a perk or bonus, maybe some sort of "commando point" or simply having to remain a complete turn on the perk to get it etc.

@@malevminipainting4453 "driving force for me to make miniatures gams that are played primarily solo!" That's why I got myself into Five Parsecs From Home. It's a neat concept, I also liked that you played around 6 vs 6. But the table heavy outside skirmish game kind of demotivated me. He should have made a small board game overworld or space travel like in Faster Than Light (the Indie Game) or in Fallout the BoardGame with the HexGrid, but fights are skirmishes. Something about either a historical melee, which was basically just a crap-ton of knights in an enclosed space duking it out for sport, or something like Dark Souls PVP, where positioning for backstabs, timing of attacks and blocks, dodging, parries, and the like is key. It uses action points as dice pool, each action point is either die or an inch movement. The skill + weapon describes dice or limit of dice you have/can take out the action pool. I have a free form magic system that works with limits. etc.

@@malevminipainting4453 mana, endurance/action points could be a dice pool limit. What I'm also looking at for a wargame is D20 and default Target Value is 10 (50% chance), from there on things can be modded up and down, skills and obstacles, resistance etc. If the opponent rolls an opposed roll, you roll against their skill+bonus+mods etc. But you can't do "action points = amount of dice (including damage cap".

That sounds really cool! And, I am also pretty keen on using the d20 in a design sometime. I'm sooo not used to the swing of a d20 every time I use one it can feel like I roll low for agesss

@@malevminipainting4453 "I'm sooo not used to the swing of a d20 every time I use one it can feel like I roll low for agesss" Yeah D20 can become swingy, because of the random range. But you can balance it out properly so mods and skill play a bigger roll.

Just watching this, I thought of a few things that could be added for more flavor to the game: The nonplayer convicts could have different stats/rules (like one change or extra rule, two at the most) based on what they are in for (like a hitman being better at shooting, a gang inforcer being better at melee, a drug addict thats had his brain fried by whatever superdrug is around having no sense of selfpresurvation, and some guy in for tax fraud illsuited for combat) A five level campain that goes from minimium security (tax fraud type guys) to supermax (super dangerous and capiable opponits) in a bid for your freedom (rolling on different tables for each level) A bit of a lore idea here: not only are your fighting for your freedom, but also your individual identity. All of which was striped from you on incarseration. Name, race, face, all removed, a number is all you are now. You are not even classed as human anymore. I can expand on these ideas more, if interested.

Sorry mate, but 7 minutes in and I think you have missed the point. 1. Any table top game can be exciting if its genre fits your desire for the game. At the moment I am building to enact a battle where Mongols meet US Marines. 2. You seem to be into skirmish combats at the moment on a very small scale. Have you thought of D&D where one on one combats are a thing as adventurers seek fame and fortune. You could get this in the board games that involve figures. 3. You can reduce any combat system to a smaller combat scenario. Playing Dystopian Wars we reduced the combat down to two capital ships where the engagement took place in some shallows. The ultimate manoeuvre pinned one on some rocks leading to crippling damage. The point I am trying to make is there is nothing wrong with being creative. It exercises the mind and introduces new themes to people. But the inferences I was getting from your presentation was that big battles were old hat. If I am wrong my apologies, but I just played in a big game which involved about 30 people in a WW2 Normandy operation. It was fun, fast and resulted in unexpected outcomes. Just saying. Big or small it is the fun of the game that is important.

Cheers my man, I appreciate the thoughtful and insightful comment! I am not sure where I miscommunicated persay, because your comment reads very in support of the things in which I'm talking about. The point that I'm trying to make is also that there is nothing wrong with being creative, and that we can play/make our *own* games however we'd like! You're not wrong though, I do like smaller scale miniatures games. But I like to design miniatures solo games. And that being the case, painting up 50+ miniatures isn't going to help. But I don't have anything *against* other designs or desires, just have a preference for what I personally go for in my solo designs. I'd love to design a mass combat big battle game.

Bloody great video mate! Title drew me in with promises of DIY minimalist design, and you delivered. And just when I'm getting in the groove - "record_needle_scratch.wav" - I find myself in another groove. Dope. Anyway, I love this concept - it poked my brain in just the right way to inspire some ideas of my own. In a world where it feels like we can have anything at the touch of a button, it's healthy to be reminded of just how powerful constraints and limitations can be as a tool for unlocking creative pathways.
