    Insane. Do you have a rough estimate on how much material cost went into the case? I assume the CNC, laser cutter, etc. usage was free, but do you know how much that'd cost if outsourced to a shop?

  • @koovin02

    @koovin02

    Жыл бұрын

    There is a big difference between one-off costs and production run costs, because it is always cheaper to buy materials in bulk and it is very time consuming for manufacturers to setup for just a single prototype. If you play your cards carefully and your design is simple you could probably stay under 200-300 USD for material costs for a single prototype. However, labor costs are expensive and I've heard that you can expect to pay at least 500 USD for a single prototype to be manufactured. Again, it depends on the design complexity so you can expect it to reach up to 1000 USD if you aren't careful

    It's not typical for keyboard designers to create machine code and actually operate the CNC machines, most just send their designs to overseas manufacturers for a few rounds of prototypes before production. However, this still requires an understanding of CNC machining limitations during the design process. Whether or not you machine it yourself, it will still cost a lot of money.
