MAKING A LEATHER DESK PAD

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

PRE-ORDER for Desk Pads is closed. However, I do have one Large Desk Pad available for purchase. Head here to snag it!:

This Leather Desk Pad was a quick project for my buddy Tim who recently moved up to Vancouver, WA and wanted something to spruce up his new desk set-up. We went through a couple options for leather and settled on the 6-7oz thick Chestnut skirting leather I had available from the Wickett & Craig tannery. Once the piece was all sewn up, I noticed it was a bit dry in parts and applied a coat of Smith's Leather Balm. This stuff is awesome. It's all natural and works great for bolstering the longevity of your leathergoods.
Lastly, the pad's edges were beveled and burnished for a professional look and to protect the edges.
If you have any questions about a tool, technique or material, please comment below and I will get back to you.

Great Piece! What are you using to burnish? Looks like a dremel but where did you find the attachment? All the best and thanks in advance!!

Thanks! Yep, it's a cocobolo wood burnishing attachment for my rotary dremel. I don't think they have the same set anymore, but I got it from www.proedgeburnishers.com/index.html Hope this helps! Cheers -Ted

Aside from aesthetics, does the stitching accomplish anything for flatness, longevity, etc?

Not really. If you were to be stitching another piece to make it thicker that would we one thing. But no one seems to want just a blank desk pad lately; they still want the stitching.

What oils and waxes do you use and why? I'm having trouble keeping my leather flat :/

Hello! I often will let the leather hang off something in the opposite direction of the bend to relieve any stresses before cutting from the hide. Other times, I will roll the leather in the opposite direction of the curvature to attempt to reverse any previous memory of the piece when the hide was rolled and shipped. I like to use Mink oil when I am looking to rejuvenate a dry looking hide, but more recently I've been using Smith's Leather Balm, which is a 100% natural leather balm (cocoa butter, beeswax, almond oil) designed to protect and moisturize your leather goods to promote longevity. I'm not sure this will help your piece lay flat, but it may soften and relax the leather a bit. I sell a 1oz tin on my site www.legacybrandleather.com if you'd like to pick-up a can to try out. I hope this helps! Regards, -Ted

what's on the back? did you sew two pieces of leather together or felt on the back or something?

I want to join two leathers side by side, but I don't one of them to overlap the other. Is there a possible way how this can be achieved? Also I want it to be double sided. If anyone can respond, thanks.

Hello! Hmmm, I think I understand what you're asking. You could stitch the side by side pieces before adhering your backing piece. Or you could just use your backing piece as the support and holding those adjoining pieces together, use something like 3M Super77 adhesive to apply the top to bottom layers. I hope this helps!

Thanks for asking - This is a Circle Tool by WindFire Designs. They are traditionally used for kite design, but you will see many leather crafters with them since they are so useful. You can find them here: windfiredesigns.com/Tools/CircleTool/index.html

Thanks so much for your inquiry. Unfortunately, I don't have enough of this particular leather to make one, however I have other leather I could possibly use. Also, I no longer have a sewing machine, so if you still wanted it stitched there would me the additional hand-stitched labor cost. If you're still interested, email me at legacybrandleather@gmail.com so we can discuss further. Cheers!

I have a smaller section of this leather available, however I no longer have a sewing machine. The stitching would have to be done by hand, which will add up in the labor charges, unfortunately. If you are still interested, let me know and I can send some pricing your way.

Legacy Brand Leather it sounds like it might be out of my price range :( i looked up what a real leather mat would cost and they were pricier than I can afford right now. I’ll keep you in mind though should I ever get one. It’s beautiful!
