Making a Leather Checkbook Cover

In this video I'm crafting a simple leather checkbook cover. This is a custom order from someone who wanted to upgrade their checkbook cover, but I figured you might want to see my process and want to make your own.
Here I'm using Wicket & Craig's Medium Brown Harness leather 4-5oz thick.
For the thread I'm using Vinymo MBT #5 Brown Thread.

I am new in leatherworking, I am wondering why a lot of leatherworkers cut out a piece larger than what they need then cut out the shapes they need. Why not cut them directly from your hide to get more out of your hide?

I would prefer to cut it directly from the hide, but honestly in my mind I'm not losing much in the scheme of the whole hide. Just a preference since at times it's harder to trace and cut directly from the hide.

Is your thread waxed?

This Vinymo Thread does not come pre-waxed, which is my preference lately. I like to run the thread through some beeswax before I start stitching. I find the pre-waxed thread can look gummy, no matter how much I try to prep the thread before I stitch it. Thanks for asking! -Ted
