Making a frame lock folder (with Alec Steele Damascus) - Part 1 -

Finally starting on the frame lock folder with the damascus from Alec Steele! I'm pretty stoked to get going on this project and I'm quickly realizing that this is going to be a lot of learning👍

About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

Leave a chunk of the thick Damascus for the back spacer. Looks like you have enough length for it.

I was shocked when I saw how many trizact belts he ordered :0 Jeremy, I don't know what your doing to your belts, but I have made about 40 knives on a single a100 and a single a45 trizact belt, (obviously just polishing, not stock removal) and they're working just like on the first day. I know you make many more knives than I, but these belts will get you through the next 400-500 knives :):) The trick is to dress the belt with a diamond stone (just Hold it up to the running belt for 2 seconds) That will get all the debris that clogs up the belt out there, and even out the surface, getting all the nooks and crannies out of there. I hope I can help you getting more life out of these trizact belts, since they are hecka expensive

It would be quite the undertaking (especially for a novice blacksmith/bladesmith) to forge that billet down to a workable size. That being said, it will be a shame to grind it down to thickness and lose all that material when it could be forged down and lengthened to where you could get a couple folder blades out of that one billet. Perhaps a call or e-mail to Alec on how to best utilize as much of the billet as possible? Or maybe find someone to forge it down for you if you arent confident enough in your ability to do so? Good luck with the build either way though. Eager to see more.

So much good stuff going on in this video. Your beard’s back, you cleaned up the garage, you started working on the knife for Alec’s steel, and your beard’s back. Lol “It’s a wicked world we live in.” - A sad fact. Looks like you may need a bit more metal on the back end of the blade to make room for the stop-pin. This may means that the pivot will have to move, either on the handle, blade or a little on both. Looks good so far though.

You need a drafting tool called a circle template. good for accurate circles smaller than a compass will do.

  • @thomasarussellsr

Stephan Beck he had a circle jig hanging with his French-curves. The issue with using it is being 100% accurate with centering each circle on the same center. A compass is better for his application here.

Hey... just a little critique and maybe you're just not that to this point yet but won't you need a blade stop for the back of the blade to come up against when it's open? Also wanted to say I was touched to hear you tell your son you love him. Too many guys are embarrassed to show or express such a thing. Reminds me of my own dad - take that as a compliment - he's my hero. Though he likes all the 'manly' things and is about as masculine as they come, he's never been embarrassed to say he loves us or to hug his kids in public. I'll never forget the time I asked him if he could pick me up a few nuts and bolts while I was in school so I could fix something. Not only did he buy the items but he went ahead and made the repairs for me and left it on my bed with a note about how he was proud of me and that he loved me. Here it's 16 or 17 years later and that simple act still affects me. Anyway, that's just one example of the man who he is. Anyway just wanted to compliment you on that. Good job, man. One reason I follow you on KZread (beside the awesome content) is that you seem like a pretty decent guy. Good luck with the frame lock, take care and to quote you, "Cheers!"
