that spike forging rhythm is better than most music released today
I appreciate the way you go back and forth between long projects and short ones. Keeps things interesting.
As a musician, it is intensely satisfying when you sync your hammer blows with your music. Most channels don’t worry about rhythmic things like that. Thank you.
Do you know that WHEREVER one pauses your videos the freeze frame always looks like a fine arts photo. Your cinematography is superb, your color grading is outstanding ... and the sync to the music is the cherry on top. What a production you got there!

You probably wont see this, but I LOVE the music choice and timing in your videos, this one especially! well done, and keep up the good work. You inspired me to get into blacksmithing, so good on you!
Ever thought about forging up some medieval agricultural implements? Bill-hooks, sickles, scythes, broad axes, adzes? There's so many cool, edged implements that also need skill to make a lasting work tool. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this flail build (despite the noted historical inaccuracies).
remember to make the chain short enough that the ball wont reach your hand if it comes flying back at you. aint no one want a heavy ball with spikes on it embedded in their hand
it's so satisfying seeing all the forge scale brake away. I love it.
By far one of my favorite videos just from how amazing the editing is.
Remember to make the handle long enough, you should be able to hold it without the head of the flail touching your hand, as well they where made not to crush your own hand whenever you swing the thing

As a metal fabricator, I'm really glad to have found your channel recently. Really great work and entertaining videos!
Another great video. I really liked the part where the music was in the background and you could still here the hammer working. Wish you would use the music for the background like that more often instead of cutting out the sounds of the tools being used.
EPIC FLAIL EPIC WIN
Alec,I really enjoyed this style video...more of you talking explaining the steps also the noise of the tools and forging was awesome... Better than just music in the background in my opinion... Amazing as always

Hey Alec! I would really like it if you make some armour to test your arsenal on. I think many of your viewers, myself included, would love to see your flail smash into a shield, or some chain mail, or even a helmet or plate chest piece. Maybe you could do a collaboration with someone on it to learn about armour crafting. As always, i loved the video. Keep it up man!

@PeppoMusic

Hence they weren't very common or popular weapons, and very situational (mostly intended to hit around shields, that's it). The really long chains are ridiculous as well, and usually it really was just two rods attached by a very short chain, of 1 or no intermediary link at all. And they were almost always two handed as well. Making it a little safer. The ball-and-chain flails are more a fantasy thing, as they're clearly terrible weapons, they look cool though!

Also, this line is WAY too big/heavy. The size of a racquetball is better. This thing is about 6-6½ lbs of steel.

As a musician, I really appreciate the fact that you time the hammers to the beat of the music.
Alec, how much gas does your forge burn in about one our, and how expensive is it?? Because I want to build one myself, and i dont know if it would be cheaper than my coal forge that I am currently using.
@Squat5000
6 жыл бұрын
Freizeitflugsphäre depends on local prices. In my area we are at 2.25/gallon for liquid propane. It's not much cheaper, but being near a fire zone, it is infinitely safer because there are no beautiful Sparks. I use a hybrid of propane and coal in the crucible though... Incredible performance there.

He covered all this in an older video. He used to get that same question a lot when he was doing Live Blacksmithing too. I changed from a coal forge to a gas forge a long time ago and have never looked back - no maintenance, perfect temperature adjustment every time, much lower chance of burning steel, no smoke, no ash, but the down side is that it's very loud. At first I built my own, but it wore out in about a year. I bought one from NCTool and it's been running every weekend for several hours with each use and has been perfect for years. Gas (Propane or MAP) is sooo much better than wood/coal/anthracite. I'll never go back!
make a twisted dagger with twisted damascus
Loved the editing on this. That was lots of time spent on an effect, but it was very satisfying to watch. Keep up the great work, and your videos will continue to be just as memorable as the amazing work you produce in the shop.
Quite possibly the best music choice I’ve ever seen. You may be a good blacksmith but you are definitely one very talented filmmaker.
It would suck if you were to mess up and... _flail._
can you please find out how to properly handle a flail before you go medieval on some fruit. I really wanted to see you make one. i dont at all want to see you get hit with one
Absolutely incredible production work. The editing, the flow, the music. This is so satisfying to watch, keep up the great work to everyone involved

My god Alec... Your videos are so fun to watch! The fact that the hammer hits synch with the music consistently across all your videos satisfies my obsessive compulsion on a primal level. Keep being awesome man!
Yess, the rhythm with the hammering was fantastic! The music was great as well.
Dude, you’ve got to think more about the weight of these weapons. While I can’t know for sure, my strong suspicion is that almost every weapon you’ve made is at least half again the weight of the historical examples. And in the case of the recent mace more 3 or 4 times.
@ragingmoderate6791
6 жыл бұрын
OurCognitiveSurplus looked up reproduction flails and most fell into about the 5 to 5.5 pound range if his main ball is 4 pounds with everything else he should only be pushing about 6 pounds maybe 6.5 so really not that much more than reproductions based on historical evidence. Not sure about the mace but the ones I found were around 2 to 3 pounds. He hasn't ever said anything about the swords he's made as far as weight goes but unless he is making them way outside of historical specs in some way i.e. way longer or thicker then they probably aren't too far outside of what a historical piece would be. Most swords around 3.5 to 5 pounds and the claymore maybe 7 pounds for a large example.
Question Alec for the size of the flail handle by the look of the strapping you made you are making it for a longer handled flail but realistically the flails handle would only be like 12 to 14 inches in length. Just something for you to ponder upon
