    Fun Fact: According to Dave Canterberry, the reason smoking the hide waterproofs it is due to the particles of wood and carbon that are trapped within the fibers of the leather.

    If you still have this hat, I think it would be really cool to see a layer of buckskin, or some softer, thicker leather, sewn around the brim and glued/sewn into the head portion. :)

    I made my mould in a big container with potting soil and I used clay made out of flour and salt to get the actual form to hold. I can already see it's going to be a challenge to get the brim of the hat to stay flat. Anyway at least I have a use for the deer skins, I'll keep making them till I get one I like. Maybe this one. I will let you know how it turns out.

  • @Rambooutfitters

    @Rambooutfitters

    9 жыл бұрын

    Craig Ballantyne Very cool approach. You'll get it after you work out the do's and don'ts. Just be patient with a task like this and you will get something not to many people can say they made. I used flat rocks to flatten the brim while it dried. A little crinkle is ok. Gives the hat some character.

    So I'm in the process of attempting this. Made my own walnut solution and everything. About to put it in the hole but I need to run and get some more salt. My only worry is that I didn't make the hole deep enough. Guess I'll find out after I put it in and let it dry a bit

    Good stuff, thanks for sharing. I have a cold smoker I made for making summer sausage. It is basically a big wooden box with holes that is elevated & without a floor. I slide a grill underneath it and play with the ventilation so the smoke rises into the box but the heat doesn't usually get above 100F. I use this for smoking my hides; place a hide on the rack instead of fish/meat. This reduces the time I have to spend on this part of the process. Then again, who doesn't like to sit around a fire? Just thought I'd share in hopes of giving back. Loved your video; just finishing my authentic buckskins and was wondering what I'd do about a shade hat when I accidentally came across your video.

    So an update to all who care. I've been occasionally wearing my hat the last couple months. Honestly it's annoying. It seems like it's a bit too tight. I have to stretch it everytime before I wear it so it sits ok. If I bend over or do something while wearing it it falls right off. Tomorrow I'm going to try to steam it and stretch it..

I put the hide in a hard hat with wet dirt on the bottom (top inside of the hard hat) shaped like my top and it dried enough to keep its shape in 3 hours.
