    This was pretty cool to see! Interesting point about some notes being duplicated; I like heavy metal/hard rock music which frequently has the same note played repeatedly, often in the form of 16th notes or even triplets sometimes. So if one were to make a music box play a heavy metal song and they wanted it to sound right, duplicating notes may be absolutely essential!

  • @justinnaramor6050

    @justinnaramor6050

    What's wrong with the whole punch DIY music boxes? You said this is "way better", why do you feel that way? To me, it should be worth noting that a punch card/punch strip has obvious advantages over a cylinder: the length of your song is not limited by the size of the box, therefore your song could technically be endless. With a cylinder, a longer song requires a larger cylinder, which therefore requires a larger box to accommodate it. Also, punch cards move in a linear motion rather than a rotational motion, so you don't have to hear the song being repeated over and over again (one of the reasons some people might potentially dislike most music boxes). I suppose a disadvantage might be that the amount of paper that's already gone through the machine will end up sticking out, which could eventually lead to a tripping hazard if the strip of paper is long enough.

    Hey Eric this is amazing. I have been making music box songs with those paper music boxes kits for a few years. My dream is to be able to make a music box with replaceable cylinders of my own original music. I already have the music, what I don't have is any of the equipment featured in your vid. To your knowledge, would any of this be repeatable without the computer or lathe?

    Hey Eric, I would also love to make a custom music box myself, but I don't have the equipment that allows me to cut and craft with metal. So my idea was: 'Can I make the dots with a soldering iron as well?' I have bought a music box and I will carve off the dots from the cylinder. Now I wanted to use a soldering iron and a bit to Tin to add the dots onto the empty cylinder. Do you think that'll work out? Or do you have tips for me?

    I wouldn't rely on just solder. Apparently Reuge (the famous Swiss music box manufacturer) claims to coat their cylinders in a secret-composition resin. Since solder is lead-based, it is soft and would likely wear down over time, but possibly solder dots coated with CA glue would work?

    Hello, I'd like to include a 5~10s segment of your video in my future video (with the name of your channel and link to your video). @@EricThornton24 Thanks. I think your method can produce more solid cylinder (maybe the plastic would start to degrade if played many times) and slightly cleaner sound, but require more work and equipment. Re-weighting the teeth like you did is definitely something that would be necessary for many songs.
