It is complete! It's been one of those projects that has sat there waiting to happen but finally I can sit and work at my own desk. The timber was an old elm slab and the whole process of flattening can be seen in a separate video.

Hi Tim, I have to say that your work and level of finish is truly inspirational. Thank you
Proper lovely that Tim. Thank you. I watch a lot of Japanese furniture making and they'd be proud of this.
OMG! the glow on that desk is gorgeous. You took your time and it paid off. Love it. Now we need a tour of the rooms you have finished so we can enjoy the craftmanship you have put into it.
I immediately recognized the song as Daniel Gunnarson's "Nothing Feels Safe Anymore". Absolutely beautiful song.
I think that is quite possibly the most beautiful wood I have ever seen!
Seeing that grain pop really lifts the spirit. Thank you for sharing.
Beaut. You can learn so much from this channel. Helped massively when I was landscaping my garden 👍
That desk is absolutely gorgeous! Nice work, as usual!
Just love your vids ,,, Im always looking for the next one,,, Great content love the family bits with the kids makes it more family friendly to watch as well,,, keep up the good work, Best wishes
Fantastic look, I would imagine that you all couldn't be any happier. That grain is insane once you got a coat of the osmo on it.
Beautiful, you should be proud of your achievement, well done.
I literally winced at the phone when I saw the desk rising towards the monitor thinking it was about to obliterate it 😂 😂 didn't think it was going to stop! Smart thinking with taking the button out 👍

@Jose Jaiden Wow, you really don't have a life LOL
You did what I think to do, I had a mechanical desk but with just plywood, I wanted to make it smaller top and with wood - thanks for showing this!
A great Video - Tim. Love the big screen set up and the live edge desk. Beautiful piece of wood - You did it justice.
It looks stunning Tim. Your hard work has paid off once again
Ethereal music makes the surface look better!
That off cut at the end of the slab is the right shape for a pushing handle!
This desk is amazing, as well as all your projects
Oh my goodness Tim...that looks awesome...and I didn’t mind watching the painting...haha...very satisfying...thanks....🥰😘🇦🇺
What a beautiful piece of wood!
Very nice desk. Funnily enough we have been varnishing our camper today and use the same brushes.
Wow! Absolutely love it! 😍
Hi Tim, super job on the new desk. Sorry, i missed the 5 minutes of brushing as i was too busy looking at the slab! Gorgeous piece of wood and ready to start a new life. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work. 👍🖖😉🐶🦴🐔
That is a seriously beautiful slab of elm.... Great work.
Great video, and I love seeing your happy kids 'helping' you out 😁
Great work, exactly what I imagined and working on
That looks stunning , well done
Gread job cleaning up the live edge, I know how easy it is with a wire wheel but also know how they jump around and suddenly jump towards your hand. I used the right angle handle on my drill and taped the hoover nozzle to it so you can have better control of the drill and easy dust collection.
Beautiful, very well done sir!
Could have easily watched you finishing that Elm in real-time! Superb work Tim!

I’ll have to do a feature length uncut version for you purists! 😂
Stunning build mate, looks really nice and something I would definitely buy.
desk looks awesome
Hi Tim the desk looks amazing nice job on the finishing :)
Don’t apologise for the extended footage of oiling and polishing; could watch that for hours...it’s what attracts us to working with wood. Beautiful project. Well done!
Stunning, well worth the wait 👍
absolutely gorgeous desk. and really fits in well with the rest of the room. and my god, Tim, the patience you have to get that finish just "so" ! That's another thing I still need to work on lol

I did scuff it a bit on the way up the stairs, but strategically placed speakers were sufficient. 😂
Who knew watching paint dry could be so interesting 😜

What a beautifull piece of wood
Lovely piece of wood, lovely bloke!
Very good job Tim
Great project.
That's exactly the desk I want to build for the office. I thought it was fixed at the start but think I'll grab those legs, I know ikea do a similar one. Great job. I love the finish, I'd have probably went for an oil finish but I'll keep your suggestion in mind as it looks exceptional.

Thanks. It’s an oil of sorts but the main benefit is that it hardens like a wax so no risk of your paperwork getting oil patches for the week or two after. 😀
Stunning!!!
Probably one of your best ones yet. Well done.

Thanks. 👍
Desk turned out really great, good job. Amazing what oil adds to wood, especially osmo oil - which I don’t even think is just an oil. It’s almost like a thin varnish. Expensive but I do use it on the odd job

Yes this is the hard wax oil rather than just the top oil. 👍
That looks Great! and I like a bit of dado trunking 👍 😊
Love it - may do that!
Every time I watch one of these videos I realise there's another 10 tools I'm missing.
Awesome Job 👏👏👌🏻👍
Wow, it's amazing how the Osmo brings out the grain. Would love to make a dining table if I can find a large enough slab....

arutherz I’m planning on doing the same. I think I’ll end up butting two pieces together. It won’t be as nice as one huge piece but it might work.
That turned out grand. result of good planning and good planing lol . Quite expensive desk at end of the day in materials/time but fits into that rooms feel ideally . Few decades use in that desk I reckon ... Hope you enjoy it as much as the kids :-)
Definitely deserves a thumbs up, even if that display power cable is denying a perfect finish.
Wow! is the appropriate term for this beautiful desk (and for the screen too ;) )
It was like watching Osmo dry! No I'm joking it was a beautiful project, congrats. I think we should call you the 'Wood Whisperer' after this!
Excellent 🤩👍👌
"fitting some air con in the loft" video coming in the next few months?? . Excellent build, bloke at work was talking all about it lol... 👍
I know this is an old video but that turned out fantastic. 💯👍🏻👍🏻
I think the Osmo finished it perfect.
5 minutes of “Oddly Satisfying” 😬 ... big 🧠 on the up button 👊🏼
Brilliant
Gorgeous! A friendly suggestion: when you have parts of the video where the captions read [Music] you could add descriptions explaining what is happening on screen
ha brush all you want! Watching this is therapeutic
I’m so jealous
You have such good taste Tim, and great skills. How do you find time for a job !?
Lovely piece of wood and love the video, where did you get your screen from its brilliant.
I saw live in the title and thought we were in for a TRC live stream announcement!
Hi guys another really great video totally love your content... where can I get one of those screens?
That monitor is so high! Surely a crick in the neck after a days work!
@TheRestorationCouple

I’ve worked that way for 10 years. I have my laptop screen below. 👍
This was great! thank you! How much does the slab weigh? I'm thinking of getting something similar for my stand up desk, but slab weight could be an issue for the motorised desk legs
Congratulations at tugging at the heart strings - you have reached the golden 5% likes to view count ratio that this video deserves! (hardly any big channels get this on their videos) Top top camera and editing work on this one - you can tell you pulled the professional day job camera out for this one as opposed to the usual gopro. What a great piece of work that is! Please find a way to hide the monitor cable surely that is already smashing the little bit of OCD we all have inside! Thumbs up :)

Thanks. 🙏 Don’t worry, cable management is on the to do list this week. 👍
Lovely piece of wood, I would have used a low angle Jack plane to flatten it, glad to see you using my favourite finish OSMO and the same method, I then use a 0000 scouring pad to wipe of the excess I then add another coat and finish with a coat of Beeswax applied with 0000 wire wool and then buff it with a good old fashioned duster. Got to say I now have desk envy as mine is an IKEA desk. Love your screen could do with that for my role as an Assessor as I have to look at so many documents in an ePortfolio. I am a Sparky who's hobby is woodworking. Great Video, I am wondering if that slab would actually fit in my shed as it's only 10x8 in imperial

It’s a 2m desk so would just about get in there. 😀 I like to top osmo with a wax on some things but not on table tops, floors and worktops where I may want to add a new coat every now and then. 👍
Bloody marvellous Video brother!!! I would love to know where you got the slab of ELM FROM! Looks like I am going on the hunt for a loverly slab like you found.... Thank you for the effort in making this vid, its re kindled my lost and creative nature for this I thank you brother!! x
Stunningly beautiful. Loved watching the paintbrush. 👀 Would you consider threading the black cords through the wall?

Yes the permanent cables can but the rest will run down in a single white cable trunking. 👍
I happened to watch this with my Bose QC headphones on and had to comment on how much i liked the background music during the build phase. Can you tell me what widescreen monitor that is?
Any chance of a floor plan? As I'm struggling to grasp all of the add-ons. :)
Has anyone noticed the change of trousers. Anyway amazing video Tim
Great video, beauftiful table. How many coats of OSMO do you put on each side?
Beautiful build! I recently made a desk with similar legs, but went rustic with reclaimed scaffold boards - couldn't stretch the budget to a slab like that unfortunately!
Very well done buddy! Gorgeous top and I LOVE the adjusting base. I wonder if they do one with a tilt function so you could do an architect table? 🤔 How did you connect the table to the base? I bought a bunch of threaded inserts off of amazon and they’re awesome.

Just screwed with undersized screws to allow for a little movement. Not sure if they do a tilt but possible to make your own two part top and mount that I guess.
Hi, I would be interested in seeing your video editing setup, including equipment, storage, server setup.

Hi Tim, very nice and I'm very inspired by that. I've recently added two new desk tops to existing legs but I used laminate worktops, no need to say anything 😁😁. On a slightly different note do you mind me asking what editing software you use?
Beautiful desk! Do really like live edge furniture. I do not understand why people stain hardwood, just seems such a waste of the character of the wood. Did think, if people wanted to they could easily adapt your router jig to take a belt sander and use that with a 32 or 40 grit belt to do the flattening part if they don't have a router. And that would also prevent gouging at higher grits (something I've done with belt sanders before). Even if you made the legs you'd still have to by some strong linear actuators and build control circuitry, so I absolutely think you made the right choice in purchasing, plus if anything goes wrong you have 6 years of consumer protection with buying as a package (at least currently whilst EU consumer rights still apply).
Another cracking project done well! Funnily enough, I was looking to make my own desk for my partner to use when working from home. I have been looking at buying a router for ages, but I can't decide which size I need... I will be doing edging mainly, maybe some slots for shelves when I make my bookcase... Do you think a palm router will be up to heavier stuff/controllable enough? Would a big one be a bit too unwieldy and, again, hard to control on the smaller stuff? TIA! Karl
@TheRestorationCouple
4 жыл бұрын
1/4 palm router most likely fine. I use it for most stuff now rather than the big one.
Cable management!!!
You made me laugh. No, not 5 minutes watching a paintbrush. It was 5 minutes of watching the creation of a masterpiece.
Is there a particular advantage to using those Japanese style saws? I have one that I bought to have a go with. I find them harder to use than 'western' style saws (doubtless due to lack of practice) but can't see any obvious advantages.
Nice! How big of a top did you make it to? Do you find the two-leg desk wobbles?
Great video, what monitor did you mount on the wall for your editing?
Excellent work. Did you screw the frame to the desk? Also, how far is a leg to the edge?
Brilliant work, that elm looks amazing. Sweet ultrawide BTW, how do you find the VA panel for editing?

I’m actually yet to calibrate that screen but it’s pretty good. I’m no screen expert but nice contrast and nice that it acts as the dock for 80% of things so less cables. Still use my MBP for final checks of photos as it’s just what I’m used to and has correct profiles.
Hi Tim, what if the kids move the speakers under the screen and then raise the desk? Great video, lovely desk btw.

Crunch I guess. 😂
Feedback/Advice - You sand like a drunk guy stumbling home. There is a technique to sanding. Work out a pattern with the grain that you will follow repeat over and over again. If a particular spot needs to be done, you'll need to do the whole lot until that spot comes down to being good. Potentially think about sanding like you would paint with multiple 'coats'. If things are taking too long, you'll need a more coarse gain. With a slab like this, I would suggest you find someone with a drum sander to do the bulk of the flattening and imperfections with a 40 or 60 grit. Most cabinet makers are happy for you to do this for you for a fee. Hope it helps you next time you sand.
Which legs did you go for? The ones on the link in the description are not electric as shown in the video. Great project and going to attempt one myself.
Where can I find a piece of wood like this? What should I be googling
I didn't realise you were a photographer! Thought this was your full time job (I wouldn't have time for anything else). What do you photograph?
Lovely finish. Is that two coats of osmo? About to sand and wax some old ceiling beams that have been plastered over for decades. Need to rewatch your osmo vids.

Two on the bottom three on top. Went with thinner coats as gets less abuse than kitchen worktops. 👍
What did you fill the knots with and where did you buy it please? Was it some sort of two part glue / resin? Love the vids thanks.

Just a two part epoxy. I mixed the first layer with some sawdust but then topped up with clear as it settled a bit.
No, no... that was five minutes watching beautiful wood grain!
How many tools do you have...?
The polyx painting porn was amazing, my jaw dropped when it hit the desk top. Amazing color and glow up! What was your process for coating?
