Making a custom knife in M390 Steel and Carbon Fiber by Bulgarian knife maker - Silverman
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This video is made in the workshop of Bulgarian knife maker Stoil Manchev - well known here in Bulgaria like "Silverman".
During the two days project I spent more than 10 hours with the knife maker and I filmed parts of his work on this beautiful knife - "Model 1" in Carbon Fiber and M390 Steel.
The knife is special Carbon Fiber edition to the basic "Model 1" in M390 or K110 steel with green micarta.
Overall length - 20.5 cm
Blade length - 10.5 cm
Blade thickness - 4.5 mm
The M390 steel blade is heat treated to 62 Hrc at 1075 C in stainless foil and have a cryo in liquid nitrogen.
M390 composition:
Carbon 1.90%
Chromium 20.00%
Vanadium 4.00%
Molybdenum 1.00%
Silicon .70%
Tungsten .60%
Manganese .30%
The hollow grind was made on a 20 inch wheel - during the video you will see the thickness of the blade behind the cutting edge.
The abrasive belts for grinding and finishing the blade are:
- ceramic - 36 grit
- cubitron-II 60 grit
- ceramic - 120 grit
- trizact gator - A65
- scotch brite - medium
Final sharpening on diamond rotation wheels.
The knife is skeletonized full tang with SS corby bolts and SS lanyard tube.
The prices starts from 150$ to 350$ (depending the steel choice and handle material + leather sheath) with free shipping to EU or USA

I adore Beethovens 9th symphony and I ❤️ the knives you create. 👏 edit: OMG while researching channel I found that Stefan Wolf passed away from Covid in 2020. Rip sir, you will be missed.
Fantastic work and amazingly clean work shop! That 20" wheel is huge, I've never seen anyone use a wheel that large!

Now that is one good looking knife. Liking it very much.
I have never seen such a HUGE hollow grinding wheel. That is a very slight hollow grind that probably cuts like a lazer
knife making and classical music. a very zen moment i think.
Eugene, this is one of the best Bulgarian knife makers. His knives are marvelous, I hope someday I can afford one. If you want I can give you a link to a forum page with photos of his works.

nice one thanks for shearing lovely knife
the mother of all contact wheels.
beautiful
wow you're very good and your knife is beautiful.
nice knife. look smart with staghorn scales. each to their own.
Beautiful knife and a fantastic video. I'm very impressed with your steady hand while grinding. The knife sharpening system you have made is incredible too, you should put it into production. There's a gap in market for a powered sharpener for knifes with an angle guide
outstanding, love that wheel must get one of them.
one word describes this or these blades SWEET .. grind line came out better than I thought very nice knife .. this make may be the next R W Loveless ..
Wow! I totally have belt grinder envy now.
You are very very good at your knife making skills. Here is just a tip for another way to attach scales to tangs: NO PINS--- by grinding 3mm. rectangle cuts in each side of tang(3 to 5 of them)----then route 2 to 3mm. deep channels matching the corresponding cuts in the tang so you can wrap a single 3K Carbon-Fiber strand removed from a short of cloth maybe a little less than 3 meters long around scales and tang. I do it by wrapping Gorilla Duct tape around the tip of the blade and as far astern on the tang------when wrapping the duct tape you use "Jump Stretch Bands" they are rated at 10 pound pull when stretched a bit more than 2 meters, but have a 6 to 7 pound lighter pull pulled out to a meter &3/4----- so these bands are suspending your knife once they are attached to your bench----- use supper glue to start that meter&1/2 3K strand of carbon-fiber to your scales----spin your blade 15 to 20 times and use a heavy wrench loosely fit to your blade(your blade doesn't spin till you take off the wrench(must have a hand on bands on one end or part of the blade{gloves!} to start the feeding of that Carbon-Fiber into the groove-channel) to control how fast the Epoxy resin tub with the length of Carb-Fibr goes around your scales and blade. Your scales and blade WILL NEVER COME LOOSE no matter what abuse+++ the SHOW appearance is stunning+++NO DRILLING to weaken temper----end result is Beautiful.
Hermoso trabajo!
Great video!

Thank you very much. Have a nice day.
I have always appreciated ancient swords and beautiful knifes..
Excellent production showing all of your processes. Thanks for sharing. Quite obviously, money for equipment is no object of concern. Wow, what fantastic machinery! I thought it rather humorous that a craftsman of your skill worked all of the processes "Free Style" yet you finished the sharpening process with a jig! :-)

Rockin the big wheel.
nice! and it sounds like a knife opera. :)
Благодаря!
Good working
Stefan, I really appreciated the time spent filming such an awesome knife maker and your willingness to share that experience with us. I'm drooling over the belt grinder and was frustrated that I couldn't find it online. Custom is nice and I am an envious hobbyist! Just a couple constructive hints if you'll allow me. Actually, now that I'm seeing this video is more than a year old, maybe you've already figured it out and if you have, please forgive. Listening to the grinding would have been nice. How much pressure was he putting on the blade as he held it to the belt? The sound gives us a clue and even though you did mix in the sounds of the knife maker, I had to mute most of the video because of the music. It's was great that the video wasn't accompanied by some version of "Extreme Death Metal because I'm doing something extreme and I want to be in your face about it," but because I'm an uncultured Yank, the Wagner (or whomever that was) was killing me! It started off so nice...until the singing. I'm sure that has to be the best part, but it's very jarring to ears that are unaccustomed to such things. Just saying. Maybe a little Haggard or something? Just kidding about the Haggard, but instrumentals are great in such situations. Having said all that, the silly reason I started this whole diatribe was your abuse of the fade-in and fade-out that you somewhat assaulted our eyes and brains with. Short, 2 second cut-scenes with fading-in and out in between each one is very distracting and you gave us no time to re-focus attention to the wonderful stills you got of the knife in various stages of completion. From what I could tell, you spent some time setting up the knife and camera for each of the stills making sure the light was hitting it just right and it was well framed in the camera. Pity we didn't get to have more time with the stills. It was great to see Silverman's bench and some of his tools and I learned a little about how to properly bring the blade to the belt with this one, so thank you.
30 min video no heat treatment , by the way great job
Great idea that home-made constant angle sharpener you use at about min. 26!
Nice knife
I dream of a shop like yours. $320 is not enough for the amount of work and quality of steel. You got to pay those bills and some new belts........
Прекрасен нож наистина!
Thank you. Hope to hear from you soon!!
Super
Great soundtrack.
