Making a custom dimple pick. Part one - Just the tip
Inspired by entering @terrybpickin9941 pick design competition I got back to making some dimple picks. I raised the question some time ago that while many people seemed to make custom pin tumbler picks there didn't seem many people making custom dimple picks with nice wooden handles so decided to have a go and bought myself a mini lathe and some files. since then I have started these KZread videos so thought I would document the process that I have learned while teaching myself wood turning and metal work.

Amazing craftsmanship, I cant wait for part 2!!! What a gift you have for making picks.

Good Job 👏👍
Brilliant work. I too loved metalwork and woodwork at school in the 1970's. Made a scroll coffee table in metalwork and a chessboard square table in woodwork. Still going strong in 2024. Wow 50 years of use. Congratulations on your masterpiece ❤

Thanks for that, I actually failed both metal and woodwork at school, it's just goes to show that if it's something that interests you enough that you can actually get better, only took me 40 years to find this out. Thanks for watching

Nice picks there! I my self, kind of like to modify those huge Chinese picks to fit smaller keyways and have the ability to set the pins that hide between the wardings. Also the shaft needs to be rounded down and made smooth so it can travel more smoothly in the keyway from pin to pin. I do all this while trying to pick a lock, so this way at least I can open one lock with said flag. I just basically keep modifying the flag until I can pick the lock with it. 😂
Great video mate. I love that you make the best of the tools you have available. The results are absolutely stunning! 😍 I'll be watching part 2 after my tea 😎👍🏻

Thanks Dmac, your pick building video is a big part of the inspiration to have a go along with the encouragement and feedback on the forum. They are miles simpler than a flat pick and still very simplistic but I will keep going until I get something a bit more special

It took so little to snap so better now than when set in a handle. Maybe I should stress them a bit before glueing them in as that really is too late
Uh, what a great video!! I am super glad your 100 subs giveaway pointed me to your channel! Thanks for sharing videos like this! Great work without power tools! I love to see that stuff like this is possible. Amazing how your flag turned out in the end! Great sportsmanship how you reacted to the broken flag 👏👏👏 I am going to be catching up on your videos one by one 😅👍

What a great idea! Just ordered some ejector pins too. 1.5mm was the smallest I could get. I guess 20 pieces are enough to create all the profiles that I need 😅

You will need to thin them down, I take most of the top and then oval it afterwards, it takes a long time. I do have some 1mm I am going to experiment with soon. Best of luck with making. What will you do for a handle?

They are easy to Google, easier than describing. I use 1.5mm ones and thin the shaft. Can get them online easy
🤔 hmm i need to figure out what handle I should make to house the "full tang" dimple flag

Have you made some flags?
@wolfganggrojcig2528

@@NIGBEE-lock-bothering not yet, i got the injector pins and some tools on the way. I guess getting the flags done will only take time. I have a high powered dremel tool and cutting discs as well as polish barrels, carbide burr/rotary cutter heads and drill bits, but my planning stops at the point where I need to create a stable handle for the (hopefully soon to be) flag pick. I need to think about a couple of ways to secure the resulting flag in a handle
Alright, i received my ejector pins with the 1.5mm wide shaft. The 65mm head needs to be turned into a flag. I was thinking maybe there's a way to cut most of the material instead of filing and only start filing once 60% of the flag shape is achieved through cutting. I wonder if a dremel can cut into these.

A bench grinder is better if you have one, remember to quench every 2 seconds or more if you do this way. It takes me about 50 file strokes to completely remove one side of the head so it's not that long if doing it by hand. Good luck, hope to see the results
@wolfganggrojcig2528

you might be right 😅 I just tried grinding it with a large hand file that I got from Amazon. Easy job! Hmmm, guess i'll use the dremel to polish the pick, once it is done. My only buyers remorse is, that I went for the 100mm long 1.5mm wide shaft instead of the 150mm long and 2mm wide shaft. 10 centimeters for a full tang pick is just not long enough for me, but we will see. This can change, once I'm ready to test the pick.
@NIGBEE-lock-bothering

@@wolfganggrojcig2528 2mm would be way too to thick, you will need to slim down the 1.5mm ones some as well. Plus it would be really hard to drill a full Length hole for it. Don't know what you had planned for the handle
@wolfganggrojcig2528
8 күн бұрын
@@NIGBEE-lock-bothering yeah, I have no plans for the handles yet. I'm thinking 3D printed handles, but not sure how that will work. It will probably be hard to design and manufacture a handle that takes full advantage of the 10cm long pick, stays in place and provides good feedback.

Ты очень меня выручил ! Спосибо большое
I admire your patience to use files, but OMG you are working way too hard. Start with 1.4mm and 1.3mm ejector pins with 6mm heads, wire 100mm long. Use a bench grinder for making the most of the flag. Rotate the pin between your fingers to produce the flag width to 0.100". Quench every two seconds in water. Shape the final flag thickness with a cut-off disc and Dremel tool. Shape the square sides round with the cut-off disc as well. 1.5mm is way too thick.
@NIGBEE-lock-bothering

Thanks, yes the 1.5mm is too thick and produces the hardest part of me making the flag, thinning it down to an oval. I have not found anything in-between 1.0 and 1.5 for ejector pins, I have bought some 1.0 to have an experiment with but they feel really flexible in the pack (not had chance to try them yet) because of my fixing method for the handle the 1.5 becomes an advantage.
That turned out well nigbee, good job, I don’t particularly like metal work, but I’m afraid a wooden pick just won’t cut the mustard.
