Making a Crocodile Leather Key Fob Case (Free PDF Pattern)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The next level in luxury for your key fob...
In this video I wet mold crocodile leather to make a key fob case. I used the standard crocodile scale pattern to form the front and two rows of crocodile bones to form the back of the case. Also included is a lining made from vegetable tanned kangaroo leather which will help the case keep its shape.
Materials Used:
- Crocodile leather
- Vegetable tanned kangaroo leather
- WUTA polyester thread thread 0.45mm
- Edge paint
- Paraffin wax
- Leathercraft cement
- Contact cement
- Solid brass key ring
- Solid brass chicago screw
- WUTA Steel spring clips s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_ASTFOa

You are the only person that burnish wax over acrylic paint. I tried that and got good result as it repels water!

Great. Another way is to use resolene as a top coat but I think that wax gives a nicer finish.

The only ONLY thing I would suggest would be to stitch OVER once more so that the thread is showing (doubled) so as to help strengthen the fob where it would be pulled apart the most..other than that..PERFECTION!

Thanks! I did back stitch on the first stitch but laid the second stitch over the top so it doesn't really show. You can do this with polyester threads but with linen thread your only option is to lay back stitches side by side.

Very nice! What kind of material did you use for the molding the outline of the key fob? Is it thick hard paper?

Thanks! It is two layers of thick paper, just thick enough to make the pattern rigid. Plastic would make a better mold if you want to reuse it.

Hi Teran, Have a doubt. If I would like to shape the key since it got some relief, Should I have to skive the upper piece to get something thinner?? AMAZING WORK BY THE WAY!🙏🏼

Thanks! It would depend on the starting leather thickness, for best results use a single layer of veg tan around 1.5mm. Also when wet molding you should spend extra attention molding that relief area and use a bone folder to trace out any details when it is wet and then again when it is dry.

For this project I used a 0.45mm polyester thread from WUTA. It comes already waxed so I did not need to add any extra.

Thanks! They are spring clips I got them from WUTA, I left a link for them in the video description. I find them better for wet molding than normal binder clips.

Will this work with chrome tan leather ?

  • @TeranAtelier

Not very well. Chrome tan leather will still be very floppy after wet molding and won't hold its shape. I recommend at least one layer vegetable tan so it becomes firm.

You can start by using a scanner or tracing to get the profile and then offset the profile by around 1-2mm to allow room for the leather.

This blue crocodile was a small off-cut piece that I was lucky to find. I think it was around USD 30.
