Making a chef style knife part 2: Blending the grind

Set aside a few hours for this part of the process. It takes a while to do all the work by hand but the results are worth the effort!

Dude. I've been making knives for 12 years now, and your vids are some of the best refresher tutorials I've come across. Good Job.

Great tutorial. I have been wondering how to this exact stuff for some time now as a beginner in knifemaking and this was eye-opening. Thank you so much! Subbed.

THANKS! Very timely because I'm working on some chef's knives for my sisters right now, and on the first one I ground it flat to the spine on the belt sander and decided never to try that again! I've got bevels on the second one and wasn't sure what to do next. I wanted to blend it but wasn't really sure how to proceed. NOW I KNOW!!!

Great vid, Mike. I've been making chef knives with a convex bevel, just because I don't have the skill to do what you just showed. I'm working on one now. I think I'll go back and attempt to follow your instructions, and thin the blade more into a flat grind. Hopefully I can apply your technique with at least some degree of improvement. Thanks again. Forrest

Well done sir. I'm bummed to see how few views you get on your videos. You're just as informative as the guys getting half a million+ views, and I really like your down-to-earth presentation. I only started making knives a couple months ago, and watching channels like yours is very inspiring to get out to the shop and practice.

Great video....you can achieve excellent results if you're willing to put in the time. I've never been able to pull off a perfect grind straight off the grinder so for me hand sanding is a necessity.

Thanks for the info. Do you have or use a knife vise for finishing? A standard vise work great for some things but when I work on knife handles, there is nothing like a good knife vise.

What size and type of steel did you start with? Are you heat treating with steel foil? What degree bevel did you grind into the steel with the machine before you did the hand sanding?

+Joseph Rector Lol just take your time with it and when in doubt do it by hand for maximum control. You'd be surprised at how good you can make your blades look with some hand work.

+EKIM1428 I always end up with waves in the middle of my bevel, the grind line ain't to bad, but you can see multiple waves (lack of a better word) in the bevel, hard to feel if at all easy to see, still I wonder considering it my second set of bevels it it kicks my first one ass..
