Great video. Clearly you put in a lot of effort. Very informative aimed at the average diyer. I was thinking of takling a more complex tent called the Spring Bow tent. They are not available in South Africa. But might start with a Baker style tent like this first. Anyway, I really appreciate you sharing your project. Regards from sunny South Africa 🇿🇦
That’s a beautiful job on my favorite style of tent, Jen. It looks amazing. I also really appreciated the way you presented the video, sort of a follow along tutorial of sorts, so any of the rest of us could give it a try if we so choose. Thanks for that, Professor Baker Jen.. (Lol!)

I am. I'm enjoying it so much. Thanks for watching :)
I am planning to put windows in a wall tent, but I do not want to cut the top of the window out so rain will slide down the flap from the wall area above the window. I think I will add a piece of material in side to the wall at the top of the window to sew the screen to. Velcro thick clear vinyl window panels under the storm flap is planned as well. I want to use the storm flaps as awnings so windows can be open during a gentle rain.
Nice 👍🏾

Thank you so much for doing this. I’ve just started mine, but I’m using a manual singer. Mad but I’m trying a retro way for retro tent. And I’ve never sewed before 🤪
I am currently working on designing and building a canvas tent for my boat and this has been a massive help for someone like me who hasn't done much sewing or working with these fabrics. Thanks very much for taking the time to make the video.

nice work. i am building a tent right now and i have never sewed before i am so nervouse excited and i am scared to fail but i am going to take my time. this video really helped me thanks.
Very nice video and instructions ! Next time ! Ha-ha ! Obtain (or make) the punch for the grommet openings. Whatever it's cost, it would be worth it . It would de nice to have a "Baker" as a deer hunting camp. It would offer options as well have sufficient space to hang and dry we clothing at the end of the day. Nice job !
Great Job !!!!!!

I have been thinking about making a canvas wall tent with a welders blanket roof and your scale model idea helped quite a bit. I'm also thinking about mocking up and maybe hand stitching because of wanting to make sure I fit around the frame properly. I was also considering using fiberglass resin to harden it once setup is complete to make it act like a permanent structure.
@johnbobbitt6470
Жыл бұрын
Did you ever give your fiberglass resin project a go? Was thinking along similar lines...but weight was a concern. And you know that once ypu add resin, itll have to come down for some damn reason. My workaround, so far, is to complete the canvas, then hang the tent. Then dissolve several tubes of 100% silicone caulk in Naptha, or other spirits. Then spray on with a pump sprayer and saturate. Maybe twice. Then seal the seams well. Thought? ps- youll wish you left the roof as transparent as possible. Trust me
Wow! What an amazing project! Very well done. I hope to see this in action. Great video as well. Nice touch with the Blue Jay. If you don't mind me saying, you are a beautiful woman and very graceful. I hope you are able to get out and use this. Take care. :)

Thank you for doing this tutorial! I’m about to do my first tent project and I definitely needed to see this. I checked out JT’s Outdoor Fabrics and you were not kidding about their inventory! I’m definitely going to be ordering from them. I was curious if you had thought about using zippers instead for the door?
awesome tnx

Oh my gosh, that was a Hurculean project. Such a beautiful hot tent. You should feel very proud. How heavy is the whole tent? Way to go. 💖💖💖😺
@TheWildYam
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was a huge job. So glad it is over. 9 pounds and then an extra 14 pounds for the wings, fly and doors. A few extra for poles.
I really regret not having taken some 40ft trailer sheets from my old work before it shut.
impressive
@TheWildYam
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is quite the tent.
A question, and a suggestion: Wouldn't it be better to use a cotton-wrapped polyester thread for sewing? That way, the cotton wrap would swell when it got wet, and seal up the needle holes, making the seams even MORE water-resistant? The suggestion: instead of hand-cutting every grommet/snap hole, use a leather punching tool, which is designed to go through heavy material. Even if you don't have a tube big enough to punch the entire hole at one time, you can still use it to sort of "nibble" each hole until it's wide enough for the grommet to fit through. I've used the pliers-like tool, with several sizes of tube, to punch through 9 ounce leather, which is fairly thick. It should be able to go through four or five thicknesses of canvas without much trouble
Good
What a lot of work,,but well worth it,,got me thinking,what did the project cost,,great vid.

Welcome. Greetings from Canada!
Lots of work but great job. Been wanting to make one myself. You done a fantastic job. Anything you would change now if you did it again.?
Wonderful tent..a huge job! Would you mind sharing the approx. total cost?
Thank you for making this video! As I dealve into a similar project your tips are so helpful. When measuring, how much room did you leave for the shrinkage of the canvas, online I read anywhere from 2-15% 😳
Just came across the video and you did a really nice job on the build. My only concern would be the stove pipe coming out the front by your door. Was there a reason why you went out the door side as opposed to the side wall or even straight up. I have a canvas hot tent and I love it but takes two for effective set up. Planning on a baker tent build and didnt think of adding the stove until I saw your video. Really nice work...
A fantastic job! The baker tent is a great style and making it yourself with a stove and "no see um" screening and enclosing it for cold weather makes it even better. Will your canvas waterproofing include any type of fungicide or mold resistance? - maybe the canvas has already been treated? If I remember correctly the somewhat smaller heavyweight canvas "baker" type tents we used in the 1960s as teenagers in the Scouts had serious mold discoloration no matter how much we tried to store them dry. Not having a large enough place to let them dry completely all at one time didn't help either.
@TheWildYam
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The sunforger fabric is already treated and I also used another spray on the untreated fabric.
I do have 4 of them from BC forest service 1940 if you have two face to face and and have the stove in the middle and for bedding and one for normal used
Would live the pattern
Had to take a minute to say A+...been thinking of building one and am so happy i found your video...very thorough!!! Thanks for this...also, what did you choose for waterproofing?
How many linear yards did you have to order and how much does the tent weigh? Thanks, i love your channel
Awesome Video Ms can you teach us about how to select a water proof fabric for Tents I am from Pakistan and Big found of Camping in Wild and desert
Great video. I really appreciate it! I want to build one to live in. Can you please tell me how much all of these materials cost you if you have time?
Will you be posting a video on the mosquito netting wall you were talking about? I'm considering building a similar tent but I don't have any experience working with netting. Thanks!
❤
I enjoyed this helpful video. I hope you are still around to reply to my question. Can canvas be sewn with a standard “home” sewing machine?
It’s incredible. I have a question though...what is it that makes you sleep in a tent in the middle of the woods since you already have a cabin (more comfortable) in the middle of the woods??? The nature is still surrounding you...maybe you want to FEEL more in the arms of mother nature? I am impressed by your « wild » side :-)
@TheWildYam
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I want to feel more connected. The cabin is so insulated, I hear nothing of the noises of the woods.
Is there no need for heat fabric behind and along side of stove ? My Russian Bear Tent (UP-2 Tent) from Siberia Russia has that same fabric that is around chimney , on the tent wall. Just as a precaution. Tent looks great 👍 , look forward to hot tent videos to come.

You'll see what I do in the video tomorrow.
I think even in a moderate snow storm this tent might fail. I would bring extra poles.
bad ass
Hi Thanks for the video. I have thinking about making a Baker tent for a long time. Can you tell me the cost of this project? Say without the fly?
