I’m trying to make one for a customer from my shop, do you use ceramic clay and a food grade glaze? I’m so lost in making one but I’m trying to learn 😭, I hate saying no to customers

Yes! I use cone 6 stoneware clay and cone 5/6 food safe glaze. If you’re new to pottery, you will need access to a kiln (maybe if you have a local paint your own pottery store they could fire it for you), and you don’t have to make it on the pottery wheel. You can hand build it! ☺️

I've watched a couple of your clay bong videos, pretty cool stuff! I suppose that there is a tube going down that's not made of clay, right? This part is not entirely clear to me.

Thank you so much! Yes I size the opening so that it will fit either a glass or silicone down stem once it’s finished 😊 I did make one bong with a built in down stem but it makes it a bit trickier to clean, so a removable one seems best.

@@theclaycollective this makes a lot of sense, thank you! I'm thinking of doing a removable clay pipe then. It could be fitted with a wet lump of clay instead of silicone, so that it's even more absurdly sustainable.

@@crabofchaos7881 sounds like a great idea!! Once you get the shrinkage of your clay exact, you can make them pretty seamless! Little rubber o-rings from the hardware store are great too for making things air tight if the stem fits a little loose in the hole!

Do you mind sharing what size the hole cutter is? Do you know the shrinkage of your claybody? I was wondering because I also want to make one to use with the silicone down stem. Thanks!

For sure! I use a 7/8” hole punch for the hole and making the “tube”. My red clay shrinks at 15.5%. The hole punch has worked well for me with other clays with different shrinkages too, but I also buy little rubber O-rings from the hardware store and slip it around the silicone down stem. That way it has a snug but flexible fit even if there’s slight variation in the finished hole size 😊

Hey I’ve read your tips on how to size your down stem! for a 14mm down stem with 11.37% shrinkage it looks like the original size needs to be about 3/5”, but I’m having a hard time finding a clay punch of that diameter. Do you have any other suggestions?
@theclaycollective

Hmm, maybe you can find some piping at a hardware store at that size? Or possibly use a compass to carve the hole diameter and then manually cut it out?

I get them on Amazon! You can buy glass ones, but I like the silicone ones since they’re a bit more forgiving if your shrinkage calculation ends up being a little off 😊
