I did something similar to my old Delta 6" benchtop years ago that I found in ShopNotes. I used 1/8" aluminum angle stock for the braces and it has worked out well. I'd love a much larger jointer, but don't have room in the shop. I can attach the wings in a couple of minutes when I need to joint longer than around 3 ft and everything stores away when not in use. Really nice work. To eliminate the flex at the end of the extended outfeed, you could add a brace from the underneath towards the end of the outfeed back to the top edge of the stand. If you don't want it to be clunky, this could be a metal rod - and with that you could make it threaded rod and adjustable as to length, also.

Great stuff, great work! I have a 6" with fairly long infeed and outfeed tables, but it's the 3-knife cutter head. This is an excellent modification to add another option when looking to upgrade to a helical head or getting an affordable jointer in the shop and definitely "making it more better". My 6" takes two people to move it anything more than one foot. Great video.

Nice job on the stand and extensions Jodee! I had no idea jet made a small jointer like that. Pricey, but it looks to fill a niche of a quality machine in a small shop. I know I've said it before, but that design you used is my favorite for shop furniture. Quick and simple to build, very sturdy.

Watching your hands get as close to the table saw blade as you were had me holding my breath. I got the ends of two fingers mangled last year, so now I am very cautious.

We'd all like a bigger jointer, as the one we own is never large enough. ;) This is a nice idea and I may try to build these for my vintage late 60s Rockwell 4". Yah, 4"... it was free, in great shape and came from my dad. Built like a tank, like most vintage power tools. I made a mobile stand with some on-sale shop stand parts (from Rockler), two laminated 3/4" plywood top pieces and compartments below... one open for the motor, one enclosed to catch the chips for hookup to my dust separator.

Great stand. Would you do a video on why you picked this particular jointer. I like Jet, I have an 1840 lathe. but a $1000 for this seems a little steep. I like the helical head and the cast iron fence but still. I look forward to watching your videos. You take a different approach to woodworking which is becoming rare these days. Great idea and a polished look. Since you're not supposed to put too much pressure on the outfeed, I'd say a little flex isn't that big of a deal. Maybe the infeed can be stiffened up a little and you'd be good to go.

I took the hard road and mill the table edges to 90 degree ....

Might I suggest.... Increasing the height of your extension side pieces to make a larger truss will greatly reduce defection in the top. The face surface area of the side trusses that butts up against the jointers housing will then increase rigidity and eliminate bending moment and deflection topside.

I think that's a pretty good improvement ... I wouldn't worry about a tiny bit of flex. The extensions really just help you manage longer boards. As long as you keep the greatest pressure on the cast iron, the extensions shouldn't really affect anything as long as they're straight, coplanar and flush. Still wouldn't trade you for my 8in jointer though. lol

So long as you bear down on the cast iron part, the in/out feed flexing should be manageable. As they say, don't let perfection be the enemy of good.

Nice! Two suggestions: Put a brace from about the middle of the infeed and outfeed extensions back to the stand, that might reduce the flex, assuming the clamps that hold the jointer to the stand are stiff enough. Second, replace those 3/8" bolts with some black 3/8" flanged button head screws to make it look really clean :) Something like a McMaster-Carr p/n 91355A193, assuming 2" is long enough.

Nice I have the 8 inch wahula jointer it has the extension bars. But D*** are they hard to get level with table. Good idea like to see channels show solutions most of us common woodworker face yes floor model one day but I want a bandsaw first. Thanks

Just bought this same jointer a couple weeks back, and would be interested to know how your tables are holding up after a couple months. Want to try the same, but nervous about drilling into the existing tables if it turns out to be a bad idea. Any updates?

That should work just fine, even if the end of the outfeed has some flex it shouldnt matter because you shouldnt be pushing in that area anyway. If youre jointing a 12' long board, maybe it would matter a bit.

Very cool. Why not add a diagonal support from the cabinet bottom to prop the extensions. I would imagine there would not be any flex possible?

Would it have been just as possible to cut those table saw rabbets(I think those were rabbets?) on the jointer itself? Just moving jointer fence inward to meet the same cut width as what you did on the table saw, and taking a series jointer passes until you reach your depth of cut I will say that short clip of you doing the table saw cut made me very anxious for your digits. All in all though, great idea! I definitely will think about trying this out on my 6" wen jointer

How is the modification holding up a year later?

I watched your Jet jointer. I want to do your Infeed and out feed addition. I never hesate to ask. Do you have a cut list for your project? Right now I have trouble thinking. No I am not cutting corners. I got run over by a drunk driver when I was in my wheelchair. Yes I got hurt. So if you have any additional intel it sure would help me out. Good Day… I sent you a comment earlier about your Jet 6” jointer bed extension project. I now have bought one and I am making slow progress on doing my in/out feed tables. Time wise it’s everything X 2. The screws that you used? Do you offhand know or remember the name of those screws? I believe I have some but I cant find them. When I go into Ace/HD/ Lowes trying to describe them… I leave everyone frustrated and I leave empty handed. I believe this is what my deck guys used on my Ipe deck. @Timber2Toothpicks It might be these screws that you are talking about. (spax.us/products/t-star-plus-trim-head-mdf-hardwood) These are the ones that I used to join the wing braces to the wing tables. Hopefully that's what you were after. I think I got them at Lowe's.

I have the same unit. One day after some unusual loud noise, I realized the cutter heads are no longer level with the out feed table. The out feed table is not adjustable and the cutter head is not adjustable as well. Checked inside, the bolts are tight, belts good tension. I don't recommend this unit.

I have been wondering the people who make a chop saw station. Why not make it modular? A way to drop any too you may need with longer in and out feed. I know it might take longer for set ups But if (like most of us with tiny garage shops) it could help make a space more useful. more accurately, it's a segmented cutterhead. sure if you traced a line through the center of each mountin point it would form a helix, but i do find that calling these helical heads is dishonest

Nice job. Seriously, though. It’s a Jet. You shouldn’t have to. In my mind, a jointer without extensions is borderline useless. What up, Jet? If my DeWalt planer came without I’d be toast.

Good stuff. I want to start doing woodworking but there are so many things in life that hold me up. I am still working on my 1980 Camaro since last year that has been sitting for 19 years.
