    Mercury is the least of those guys problems. The smoke and dust from the furnaces is far more damaging; Constant inhalation of both can lead to emphysema, COPD, black lung, silicosis and eventually cancer. Heavy metal poisoning by mercury is going to cause neurological problems such as decreased IQ, motor skill impairment (tremors, uncontrolled movement, etc.) But the former problem is going to get them far quicker than the latter.

    Better than starvation. Capitalism afforded the luxury of worker safety measures. He should reinvest what he can into improving the safety of the process or getting better machinery for smelting so that he can make the work more efficient. Safety will improve naturally, but i am happy for them, they are content doing the hard work. Long life is meaningless if it is spent pointlessly

    I love all the comments about the working conditions and safety concerns etc. etc....like....haha y'all have no fucking clue how rich and privileged we are in the 1st world. Many people around the world just don't have an option for the "right equipment" to perform dangerous jobs, or have the workers rights to not let their boss treat them like shit, and YES for an entire village to work for days to get about $1000 worth of gold it is worth it to them, kid. You say "not worth it" because your perception is totally skewed and you don't understand hardship.

  • @19900niko

    @19900niko

    its not hardship its just a stupid and harmfull art of work....in the way i do not give a single fuck about my workers and not a single cent for their safety...yoiu didnt know that they in india hav a very bad ass kind of fascism?....no one givs a shit about lower castes..not evem the members of them....they just getting exploitet.....its not a luxus how we hav it here in 1st world...it should be a normal way of working in every world.

    Labor in India is dirt cheap. Sometimes as cheap as a dollar a week. They work 6-8 hours a day. No medical, no comp-offs, no insurance. Compared to that gold nugget in the end is 500 times profit. Sometimes more if the nugget is big. Too huge a population and too few jobs don't give these workers more choice. Its quite sad when you have a population of over a billion and a half.

    I am familiar with a very similar process. Unlike this, we use fume scrubbers and bag houses to control the fumes and collect the lead.I believe they are using lead instead of mercury as he said.It is the oldest methods of getting prcious metals. Still very hazardous, as there is no fume control mechanism in place.

    May be you are right. May be absolutely right. But have you thought if they have any other option? Not every country might be blessed with socio-economic status as yours. Imagine about hygiene if you are stranded in some desert? Would you find soaps and disinfectants there? Be able to wash your clothes there? Water potability? Maybe water available will be highly contaminated with arsenic and mercury?? What will you do? Try to survive or care about hygiene and health? And then imagine how you'd feel if someone says that you are living in shitty condition and so you are shit. Really????

    they are loosing a lot of the gold they have also there is a tool that will process a full bag like that in just a minute and its almost 90 percent recovery rate . it uses no power just water flowing through a cone shaped concentrator and would also remove most of those workers that's why they do not use it also as many from what I have seen are only doing it to make jobs for people .

    +Thisisbb1 I am a diamond merchant, based out of SF, blood diamonds are not that common anymore, mostly Zimbabwe....plus there is a Kimberly certificate for us in the trade to assure its origin. A lot of diamonds come from Canada, Russia, and Australia. African diamonds are obviously a good chunk of the market but not what it used to be.

    So is apple, google, Microsoft and on and on and on. Difference is they are more sophisticated with their lies and thieving. iPhone has 50 to 60% profit margin, because the Chinese are willing to work themselves to death to build them. World is built on the suffering of these men willing to slave themselves, yes most of them are men.
