As good as Jack was as the Joker, I always assumed (incorrectly) that given his star status and somehwhat prickly public persona, this role was just a paycheck to him. It is fascinating, and satisfying, to learn that I was wrong and not only was he really involved creatively with the development of the make-up, but that he also clearly was invested in getting the character from the comic books to leap from the page and not be silly. Fantastic.

@@knightofarkronia8652 Yeah but not comic silly for the film -- not Romero silly. That's not a dig at Romero, his Joker was right for the 60s TV show. Batman '89 was expressly trying to lean away from that and more toward the tone of the Dark Knight Returns graphic novel. Nicholson understood the assignment, hence the debate over hair coloring. His Joker was "real-world" silly yet fiendish, deranged.

the performer really makes the character, the best example being heath ledger's joker. if someone else played that joker, it would be absolutely nothing like heath's, almost everything memorable about him was made up by him. the lip licking thing he does was actually because the prosthetics for his scars would come loose, and he had to lick his lips a lot to keep them in place, and he decided that he could implement that into the character by emphasising that his face is scarred

What I love about Nicholson’s Joker, aside from his overall performance, is how the design is near 1:1 with the source material; in particular, he’s the only live-action Joker to have a literal permanent smile, which is just expertly realised. That’s not to criticise previous, or later, iterations but it an element of the character I really admire the team behind Batman ‘89 for incorporating… also, if anyone was going to pull it off, Jack Nicholson man (at the time) to do so.

No disrespect to Ledger or his memory, but his Joker always felt to me like as if he was an evil villain who liked putting a Joker makeup on. Jack Nicholson to me was the Joker. From his voice, the way he spoke, his facial expressions to his acting, he would have been the ultimate Joker if the makeup department was as advanced as today or maybe his makeup a little different. Same thing with Batman. I haven't seen anyone nail it as much as Michael Keaton.

  • @TheWilkReport

I always felt that Nicholson managed to take what Caesar Romero had built upon playing the Joker and using that as his template, took it to its logical extreme. He did on screen what Romero couldn't because the censors and writers of the time simply didn't allow for him to go all-out. But that in no way diminishes Nicholson's performance-he basically took ownership of the part and left a solid foundation for Mark Hamill to work with when that actor did the Batman Animated Series.

Jack Nicholson undoubtedly had the best performance and appearance, it's not even a question when one actually examines the behavioral history of the character.

I'll be watching more of these behind the scenes for the 90's Batman films. Grew up watching them but had never seen the behind the scenes footage. Thank you for uploading!
