Tired of background noise? Drape a thick blanket over yourself and the mic while recording. You will LOOK stupid, but nobody is going to _SEE_ you on a audio recording, and it is the closest thing to having a "Dead room" (no echo from walls, background noise, etc). Also make sure you are on carpet or a rug, the floor can really reflect your voice as well. Hope this helps everyone. - Kevin

Jacob Brown Yes, that will help also. Maybe not as well as shag carpet though. We need to create a world of "Surface area". A bedsheet is flat, a shag carpet has a million fibers more sticking out. That creates more surface area for the sound to get "Lost in". Similar to the blanket. But better than a hard srfaced chair, good call.

By the way, it doesn't necessarily get rid of the background noise, but it will make a huge difference on the echo

ProjectJamesify if I could suggest another tip to make your audio sound even more professional...get a microphone that’s better than the Blue Yeti! No honestly Blue Yeti are USB which are horrible, so invest in an XLR mic then you’d have tip top audio.

Position your mic lower than your chin with your mouth all the way open. It helps avoid breathing noise and pops from 'p's, 'b's, and 'd's.

i know this upload is yearssssssssssss old but you just helped me out a lot and i wanna say THANK YOU SO MUCH! Im new to music and YT and all that stuff and you just helped me learn so much more with audacity. 🙏
I am so happy you posted this man! I hope you don't mind, I'm going to record vocals for my song and post a comment with the link once I finish using your techniques. Have a great one you've just done me a service, thanks again.
In general, Bass Boosting and Treble boosting is decent, but the defaults are WAY over the top.You should never do it over 6 db generally unless something went really wrong with the recording. Doing it to 9 db like here is overkill and pretty much makes it noticeable that you're modifying your voice - it gives the slight automoton-like ring to it in the background. The other contributing component is when you treble boost that much, you get all those spikes that you have to hard-limiter. Hard-limiters distort audio quality. So if you can avoid creating huge spikes with treble boosting, you can probably avoid using the hard limiter altogether. These steps are good, I would just say play around with lesser emphasis on the bass/treble-boosting 'till it sounds better.
it distorts my voice and makes it sound really metallic

His mic is mid-range being the Blue Yeti. I use Rode NT-USB which is slightly higher quality but its mostly dependent on your environment and background noises.
Dude! Thanks so much for the tutorial! Super straightforward and simple! It helped me fix my recordings in no time at all! Keep it up!
This helped me out a lot! I make covers for songs using the UTAU program and I just could never seem how to "amplify" my voice without it sounding like it was going to blow the speakers. Thank you so much!!

It's just called limiter on my version. "hard" is a setting within it.
Thanks! I've been using Audacity for a while, but I hadn't used all of the steps in your list. Much improved, and my recording was done with a pretty low-rent condenser shotgun mike in my office with ventilation noise and ambient noise through the wall and a vent from a staff lounge next door. I'm pretty happy with the results.

***** I have the same mic but if I keep a distance away and turn up the gain the background noise overpowers the voice. I have eliminated some of it by placing the Yeti on a mouse mat, but you can still hear my computer fan, keyboard and mouse. When removing the background noise the audio seems to sound quite tinny. I do have a pop filter attached to the mic and it does remove the popping sounds effectively. The main question is, do you think my recording environment is reducing quality? I record in a small room with rough surfaced walls, maybe if I drape a blanket etc. over the opposite wall and the door then some of the horrible echos should be removed? (I don't want to invest in acoustic foam if it doesn't work for my situation)
