My travel plan is learning to find new meaning in the places I often go to. I just finished my 1 week out of 3 in my summerschool shortfilm course and had no previous experience with filming or editing. So I'm learning everything I can and i am really enjoying color grading with Davinci!

Honestly, one of the best creative videos I've watched in a LONG time. You covered gear and settings, storytelling, and I loved that you brought in experience over recording. Absolutely awesome video, you gained a sub.

@@thisiserich Yeah, I find gimbals are one of those good to haves and not must haves! even locked off static shots are so good already. 1 lens, small mic, and a couple of batteries you're good to go!

Appreciate the time and effort you put into this!

Composition, movement, and lighting are my go-to when I travel.

Be careful with auto white balance since it can cause weird color shifts between cuts or even during one shot and can cause footage to not match up right. Having it set to daylight will probably be fine for most outdoor scenes, and even for indoor scenes if you're ok with them having a warm look

Great tips. I’m not a big fan on bringing too much stuff while I’m traveling and actually ending up bringing too much gear anyway😂. I do manage to leave my gimbal at home and rely on the 5 axis in-body stabe instead. Just to keep the weight a bit down. I also try to keep the lenses as compact as possible but that can be a challenge sometimes.

Thanks Victor for such a helpful video for travel filming. I had recently taken my Sony A7iv with a 24-105 lens, GoPro Hero 11, and iPhone 12pro max on a trip to Switzerland and a tour of Patagonia and South America. I like your tip about taking some time to enjoy the moment. I am 67 years old and my wife and I are checking off bucket list destinations. We are off to Indonesia and Bali in September. I do struggle with juggling so much gear while traveling that I miss much of the experience which I seem to relive when back home on the computer in Final Cut Pro. Your tutorials have helped me a lot. I will try to enjoy Bali in September and not worry so much about always getting the shot.

I think as video enthusiasts we always have this itch to film everything!!! especially if its a beautiful location. Definitely try to keep it minimal. If you get a good shot, great! and if not, move along and enjoy the scene :) I do love reliving the moment when editing or even posting online. It becomes a visual diary! I bought the A7IV last year and the same Viltrox 16mm lense half a year ago. I was insecure about the lense but as I tested it, holy moly for that price it is really good. I was like OMG YEA BOYY as u showed in this Video wich lense you are using. Haha so my decision was pretty good buying that lense. Furthermore a great Video and an inspiration for me to film with different perspectives and wider of course. Thanks man! :) I also like traveling and always taking my camera with me for cinematic shots but the only thing I really need is a Gimbal for long steady shots like you did.

Amazing! glad to hear, the joys of travelling is back!! As for the lens, I'm in the same boat. I want to sell the my sigma 28-70 2.8 and Sony 24mm 1.4 for the sony 24-70 2.8 GMii. The only reason is to condense my lenses and get that breathing compensation! If you do have the extra funds, I suggest getting the best of the best since you're going to use it for work anyways. If not, the sigma 24-70 is about 90% of the Sony already.

Awesome video, definitely learnt lots of great tips that I can't wait to implement. Quick question for you - did you make your film burn transitions? Would love to see a tutorial on them if so!

@@VictorLaforteza By the way, I finally got my dream come true. My friend sold me his A7siii through terms. Coming from ZV-E10 and A6400. What lens do you suggest I get? I have limited budget as I know the FE lenses are extremely expensive compared to APS-C lenses. I always use the Sony 35mm and Sigma 16mm on my A6400.

Hey everyone! I´ve been trying to migrate to DaVinci, but I´ve being facing the same issue everytime. Some sort of color artifacts appear on my footage, and it literally ruins the whole thing. It shows up on almost every clip I import into DaVinci. I´ve googled a bunch of things and no one seems to know how to fix that. At the moment, I´m still stuck with Premiere, since those issues don´t show up at all over there.

Thanks a lot for all your tips! You're an incredibly talented filmmaker. I wanted to ask you something, though. Yours are some of the very few videos I've seen shot with Sony cameras (and specifically the FX30 and A7) that don't scream "DIGITAL". I don't know why people are not talking about this more, because it's very obvious to me that no matter how good the image quality is on these cameras and how many times people (over)use the word "cinematic", 90% of the videos I watch featuring the last batch of Sony hybrid and cinema cams don't look like film, at least to me. It's not that they look "cheap" by any means. As I said, the image quality, colors and sharpness are super professional looking but, for lack of a better expression, the look "too real" and don't trigger the feeling of "this is a movie" that I get with other cameras. And I'm talking about cameras because I know there's a ton of different elements that contribute in making something feel like a movie, but in this particular case, you rely a lot on natural light and "simple" techniques and it still feels different from other videos I've seen shot with the FX30 the A7 and similar where even using pro lighting, it looks more like a commercial or a corporate video, but never like an actual film. What would you say it's that key element that makes your videos look different?

Thanks! I know what you mean about that digital feel. I think a huge part of it is exposure and making sure you're softening up the highlights and shadows in post so it uses the full dynamic range! I've shown my entire workflow in terms of filming and editing and I'm not quite sure what else I'm doing different! could be the grading!

I've been debating whether to get the fx30 with a sigma 16mm 1.4, the a7iv looks great.

The sigma 16mm 1.4 is a really good lens for the FX30!! if you need a wide angle it's a must have. Another good one is the Sony 11mm 1.8!

This is something I'm actually working on! I just use the in camera audio. I feel like I'd just add them in post if things didn't work out with the built in mic but maybe a shotgun mic would be great. It just makes the camera a bit more bulky.

I usually do! an ND 16 is enough for me but if you like convenience a quality VND would work. This trip I actually forgot my ND so I had to compensate by using the lower extended ISO for SLOG3

I definitely had this issue before but letting go of the idea that you're gonna miss editing a good shot is the way to go. You can revisit your catalogue and see if there's any new ideas for editing that pop up at a later date! Awesome! excited for your tip in Singapore. Only been to their airport. What about picture profiles? Are you shooting in Slog-3 for everything or no profile at all? I'm traveling to Alaska on a cruise with my wife and I am taking my FX3 and a couple of lenses so I can be light as possible. The last thing I want to do is mess around with my settings but I am so accustomed to shooting on Cine EI that I'm timid to not use a profile at all. Already have my Base iso on a custom button and I agree with putting the aperture on Auto (I'd rather have a deep DOF for travel anyways). Curious to know your thoughts.

Slog3! Sometimes I switch to s cinetone so the base iso is lower. I didn’t bring an ND so I needed a lower ISO at f/8-f22. I tend not to shoot EI unless I’m filming with controlled lighting. Just easier with flexible ISO mode. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Great video, thank you for explaining so well! As far as the settings go, do you use SteadyShot when using gimbal? Seeing the wide shot, it doesn’t look like there’s any crap.

I usually turn it off but I also had some good shots with it accidentally left on.. so I don't really know which one is the best... lol most of the shots in this video is off though to give you a reference!

What font/style are using for the title cards? It’s so nice and I’ve been trying to find something like that for ages!

Great video man! But look: The overheating on the A7 iv is kinda like a myth to me. I'm a BMX filmmaker and I filmed the last month's under very hot temperatures for hour's. The a7 iv did not overheat a single time since I got it and I film about 80% of the time in 4k 60p 10bit... (I though try to keep the flip screen flipped out all the time so the heat can spread very nicely)

I think we got good a good batch tbh. I was shooting some scenes on a tripod and it was under the sun in Thailand and it was super HOT to touch that I had to cool it down but I didn't see the high temp sign at all. Maybe it was there for 10-15 mins but yeah... a bunch of people report that it overheats quick but some like ours are almost like tanks!

Two things: The A7IV has a low overheat threshold setting. Remove it. Tip 2. My A7IV also remains cooler if I flip out the screen out. As that is where the main heat sink is for that camera. So you are correct!

Great content - thanks for sharing! I was wondering do you ever get nervous, or get into trouble when flying a drone in foreign/busier cities? I know just in the US it can get hairy with needing a license and stuff, so I can only imagine it being just as difficult in other countries as well.

I don't bring drones anymore! It just takes too much time and getting permits is a pain for little gain.. (unless it's a professional shoot) everything drone shot was from storyblocks! but when I brought them before, I always get nervous even if I have proper permits especially with FPV.
