Honestly with so many people showing interest in this kind of setup it'd be perfect for Valve to jump right back into the Steam Machine but without the issues of multiple different brands like they had before, maybe even just partnering with a mini PC company to make one even if manufacturing it themselves is an issue.

I absolutely agree. Kinda weird that they're not doing this yet, TBH. I'm surprised that they haven't released a steam machine with Deck hardware (just without the built-in controller/screen). Maybe they're cooking something up we don't know about 🤔

@@TechDweeb We saw an odd little box next to a TV in one of their videos, so they could very well be making one. Also, we know their new VR headset, the "Deckard," will use Steam Deck-like hardware, have a VR specific version of Steam OS, and be a standalone/PCVR headset. So on top of the headset being compatible with most PCs, chances are we could see a new Steam Machine purpose built as a console replacement that just so happens to also interface with the headset.

Kye-meera. :-P Great video. I'm personally holding out until the official SteamOS release for PC, which I think Valve are probably trying to get as tight as possible for mass adoption. I'm pretty sure the Deck was just the opening move of the plan, with SteamOS for PC being the real intention for the software. I think the Shenzhen mini-PC makers are waiting for the official release too, but it will open the floodgates. As a Linux user of 23 years, I can't believe our OS is starting to be seen as the easy option. Shedding a wee tear. 🙂

The return of the Steam Machine! When they first came out, they just were not ready getting Windows games natively running on Linux. Steam really should have just kept the hardware production to themselves because you had major PC companies producing Steam Machines that the average non-PC gamer saw as consoles but sold for up to $1,000 plus. Reminds me back in the day of seeing a NeoGeo on the shelf for $600 and if you wanted two player, the separate arcade controller was right next to it for $150. In the day of $100-$200 main stream consoles, $600 was insane. Not a lot today but imagine young gamers making the minimum wage of around $4-$5 an hour.

This is the main thing I think a lot of handheld PC companies are not realizing, that the software is as or maybe more important than the hardware. Valve knows the value of convenience and ease and having the SteamOS instead of trying to use windows on a screen size it was not intended for, it makes all the difference.

@@sw1tchpoint I don't think now is the time. With them focusing on developing their own DE it is kind of old at this point, since it's not getting the regular updates it would otherwise. The good thing about the popOs was that they provide an iso with the Nvidia drivers preinstalled, and I think lutris was also preinstalled. But that is basically it. A lot of distros offer easy way to install the Nvidia drivers and lutris is not hard to install either. when we add that the OS is kind of old at this point I just think it's not a good idea to be featured. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of it as well (although I still prefer mint over it) but now is just not the time. Once the cosmic desktop releases, assuming they keep the quality they have provided in the past, it would once again be a great distro, deserving to be spotlighted to new people.

I think AMD is usually recomended for linux distros because there's proper open source drivers for them. NVIDIA performance is never fully guaranteed because you either have to use the proprietary drivers (that is clearly not nvidias focus compared to windows) or the reverse engineered (? - or something of that ilk) drivers, that once again are not likely to be as performant as fully open sourced drivers that are improved upon by the OG engineers and the community as a whole.

First of all, great video. The one thing I don't like is the requirement to download the image from the installer, instead of having it already downloaded to install offline. Spidey senses are tingling and all that. I don't use SteamOS as I don't like the requirement of my OS to use an online account. Also because I trust SteamOS/Valve even less than Microsoft on system backwards compatibility. Every few years they easily stop allowing installing the steam client on older OSes, even if you have a ton of games which might even require those OSes to run properly. What I do like about steamOS is that by them having some success, Linux gets more attention by game developers, so having something like Ubuntu might be a good solution one day if you are a "Windows gamer". Also I stopped buying games from Steam, for the most part, and only buy games from GOG for all the drm-free and offline installers goodness. Happy Sunday!

Also I'm not sure if xnone is included with Chimera, some xbox controller dongles might not work without it.

I believe Nvidia support is only for the desktop version though, the handheld/console version still requires AMD. It's because of Gamescope, Nvidia just doesn't work on it yet, or it's still very early/buggy, but it's being worked on. Nvidia only recently even started working on Wayland, which Gamescope is a Wayland compositor, so it'll get there eventually. Side note: there's also NobaraOS, built off of Fedora by GloriousEggroll (the guy that does all the GE forks for Proton and Wine, he's also a Red Hat engineer) and somewhat recently there's been a "Steam Deck" version which also makes it console-like for handhelds and otherwise. I haven't been able to determine yet if this version works with Nvidia, though. The desktop version definitely does.

for me steam machines = tv, living room. that was their original purpose (valve marketed it heavily back then with BP mode) so... good idea but lacks some "living room" in the vid mate

This is really cool - would be great for me to plop at the TV instead of docking my Deck. I do wonder - would EmuDeck work on this? It would be awesome if it did, to easily get that working for my kids who love retro gaming.

Can Chimera OS stream from a network PC that has Steam on Windows? I recently grabbed a Beelink SER5 Max on a flash sale. Currently on Win11 with a second 1TB SSD and 32GB of DDR4. It's a little beast.

I have no idea. As far as I know most games are running through a proton compatibility layer, so in theory the same stuff you'd do on Windows would work here, but I can't say for sure because I've never tried.

  • @TechDweeb

No windows annoyances to deal with is one of the main reasons. And the fact that everything is all integrated together so it is designed to work purely with a controller on every level of the operating system. Steam big picture mode is fine on Windows but on a Windows machine you will always need to have a keyboard in mouse plugged in. This is designed to work purely with a controller. So it's way more convenient for a handheld or for a console that stays plugged into a TV.

We hook up our Steam Deck to the TV from time to time, but I have been looking for a more permanent solution. I will certainly be missing the form factor of a mini-PC, but I might do a dual boot on my gaming laptop. Since the release of the Steam Deck, my laptop just doesn't get the usage and due to the age, selling it isn't much of an option. On to more important questions, what do you argue with your cat about? I have an ongoing argument with our younger cat about why I am such a jerk and don't allow him to knock over everything on my desk.

Hermione is always giving me a hard time about my life choices. Judging me for not being more successful, reminding me that I'm a failure, that I'm not handsome enough, that my muscles are too small... It's hard living with someone who knows my innermost insecurities and constantly berates me for them. Oh and yes, before you ask, she is definitely real and alive.

EmuDeck is also a yes. Plugins though, not sure what you mean exactly, but if you're talking about Decky Loader and it's plugins... maybe, but probably not? Not 100% sure, but on their wiki there's a FAQ "Does Decky Loader work on Windows, Mac, or other operating systems?" "No, Decky Loader is only intended for use with the installation of SteamOS provided on Steam Deck." and the more relevant part: "HoloISO and other SteamOS third-party distributions are not officially supported and may not work with Decky Loader. We have no plans to support other operating systems."
