David, I really like the direction you moved to with your channel! Your personality, style, and creativity are much more unrestrained, and you're free to be your best self now that you have someone to help you so you don't have to spend so much effort on the filming directly! Keep them coming!
Probably the coolest project I've seen all year! We love puzzles and never thought of making our own. Definitely going to the "make" list ;-)
love your channel, that is why I keep coming back for more, keep sharing!
Nice Stranger Things music :) Just finished the series last night. Awesome project man, super creative.
I like the "story" feel of this video and the project came out great as usual. Thanks David.
Great project! Thank you for introducing me to HDR photos, never heard of that name before but I always thought that those photos look amazing.
Super cool and what a great picture!
Man, this might be my most favorite video you've ever done. I loved this project!!!

Right on! Thanks Mike!
Love the video David, im really enjoying the new style of commentating while working rather than voice over, it give a more personal and polished feel. Love your work.
This was pretty awesome, David! Good job!
Cool project and awesome photograph! Lasers looks super fun and can really open up the creative possibilities. Also, love the new format of videos!
There was just a discussion over on the woodtalk forums on how woodworkers are more willing to share their knowledge and how photography forums are all about gear instead of being better at photography. Cool that you mixed in a little talking about how you made the photograph better.
your creativity is just gold David. and that photo!

Nice project David, I love the dynamics of the video too.
Great job on the HDR processing . . . huge fan of HDR!! Another terrific video!
When in doubt, sound it out. Loving the new style, buddy. Great video!
step 1: buy a $2000 dollar laser engraver

Yea, as a photographer myself, it begs the question: How many of these puzzles would I have to sell, and at what price, in order to break event on the engraver? It can probably be done in a matter of time.
Watched your video on the notebooks you did on the laser and that prompted me to find a local MakerSpace. FOUND ONE! This is a great project. Curious how long the puzzle took to cut out on the laser. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
That is Awesome. From start to finish.
Awesome work! Now to win the lottery so I can buy a laser...
So Cool David! Very Creative:)
Awesome David. Great picture too!
wow, diverse skills in one vid! Like it a lot! Also thumbs up for mentioning Inkscape, I use it all the time for patterns and it works on whatever I use (Ubuntu or Mac, even Windows)
amazing I wish I had such equipment, this must be hugely satisfying to make own puzzles like that ❤ ❤ ❤
i have a question i don't have 3000 dollars to spend on a laser cutter 😅what would be your best alternative?

You can get precut blank jigsaw puzzles from various places. I get them through bulk t-shirt blank suppliers, but you can find them on Amazon, too. Attach the photo the same way, then recut by hand using a jeweler's saw (these are not very expensive).

Awesome job!
This is the best!!!! I'm 100000000% defiantly going to try this!
So Freakin' CoOL! That's why you're channel is so addictive! 2 Thumbs way up!
Love this project! That pic is great! An alternative for those of us that don't have the laser is a scroll saw! I also like the box you made with the 1/4" ply. Very simple and nice. Is that the HD "sande" plywood?
That is a gorgeous photo, the contracting made it look almost surreal, it was just beautiful

That's one bad ass photo David. The rule of thirds really lives in that shot. Nice project also. Like the box top. JimE
Great vid and project

I've made puzzles for the last 3 years on a scroll saw. clearly it takes a lot of time and patience to ensure a proper fit. the majority of the wood projects you have done are within the scope of the tools I have. I don't own a $5K laser cutter so I guess I am stuck with an old method. note of advice....if using a scroll saw, you should make 2 puzzles at once with the pictures facing each other on the inside of the cut to minimize tear out. works 75% of the time due to blade and speed issues.
I would like to see more laser projects, this one is a great idea.
awesome!!
HDR is easy to overdo, you struck a great balance and made the photo hyperreal and not overdone. Wonderful restraint! This is a great video.
@MakeSomething
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You are right about it being easy to overdo. I actually made this HDR photo about 5 years ago and when I look at it now I think I did slightly overdo it. But more than anything, when I look at the photo I remember walking down that road. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the reply, David! I used to cringe a little when I looked at my early HDR photos, but now I think of HDR as documenting the memory of a scene and not the reality of it.
Very nice David, I love the project! You probably already experimented with this and I have limited laser experience, but what if you cut the pieces from the back side of the puzzle? Would that limit the amount of burning on the front?
Very cool idea, I will try this if I ever get a laser cutter!
Really cool project! I like how the end card looked...that was neat with the project in the background.
Nice video, think this is my favourite project yet

Hey man awesome project where did you get that drop down stop on your sled?
Use a hand held hair dryer on low setting to loosen the adhesive on the tape.
video was great david. felt like i was watching tv
I'm glad you use inkscape for you project.
Awesome project and video dude! I am studying photography at the moment, using different film cameras and double exposing scenes of nature. I love what you did with your photo! What Stanley knife/scalpel did you did you use?

Thanks!!! I'm using this knife: ergokiwi.com/
is that any alternative way bout the laser cutter?
Nice Job! Many Public Library's are now creating Fab-Lab's with laser engravers. If your Library doesn't have one you could spearhead a mission to purchase one.
Very cool. I have tried this before without tape and had lots of scorch marks. Tape is a good idea.
When folding cardboard, lightly score the inside bend with a razor. It makes it super easy to bend and it looks good with a share corner.
This is a good project, and I hate to be critical because I'm really a big fan, but it looked like all the pieces were comprised of only a few different shapes so it could be put together in many different ways...which could actually be quite fun if you used the right image. Now to go check out that laser cutter!
Very cool project.

Thanks!
That came out pretty good 🤓
Curious if you tried flipping the piece over (photo side down) to avoid the hassle with the painters tape?
cool project, would be great for the kids too.
what is the exact thickness for the card stock? and what is the type of paper you used to print ? was it half glossed ? Photo Paper? Matt?
@giulioballabio

I want to known these information too 🤗👍
I was watching your videos and was wondering if you made that exacto handle or if you bought it.
Optionally you could get an acid free backing from the frame shop. A roller called a brayer would be good for the gluing
Nice to see tape trick in action on the other continent. What brand of tape did you use?
awesome work! Do you work with metals also? If yes, can you make a wire stripper mashine? :)
I love this.... So much .... i will keep in touch with you sir. Thank you...
Nice
Great project, great picture, still not feeling the love for the moving/wobbly camera style

Great work! Could you have used thin wood as the puzzle pieces instead? Would the laser cut through something like that?
@MakeSomething
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, the laser will up up to 1/4". I actually though about using wood but decided to use cardboard.
I haven't explored the HDR functions of Lightroom yet. You have a tutorial video you can recommend?
@MakeSomething
8 жыл бұрын
I've never done it in Lightroom. I actually made this HDR in Photoshop about 5 or 6 years ago.
What was the cost of the materials to do this? How much time did it take?
100% badass
Great video and great idea. Laser cutter a bit expensive for casual occasional use. Are there any services that would do the cutting? My grandids would love this! How would I find them?
@MakeSomething
8 жыл бұрын
Some libraries have laser cutters and many large cities have maker spaces with laser cutters. I haven't looked but there might even be a custom puzzle service.
How much do you think a puzzle that size would be able to be sold for?
Does your wife work the video camera? It's feel really cool with the all the movements. I definitely enjoyed this video!!

RigginVeggies Thanks! It's an investment that I'm sure will pay off! Thank you for watching!
This is real neat! Did you try just putting the photo upside down in the laser cutter instead of putting tape on the photo side? It seems like taking the tape off each piece is a little tedious. I like your new style of videos with the camera person.

Thanks! I'm having tons of fun! The laser burns both sides.

aah, so even if it was photo side down, you'd still want to protect the photo side with tape? (I've never used a laser cutter).

Well... there goes my last kidney.
I’m looking for a SVG for for puzzles with at least 350 pieces. Don’t seem to be able to find anything. Any suggestions as to where I can look?
good day A very good skill here . Where can o ne get trained and how much is the tuition?
What kind of laser cutter did you use where did you buy it
Neat
To bad I don't have the equipment to make one :/
Alas, I can't afford a "laser beam", have to settle for mutated sea bass...

Can I buy that photograph or is there a way I can get it digitally?
Great stuff David!! Don't know what's is sexier - puzzle or box. Lol. Both sexy!
can you send us the PDF for the jigsaw template please ?
Love the puzzle! If you do another, stick the masking tape to your clothing a couple of times. It will make it easier to remove when you're done.
