I used a 2 inch diamond drill bit (for glass) to drill out a larger hole in the top pot. This allows for a water bottle to be placed upside down in the hole (I use those long neck Schweppes bottles). I can now see at a glance when the olla and bottle need refilling. I have others that have grommets in them so they can be strung together from a single water source.

why wouldn't you just buy terra cotta stakes if you are going to use bottles?

Thanks Jolene, make sure to use unglazed pots. I will be doing this type of watering in my next garden.

So cool! I’d seen this done a while back, but seeing it anew has my mind working to think of how I can apply the concept to my current garden setup (mostly large terracotta pots on our deck). My current vision is to seal the bottom of a very large terracotta pot -edge to edge- with silicone and to place an inverted medium large terracotta pot at the bottom.. then maybe feed a tube into the hole of that inverted pot and seal it up with some putty or silicone….. then back fill the pot with soil and plant above the olla.. filling the reservoir through the tube as needed. :)

Do you think you can decorate the saucer only i.e., mosaic, colored stones, painted designs, etc?

FYI FOR EVERYONE HERE, OLLAS IS THE WORD IN SPANISH FOR POTS! OYOS IS THE WORD IN SPANISH FOR HOLES! SO NO, YOU ARE NOT MAKING OLLAS BECAUSE THE POT ARE ALREADY MADE, YOU ARE PUTTING POTS TOGETHER TO MAKE A DEVICE THAT WILL HOLD WATER FOR A SLOW IRRIGATION. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CREATIVITY, VERY NICE, BUT THE GLUE MAY LEACH OUT IN TO THE SOIL
