    Hi Sue! Love and appreciate your many how to videos! Your videos have answered so many of my questions!! I've been embroidering a couple years now and just created my first patches, question, I've purchased cotton twill as my base, should I wash that fabric first before embroidering it? Do I need to worry about it shrinking or the colors bleeding or fading? Thank You!

  • @ServeLearnTeach

    @ServeLearnTeach

    Bill Morris I see your question was not answered. I always always prewash fabrics, then press before using. It’s best to not use fabric softener, because for some projects the residue can affect performance of the final project, i.e. adhesives, or allergies of wearer.

    Hey Sue! Just watched your video on applique. Question: Do you think cutting fabric by hand does as good a job as those expensive ScanNCut machines? If you use a scan and cut machine, what brand/model do you recommend? Thanks so much for all your videos. Very helpful!!

  • @OMLembroidery

    @OMLembroidery

    5 жыл бұрын

    I don't have a scan and cut but I do have a Cricut Maker and the Silhouette 3. I don't use them often for applique, only if I am doing a ton of one thing. It's 6 of one, 1/2 of another really. If you pre-cut everything, then you spend time setting it up, cutting and cleaning mats, and then more time setting it down within the lines. If you cut at the machine, then it takes a few minutes to trim, but you know that your fabric is properly in the lines. It all depends on what you prefer - people love one way or another so the opinion varies.

    Ok I need some serious help here lol. Some backstory: I sort of taught myself how to machine embroider patches. One day I bought a machine and just started. I did some research, like what materials to use, but not so much about the process. Flash forward a year and I sell 50-60 patches online. Anyways, I recently had a “come to Jesus” moment and noticed my patches look a little different from other patches for sale online and it’s got me nervous. So I hoop both fabric and stabilizer and just stitch the design and trim the fabric and stabilizer after. It leaves a thin edge of fabric to which I take my seam ripper and pull the remaining fabric outwards and trim the frays. All my patches have satin borders with a thin edge of fabric. Now all the patches I’ve seen online don’t have fabric outside of the satin borders and generally look much cleaner than mine. Is the way I do it accepted (like an alternative process)? Or is it frowned upon and I need to relearn how to make patches the right way? I can’t seem (oh man I really wanted to do a pun there) to find the answer online. Thanks!
