MAKE YOUR OWN GUITAR HEADSTOCK LOGO AND GET A FACTORY FINISH! BRIAN MAY TELECASTER REPLICA
Here's a tutuorial on how to make and apply your own guitar headstock logo - and get a factory finish. I'm left handed and wanted a black Fender Telecaster with a rosewood fretboard and a 70's era logo on the headstock. Fender don't make such a guitar so I had to create my own!

This was just the information I needed in order to make myself a new logo for my carvin guitar. Great job
Fantastic job! This is just the tutorial I needed, thank you.

Thanks, there are quite a few videos on KZread but some don't go all the way to getting a factory finish!
I've always messed this up. The secret is the coats of lacquer you put on the decal itself before you apply it. Brilliant! Nice job!

Is it just matt lacquer that youvapply to the decal before putting it on?
cant wait to try this, great video!!!!!!!
Very nice. I'm replacing the lined fretless neck on my Fender Jazz Bass (22 year old Mexican) with a Warmoth unlined fretless and this is excellent guidance on keeping that "Fender look". Much appreciated, brother. I don't do this kind of thing all that often, but I'm subscribed now anyway to support your channel. Thanks.

Thank you so much. I've only done it twice but the results are excellent and you would not know it didn't leave the factory like it! Good luck with yours
Wonderful technique. Thanks for making this video. One thing of note; polyurethane and lacquer are not the same thing. They are mutually exclusive.

poly will yellow over time....lacquer will eventually crack...with poly you do get layers but lacquer you just get an increase in the thickness of the layer as it melts into the previous layer...if you over do it you might get a wrinkled effect so keep it thin
thanks! didn't know about the decal paper.
Excellent tutorial, very clearly demonstrated and described, thank you!
Excellent presentation. Very Interesting. I'm doing a S-style spare parts build and have been curious about how others were doing the head marking decals. To be clear, while I am using a few Fender brand parts, I am not using "Fender" Logo or brand references. This is an observation, not a criticism. After your first wet sanding, I would have dried the head and applied additional coats of matte clear, then continued the wet sanding process. Of course, that would lengthen the build process by perhaps a few days for allowing additional clear coat drying time before final wet sanding and top coating. Obviously, you were careful enough in workmanship not to need my observations. Thanks
Great job and great idea!!!
Great job mate. Excellent video. I wish we lived closer and you could help me redo my 1969 Fender Srat. The writing and headstock got damaged when I was at a charity function and a woman left her 4 year old in a van that was still running. The boy got out of his seat and put the van in drive and drove into our stage, damaging my Strat and a bass but no one was injured luckily. It just scraped my headstock, but I think I could do what you explained in your video. Thanks again mate! Cheers! 🎸🎶❤️🎸😎

Nice job sir!
very nice..im doing this on a fender bass.
Amazing job brother!!!!👏👏👏👏
Thanks man!
Flawless! Nice work.
Nicely done, John. Great tutorial. 👍
Looks great! Congrats on the lovely guitar
Im sure youve figured out by now, but you may have intonation issues. I replaced the 21 fret neck on a bass with a 22 fret after it got snapped and it won't intonate correctly now. Still got it close enough to be playable, but had to crank it all the way to get it how it is.
Great tutorial....top man 👍 nice guitar mate...she's a beaut !
Doing this tomorrow. Thanks video will really help .
Looks great and some nice finish tips as well
Great job!!
Nice one mate. I'm going to do the same on my Squier Telecaster mod project.
Really useful and informative video. Your work turned out tops. Has anyone ever told you that you sound very much like the computer guy off Red Dwarf? 10/10
That would be _CBS Era Fender_ if you’re interested in how you’d categorize that headstock logo…
Outstanding!!

Sir, have you tried any other transfer methods? I have now done it wit reverse printing on my printer and using acetone to finish the job. Cheaper too.

Is it important to use matt lacquer first before sanding ,then to use the glossy one after? Or can I just use glossy lacquer before and after sanding? Thank you!!

Hi, Sorry, only just seen this comment. No, gloss or matt - it doesn't matter all I'd say is don't mix lacquers - ie don't use acrylic and then cellulose or vice versa. I'm not sure how they'd react with each other.

@@jpsprojectroom1994 There fine , have used Halfords Clear acrylic and Dartford nitro cellulose together many times. Polyurethane another matter altogether.
Nice work 👏 I can't get the clear area of the waterslide disappear into the background after the final clear coats, can it be due to an unsmooth surface of the piece?
I use a small sanding block so I have a flat surface.
Great video thank you. How long did you wait from placing Decal to spraying lacquer?
Top!
Absolutely brilliant!!! Thank you!!
Tell us again about the software you used to create the “Fender” like logo?

I'd like to know too. I didn't hear how that happened either. Thanks.
What's the song used at beginning of the video?
My neck and headstock is already heavy gloss. Will it mess it up trying to gloss over it? Will it look mismatch?
It may be wise to use Microscale micro set for the job.

We lefties get forgotten about!😁
you can skip some steps by using a laser printer and water slide decal paper particularly for laser printers.
I'm attempting to do my first project. I've got a bare headstock on a old white strat. I want to pop a Fender logo on the neck. What are your thoughts. Shall I sand down the headstock first? Then put a coat of lacquer on before applying decal? I need help. 🤣
If you have a lazar printer you can skip lacquering the decal.
Was there any lacquer on the headstock prior to you applying the decal? If there is any should I sand it or add some grit to so the new lacquer stays? Also how much time did you leave between coats before you started sanding?
@jtothepmusic
Жыл бұрын
I really can't remember! I think it had a coat of satin or matt lacquer to seal the wood. I left enough time to make sure the lacquer had fully dried - nothing worse than sanding into slightly tacky lacquer. You then have to start from scratch!
surely the intonation would be out due to having that extra fret, similar to a different scale length?
You said you used a matt coating at the end?

Yes. You have to sand some, but not all, lacquer down to get this on, and you have to lacquer over it to secure it. You will need to refinish the whole headstock/neck if you want it to match
Awesome good video Just 2 question, i see you use matt lacquer at the beginning, can i go all the way with gloss from start to end? Also if i have sand the headstock and stain it, i should put some lacquer first right? (I’m guessing the headstock before putting the lacquer is already somehow finished or a layer of lacquer)
@jtothepmusic

Hi, you can go all the way with gloss lacquer. If you want to stain the wood do it before you do anything else! I would have thought you would want to sand the headstock down to the bare wood before applying any stain. I'd probably make sure that is fully dry then seal it with a coat of lacquer before applying the decal and carrying on. Thanks for watching
Hello there- thanks for this very useful video. Did you put any coating on the headstock before you put the decal on? Also when sanding do i dry sand or wet sand? If wet, what with? Thanks mate
@jtothepmusic

Hi, the headstock on the neck I purchased was already coated so I just lightly sanded it to 'key' it up a bit but it literally was a very light sand - I don't think it would make too much difference if you didn't do it. The we sanding was just done with water. My main advice is just have patience. Thanks for watching

Judith - Shoot whatever the headstock base is (bare wood, acrylic, enamel, lacquer, etc.) with several coats of LACQUER first. Also, at least 2 coats on the freshly printed decal. Then, (as I do) successively apply at least 8 to 10 coats of gloss lacquer with wet sanding in between each coat. Mix a bit of dish soap in the water and don't go any coarser grit than 800, then finish up with 2000, 6000, 8000, and finally brown paper bag rubout, then auto rubbing/cutting/blending compounds. I've been a pro luthier for over 5 decades and never a complaint. WARNING, though...A buddy of mine got thrown in prison and all of his "counterfeit" guitars were destroyed. Fender and all the rest WILL press charges if You duplicate their stuff and pretend it's genuine. There are a billion other ways to tell, though, so no matter how good Your decal jobs are, it's not worth it. Change the wording or use other names, etc. Peace and love, -Smythie

Awesome! Now more people know how to spread counterfeit guitars around the market. 👎
So it is the same counterfeiting money. And counterfeiting guitars if I didn’t know any better, I would say that this is illegal. You might find yourself getting into trouble over this. I don’t think fenders. Gonna appreciate that very much unless you have permission hope you do. Otherwise somebody will report you, but it won’t be me. Have a great day. It’s a great idea but I don’t think it’s illegal.👍🏼🎸😎😁
