Make Your Own Gelli Printing Texture Plates
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is a great idea for making your own texture plates for Gelli Prints. Easy to do and you can reuse them again and again.
While exploring things to use on a gelli plate to create texture I came up with this idea. I'm using molding paste and a stencil to create a texture plate to use as you would a stamp.

This is a fascinating process! I appreciate that you showed how sometimes the first effort may not be what you were hoping for, but by pushing on and being creative, it works out beautifully in the end.

Nice! I love your stencil technique! Perhaps put your canvas stencil face up and turn over your gel plate to press and conform to the stencil more easily!

Great idea! Next time I’m going to use something that doesn’t warp.
What I enjoy the most about this particular form of art is that often the finished piece is a total surprise . As well the " fails" . Useful tutorial , thank you for sharing . Your video have been suggested to me by You Tube , i have now subscribed and turned the notifications on . And i love , love , love the idea of creating those stamps out of modeling paste . I would give it a try for sure . I am contemplating to buy a ScaNcut Brother but at over £500 plus another £200 for extra bundle of knives etc , for now I would limit my stencils stash at what i can find online or hand cutting using acetate sheets , process that can be fun but tiring for eyes and hands . Loved that grungy looking paper , i would stencil on bold off white numbers and letters with a hint of bronze maybe and some 3D details and go from there .

That sounds interesting. Thanks for subscribing. I look forward to you comments. Please share your progress with me. 😀
Hello. I started watching out of curiosity, stayed till the end,and subscribed. I liked the pull that you weren't so happy with, it reminded me of a Liberty print of an old garden that I saw, many years ago, and it's a happy memory, so thank you for that, albeit accidental, result. The final print is beautiful, and would make a lovely design for a cotton summer dress, not that I could create something like that 😢 I never thought of using acetate to make stencils! Such a simple idea, and something that I could do! I have old dies, bought before mixed sets of dies, stamps and stencils were a thing, and I think some of them could be successful as stencils. I have acetate sheets, sitting in the drawer and doing nothing except gather dust, so nothing to lose by trying 😅 You have a lovely, gentle voice, which made watching the video very restful. Thank you.

Fantastic ideas Susan. I’m really enjoying your content. I’ve always done watercolor but now I’m entering the rabbit hole of prints and collage, it’s very satisfying to just be free and create something beautiful. Thank you so much for all you do.

Made some today with little bamboo cutting boards i found at the dollar store. I glued pill bottle lids, some chip board octipie and stars to one, and some birds to another. They are freaking AMAZING!!! I also made my own gelli plates with jello and hand sanitizer 😂. Ithink i broke all the rules😮

I love this and those colours, too. I’d not know if it will work for you but I use a little rounded plastic palette knife to catch the paint as it comes out of the tube and then transfer it to the gelli plate. Basically, I put the paint onto the knife first. Ive managed to stop squirting out too much paint by doing this.

Thank you for this awesome video! I think the reason your texture plate prints weren't as defined as the first one is maybe because after the first impression the plate was then loaded with paint so it didn't pull as much off the plate. Try offloading the paint by pressing it onto a paper towel each time you do an impression.

Hi from the UK Susan ! I have just purchased a gelli plate and am blown away by all the different techniques. I would be interested to know the kind of paper you used in this process ? It seems both strong and thin. Thanks for sharing your techniques !
@SusanCliftonArtist
Жыл бұрын
I use two kinds of paper mostly, Rice paper and copy paper from the office supply. I buy the bright white variety.
starting to watch this, I was thinking you could also but the medium on the board first on the thick side if you want the stencil raised more, then "press" in your stencil flat from the top and it might be even more raised... just a thought.. thanks for the idea, LovE it!
@SusanCliftonArtist

I’m not sure that will work. Because the paste is sticky and will form peaks when you lift it. But worth a try.
To prevent the boards to warp, you could maybe glue (real glue) a "pull-paper" on the backside of the board like they do in bookbinding. 🙂

@@63artemisia63 I'm not sure. That was Monique's suggestion. I don't do bookbinding. Next time I'm going to use a different type of board. Maybe a small wood block or wood art panel.

You could also paint a wide 'X' on the back of your board, going from corner to opposite corner, in gesso. As it dries, the tension created keeps your plate flat.
@shirleyb2896

I’ve found that brushing gel medium onto the back of the canvas board and letting it dry helps to flatten it out. When I mentioned this to a fine art painter I was told that the board warps in the first place because the canvas side is sealed but the back is not, therefore absorbs moisture from the air, causing the warping.
My first time on your site and loved it. One question I have is what type of paper you used? I couldn't find any detail on your 'show more' list. Thank you for sharing.

That was copy paper. I use plain copy paper from office depot most of the time. But I also use Rice paper: Art Advantage Rice Paper 9" x 12" - 100 Sheets - Rice Paper Sheets amzn.to/3mgru8L

I wonder if drywall spackle would work as well?
@SusanCliftonArtist
Жыл бұрын
I think drywall spackle would be to chalky. but maybe if you put gel medium over it to seal it, that might work.
At 13:59 You didn’t get a good impression the second time you stamped is because you didn’t “clean” your texture plate. I just stamp it onto another piece of paper until I don’t see paint anymore. You can also wipe it off with a dry paper towel.

@@63artemisia63 I will. I use fluid acrylics mostly and they dry so fast that I always assume it's already dry. And sometimes when you're in the thick of it and moving fast you don't think before you do. Especially shooting video at the same time. LOL
So is it molding paste as it says on the jar, or modelling paste as you say? And what is the difference?
@SusanCliftonArtist

They are the same. It depends on the brand. Golden calls it molding paste and Liquitex calls it modeling paste. I used Liquitex for many years so I continue to call it that. I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks. LOL.
